Police make arrests after 'pink lady' protesters march to Britannia migrant hote
Anti-migrant protesters clashed with police outside the Britannia International hotel housing refugees in London. Police made six arrests for breaching Section 14 Public Order conditions, possession of Class B drugs, and assaulting an emergency worker. Demonstrators are shown holding placards reading 'stop the boats', waving St George's flags and letting off flares. One group of protesters unfurled a large banner with the message: 'We are NOT far right but we're not far wrong. Don't gamble with our lives.' 'Pink lady' demonstrators, a group of local mums, were seen arguing with officers outside the 4-star hotel on the Isle of Dogs in Canary Wharf. One woman, in a mobility scooter, in the road was told to move down the street. But she was seen arguing with an officer that she would push other demonstrators into the road itself. She and other protesters are heard being told to stay on the pavement opposite the hotel. A Met spokesman said: 'Conditions to stay on the pavement remain in force, with officers still present.' It comes after a court heard that a protester attempted to force their way into the hotel after an asylum seeker walked into their blind mother's flat. Channay Augustus, 22, was one of 20 people who allegedly tried to barge into the property on Wednesday evening. The asylum seeker, in his 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of assault, the BBC reported. Ms Augustus confronted a security guard at the hotel after seeing the intruder in the flat. Thames Magistrates Court heard she then returned to the building holding a meat cleaver, which she started banging on a metal barrier outside the hotel. More Trending She will appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on September 12. The latest protest comes amid a wave of similar action outside several hotels housing asylum seekers across the country. One in Epping saw another march to the Bell Hotel; some came dressed as Saxons. A protest against 'illegal immigrants' also took place today in the town of Ashington in Northumberland. The first arrivals were taken in at around 1.40am to be given rooms. They were helped by masked security guards working as private contractors for the Home Office. The use of the flash financial district hotel, one of around 210 hotels in use for asylum housing, was previously branded as farcical and an 'insult' to taxpayers. When open to the public, a standard room had cost as much as £425 a night – though it will cost the Home Office £81 a night. Amenities include a games room with a pool table and gym, though it is unclear if migrants will be allowed to use them. An indoor pool and sauna are thought to have been shut down. A Tower Hamlets Council spokesman told The Sun previously: 'We are aware of the Government's decision to use the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf to provide temporary accommodation for asylum seekers. 'It is important that the Government ensures that there is a full package of support for those staying at the hotel. We are working with the Home Office and partners to make sure that all necessary safety and safeguarding arrangements are in place." The Home Office previously said: 'We inherited a broken asylum system from the Tories with costs spiralling out of control. 'As part of the plan to restore order and close all asylum hotels by the end of the parliament, we are boosting border security, substantially increasing removals of those with no right to be here. 'We are also tackling the Tories' wasteful contracts by ending the use of more expensive accommodation and moving to cheaper options.' A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "Low height fencing is in place at a site opposite the hotel, which will assist us in facilitating the protest, maintaining road safety and minimising disruption to everyone driving in Epping this evening. The former taller fencing has been removed. A daughter tried to storm a migrant hotel with a meat cleaver after she found an asylum seeker in her mother's flat 'moving his hands over his groin', a court heard. Channay Augustus, 22, is accused of being part of a group of around 20 people who tried to barge into the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf, east London, on Wednesday evening. The trouble started when she discovered a migrant as she cleaned her blind mother's ground-floor flat, a five-minute walk away from the hotel, Thames Magistrates' Court was told. She found the man, who was living at The Britannia Hotel nearby, 'moving his hand' over his genital area, Ms Augustus's lawyer Emma Clements said. After chasing him away, she went to the hotel at around 6pm where she confronted a security guard who was trying her calm her down. She returned a short time later with a meat cleaver and started banging it on a metal barrier outside the hotel, the court heard. She also shouted 'f****** asylum seekers', JPs were told. She was later arrested at her home. Augustus, an events worker, broke down in tears throughout the hearing and was joined in court by a number of family members. She is charged with possession of an offensive weapon, affray, assault on an emergency worker, common assault and possession of cannabis. Ms Augustus's grandmother broke down in tears as District Judge Jane McIvor denied bail in the case. During the hearing today, her lawyer indicated she would deny possession of an offensive weapon, affray, assault on an emergency worker and common assault. She admitted one charge of possession of cannabis. The migrant who entered her flat, who is in his early 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of assault, the Metropolitan Police said. Augustus, of Tower Hamlets, was remanded into custody to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on September 12. The hotel in London has been a focus of protests in recent weeks after Tower Hamlets Council confirmed it had been handed over to the Home Office to house asylum seekers. Last week, a crowd of anti-migrant protesters descended on the hotel to be met by counter demonstrators. Officers were seen pinning some activists on the ground, with two arrests made. One was an anti-migrant protester who was detained after a bottle was thrown at officers. The other was a member of the counter-protest group who was arrested for failing to remove their face covering. Police had to rapidly mobilise to contain a group of 'anti-fascist' activists arriving at South Quay station to confront anti-migrant protesters as they held signs that said 'no human is illegal' and chanted: 'Refugees have the right - here to stay, here to fight.' More than a hundred police officers moved to kettle the group outside the tube station for breaching the peace.

Augustus, 22, allegedly chased the man away before heading to the hotel at 6pm where she confronted a security guard. She returned a short time later with a meat cleaver and started banging it on a metal barrier outside the hotel, the court heard. Augustus then allegedly shouted: "f***ing asylum seekers". The migrant who entered her flat has been arrested on suspicion of assault, the Metropolitan Police said. The court was told Augustus will likely plead not guilty to possession of an offensive weapon, affray, assault on an emergency worker and common assault. She pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis during today's hearing. Augustus was remanded into custody to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on December 12.
