'Exceeding acceptable thresholds': World Aquatics event at Sentosa postponed over poor water quality, Singapore News

The World Aquatics Championships women's open water 10km race at Sentosa has been postponed as water quality failed to meet "acceptable thresholds", according to a statement by the organisers on Tuesday (July 15). Initially scheduled to kick off at 8am on Tuesday, the event will now take place on Wednesday at 10.15am, said the organisers in a press release in the early hours of Tuesday. The decision was made in the "utmost interest of athlete safety", after reviews by representatives from World Aquatics, the Singapore 2025 Organising Committee, the World Aquatics Sports Medicine Committee, and the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming Technical Committee. "While testing in recent days has consistently shown water quality at the venue to meet World Aquatics' acceptable thresholds, analysis of samples taken on 13 July surpassed these thresholds," said World Aquatics. And the decision to postpone racing was "made in the best interests of athlete health and safety", said the organisers. The organisers said they will continue conducting water tests to determine whether conditions are safe enough to proceed with the remaining events as scheduled. Open water swimming Open water swimming is a sport that involves swimming in an outdoor body of water, such as oceans, lakes and rivers. Unlike swimming in a pool, athletes are exposed to external factors like weather, waves and undercurrents. Additionally, bodies of water have to undergo testing for bacteria and pH levels before being deemed safe to swim in. Last year, the 2024 Paris Olympics were also affected by poor water quality when E. coli levels in the Seine River exceeded safe levels, causing the men's triathlon race to be postponed. Singapore is the host of this year's World Aquatics Championships which began on July 11, and has a 72-strong team of athletes representing the nation across all six sports. Singaporean athletes Chantal Liew and Kate Ona will be competing in the open water 10km race, along with 67 other athletes from around the world. [[nid:696519]]

World Aquatics Championships race at Sentosa postponed as water quality levels exceed 'acceptable thresholds'

SINGAPORE: Organisers announced the postponement of the World Aquatics Championships women's open water 10km race at Sentosa hours before the event was due to begin because of water quality levels exceeding "acceptable thresholds". In a press release in the early hours of Tuesday morning (Jul 15), World Aquatics announced that the decision was made in the "utmost interest of athlete safety". The race, which was planned for 8am on Tuesday, is now scheduled for 10.15am on Wednesday. Singapore Olympian Chantal Liew and youngster Kate Ona had been scheduled to compete in the race. The decision followed a review involving representatives from World Aquatics, the Singapore 2025 Organising Committee, the World Aquatics Sports Medicine Committee, and the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming Technical Committee, said World Aquatics. "While testing in recent days has consistently shown water quality at the venue to meet World Aquatics' acceptable thresholds, analysis of samples taken on Jul 13 surpassed these thresholds," said the sport's governing body in a press release. "The decision to postpone racing was made in the best interests of athlete health and safety, which remains World Aquatics and the Singapore 2025 Organising Committee's top priority." World Aquatics said that subsequent water samples and water quality review sessions will continue to take place at the competition venue, during which World Aquatics and the organising committee will determine whether conditions are safe to proceed with the event on a later date. "World Aquatics regrets the inconvenience caused by the postponement and acknowledges the commitment and preparation of all athletes, coaches, and teams," said the press release. Sentosa is the venue for the high diving and open water swimming events at the Championships, which began late last week with water polo group stage matches. While there has been much star power on show at the OCBC Aquatic Centre, some of the water polo matches have seen poor attendance. The Championships feature the six sports of swimming: water polo, diving, artistic swimming, open water swimming and high diving. They will be held until Aug 3.

Rescued crew of Greek ship sank by Houthis taken to Saudi Arabia

ATHENS - Ten mariners rescued after Houthi militants sank a Greek ship last week have arrived in Saudi Arabia, maritime security sources said on Monday, after rescuers ended their search for the remaining crew. The rescue mission began on Wednesday when the Iran-aligned group sank the Liberia-flagged Eternity C cargo ship, with 22 crew and three armed guards on board, after attacking the vessel with sea drones and rocket-propelled grenades over two consecutive days. Eight crew members and two security guards were rescued. All the crew were Filipino, except for one Russian. On Sunday, maritime risk management firm Diaplous and British security firm Ambrey said in a joint statement that the vessel's owner had decided to end the privately-run search for the remaining crew. "The decision to end the search has been taken by the vessel's owner reluctantly, but it believes that, in all the circumstances, the priority must now be to get the 10 souls safely recovered alive ashore," they said. The ship carrying the rescued crew has arrived in Jizan, a Diaplous official said. The remaining 15 people who were on board are considered missing, according to the vessel's Greece-based manager, Cosmoship. Five of them are believed to have died before the vessel sank, according to maritime security sources. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Cosmoship said that it was trying to verify the claim. Before attacking Eternity C the Houthis had sunk another Greek ship, the Magic Seas. Its crew were rescued by a passing ship. The EU's naval mission Aspides, which protects shipping in the Red Sea, has said that it had no naval assets in the area at the time of the attacks. No international naval force was present, according to maritime security sources. The Houthis have attacked more than 100 ships since November 2023 in what they say is an act of solidarity with the Palestinians over the Gaza war. REUTERS

LVMH's Loro Piana put under court administration in Italy over labour exploitation

Find out what's new on ST website and app. This is the second time one of the luxury group's businesses has been taken to court over labour issues. MILAN - An Italian court on July 14 placed under judicial administration LVMH's high-end Italian cashmere firm Loro Piana for indirectly subcontracting its production to Chinese-owned firms accused of exploiting workers, the latest brand to be embroiled in investigations into labour malpractice inside the Italian luxury supply chain. The court in Milan ordered a one-year administration for Loro Piana Spa, according to a 26-page ruling reviewed by Reuters, in the latest in a string of cases that have tainted the image of Italy's luxury brands. The administration will be lifted earlier if the company brings its practices into line with legal requirements. The court said Loro Piana Spa 'culpably failed' to adequately oversee its suppliers in order to pursue higher profits. Loro Piana could not immediately be reached for comment. LVMH, the world's biggest luxury group, acquired 80 per cent of Loro Piana in July 2013, leaving 20 per cent in the hands of the Italian family that founded the company. Loro Piana is the fifth fashion company to be targeted by the same Milan court over similar labour issues since December 2023, following Italian fashion group Valentino, an Italian unit of LVMH's Dior , Italy's Armani, and Alviero Martini, an Italian handbag company. Chinese swimmers dope-tested the most ahead of World Aquatics Championships

Find out what's new on ST website and app. From Jan 1, Chinese swimmers had an average of 8.8 anti-doping tests. HONG KONG – Chinese swimmers took more anti-doping tests in 2025 than swimmers from any other country ahead of the July 11-Aug 3 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, the Aquatics Integrity Unit said in a report. From Jan 1, Chinese swimmers had an average of 8.8 anti-doping tests versus those from the United States who were tested 4.1 times and those from Britain who were tested 2.2 times, the report showed. Swimmers competing as neutrals – mainly those with Russian nationality – were tested 8.2 times on average. In total the Aquatics Integrity Unit conducted 4,018 anti-doping tests on athletes participating in the Singapore event. 'The report underscores World Aquatics unwavering commitment to fair competition and the highest standards of integrity in aquatic sport,' it said. The China Swimming Association did not immediately respond to a request for comment. China's swimming team has faced heightened scrutiny since revelations in April 2024 that 23 swimmers had tested positive for a banned heart medication in 2021 but were permitted to compete in the Tokyo Olympics that year. Eleven of the 23 were selected for the Paris Games. The World Anti-Doping Agency accepted the findings of a Chinese investigation that the results were due to contamination from a hotel kitchen. An independent review backed the World Anti-Doping Agency's handling of the case. Testing will remain in force until the end of the event, with 830 samples to be collected during 24 days of competition, the Aquatics Integrity Unit said. China's male freestyle sprinter Wang Haoyu was tested 13 times, while 200 metre breaststroke world record holder Qin Haiyang was tested 12 times, the report showed. REUTERS
