Cyber thugs impersonate Greenko MD, trick staff into transferring ₹2.7 cr

Hyderabad: In a high-stakes case of corporate impersonation, cyber criminals duped senior executives of Greenko Group into transferring ₹2.7 crore by posing as the company's managing director. The fraud was executed over WhatsApp using the MD's photo and convincing language, leading to two separate fund transfers in June first week before the deception was discovered. Cyberabad cyber crime police have launched an investigation based on a formal complaint from the company. The fraudsters contacted Greenko Group's chief finance officer (CFO), Subrat Das, via WhatsApp using two different mobile numbers. To lend credibility, they used a photograph of MD Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty as the display picture. On June 2, one of the imposters requested an urgent payment of ₹1.95 crore, citing client obligations. Following standard protocol, the CFO relayed the request to chief finance controller Virendra Kasliwal, who instructed senior general manager Sripada Chandra Sekhar to process the transfer. The funds were sent to an account under the name ONITSUKA Developers Pvt Ltd. A similar ploy was executed on June 5, resulting in another transfer of ₹75 lakh to Classic Constructions. The fraud came to light later that day when Chandra Sekhar shared the payment details with the MD's office and it was confirmed that no such request had been made by the real MD. "The actual MD confirmed that the mobile numbers used (956*33** and 752*512**) were not his," a cyber crimes police official said. Based on a complaint from Chandra Sekhar, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating, impersonation, forgery, and conspiracy, along with section 66-D of the IT Act. The Greenko Group has assured full cooperation with the authorities in tracking down the culprits. Fraud at children's hosp foiled In a similar incident, fraudsters impersonated Dr Ramesh Kancharla, chairman of Rainbow Children's Medicare Limited (RCML), attempting to defraud the company of ₹20 lakh. Alerted by the unusual 'tone and tenor' of the messages, RCML's CFO contacted the chairman directly, confirming the scam. No funds were transferred, and a complaint was filed at Banjara Hills police station.

Centre sanctions ₹363.23 crore to improve drinking water supply in Guntur

In a major boost to Guntur's urban water infrastructure, the Central government has sanctioned ₹363.23 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0) scheme to improve drinking water supply, especially to three critically affected areas of the city. Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar told The Hindu on Monday that of the total funds, ₹331.10 crore will be utilised for the development of a dedicated pipeline to the Gorantla area, while ₹32.13 crore has been earmarked to supply water to layouts situated downstream of the Amrut water point. An additional ₹258 crore is expected to be sanctioned soon for newly-merged villages under the city corporation limits. Highlighting the urgent need for this intervention, Mr. Chandra Sekhar noted that the estimated population of Guntur is projected to grow from 10.65 lakh in 2020 to 14.81 lakh by 2041, and further to 24.5 lakh by 2056. To meet this demand, water treatment capacity needs to expand significantly. While the current treatment capacity stands at 157 million litres per day (MLD), the city already faces a demand of 169 MLD. By 2056, the city will require an additional 138 MLD. Under the AMRUT 2.0 initiative, water will be sourced from the Krishna river and directly supplied to the Gorantla area through a new pipeline. The plan includes a dual pumping mechanism — one at the river intake and another at Gorantla — to ensure efficient delivery. The Minister credited this long-term solution to the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. 'This project is designed not just for the present but to ensure that future generations never face a water crisis in Guntur,' he stated. He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Housing P. Narayana, IT Minister Nara Lokesh, and Jana Sena Party (JSP) chief K. Pawan Kalyan for their support in realising this critical project. The pipeline works are expected to take two years to complete. The implementing agency has also been entrusted with a 10-year operations and maintenance contract to ensure sustainability.

Accurate digitized land records help resolve issues, says Union Minister

Comprehensive land surveys and digitization of land records play a crucial role in resolving long-pending disputes and strengthening economic security, Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said during a national workshop held here on Thursday. The two-day workshop organized by the Ministry of Rural Development focused on land resurvey and digitization efforts across the country under the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme (DILRMP). Andhra Pradesh Revenue, Registrations & Stamps Minister Anagani Satya Prasad participated alongside Dr. Chandra Sekhar as chief guest. Dr. Chandra Sekhar pointed out that Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and a few other States are progressing at a commendable pace in implementing the land resurvey program. However, to bring uniformity in progress across the nation, the central government organized this workshop, inviting officials from Union Territories and other States to review and accelerate the work. 'Land in our country is more than property — it holds emotional, cultural, and financial significance. Yet, disputes over land often drag on for decades in courts, causing immense hardship to landowners,' Dr. Chandra Sekhar observed. Recalling his personal experience in the United States, the Union Minister said he was surprised when a property registration was completed within just 15 minutes at his home there. He highlighted the need for India to adopt similar efficiency by using available technology. 'This is the first land resurvey in over a hundred years, and it must be done with utmost care. We are addressing issues like staff shortages and funding constraints, and have instructed officials to complete the survey within the stipulated time using advanced technology,' he added. Dr. Chandra Sekhar underlined that accurate and updated land records will particularly benefit small and marginal farmers, women, and SC/ST communities. He also lauded the development of Amaravati, describing it as a model capital city in the making. In urban areas, he stressed the importance of ensuring smooth digitization of land records to enhance transparency and accessibility. Prominent attendees included Prathipadu MLA B. Ramanjaneyulu, Special Chief Secretary and Chief Commissioner of Land Administration G. Jayalakshmi, Department of Land Resources (DoLR) Secretary Manoj Joshi, and DoLR Director D.N. Joshi.
