What Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall said about ejection against LSU in CWS

LSU baseball bested Coastal Carolina in the College World Series finals to win the 2025 national championship in Omaha. It didn't take long for controversy to stir as Chanticleers' head coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected in the bottom of the first inning. According to Schnall, he barely heard a warning from home plate umpire Angel Campos and wasn't pleased with how the situation played out. "There's 25,000 people there, and I vaguely hear a warning issued," Schnall said. "As the head coach, I was an assistant for 24 years, and as an assistant, you're almost treated like a second-grade, second-level citizen, and you can't say a word. Now, as a head coach, I think it is your right to get an explanation of why we got warned." After the initial warning, Schnall continued to communicate from the dugout before emerging to talk with Campos. At the time, there were two outs, and Coastal had a runner on base. "I'm 48 years old," Schnall said. "I shouldn't get shooed by another grown man, right? So when I come out to ask what the warning is, a grown man shooed me. So at that point, I can now hear him say it was a warning issued for arguing balls and strikes. And at that point, I said, because you missed three. At that point, ejected." Schnall continued to plead his case after the umpires signaled his ejection, earning him an extra game of suspension. From his perspective, one of the umpires tripping and falling to the ground was the cause of the extra punishment. "If you guys watch the video, there was a guy that came in extremely aggressively, tripped over Campos' foot, embarrassed in front of 25,000," Schnall said. "[Campos] immediately goes 'two game suspension' and said, 'bumping the umpire.' [He] immediately does that. There was no bump. He was embarrassed. I shouldn't be held accountable for a grown man's athleticism." Schnall and Schilling will both miss the 2026 season opener. Had Coastal Carolina forced a game three, neither would've been in the dugout. The Chanticleers kept the game close, taking a 1-0 lead on a solo homer and cutting their deficit to two late. "It is what it is," Schnall. "But if that warranted an ejection, man, there'd be a lot of ejections. As an umpire, I feel like it's your job to manage the game."

LSU baseball vs Coastal Carolina live updates: Score for CWS finals Game 2

LSU will look to get that 53rd win of the season at 2:30 p.m. ET when it takes the field at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska against Coastal Carolina in Game 2 of the College World Series championship series. REQUIRED READING: Jay Johnson says Kade Anderson should be No. 1 overall pick in MLB draft to Nationals Tigers' ace Kade Anderson snapped the Chanticleers' 26-game win streak on June 21 with another dominant performance for his childhood team, as he struck out 10 in nine complete shutout innings of work. A win for LSU would give the Tigers their second College World Series title in three years, and eighth overall in program history. It'd also extend the SEC's dominance in Omaha with a sixth straight national title. The Chanticleers are facing elimination in the postseason for the first time this year, as they had been 8-0 in the NCAA baseball tournament before their loss to the Tigers. USA TODAY Sports is providing live updates, scores and highlights of Game 2 of the CWS championship series between Coastal Carolina and LSU. Follow along below: Coastal Carolina vs LSU baseball live score This section will be updated throughout the game Teams123456789FLSU0014000------CCU0100000------ Coastal Carolina vs LSU baseball live updates This section was updated with new information The top of the seventh inning extends for Darin Horn and Coastal Carolina, as Chanticleers second baseman Blake Barthol can't hold onto the ball on a high pop-up from Jared Jones that carried in the air for nearly five seconds. Barthol's error, which put runners on the corners for LSU with two outs, doesn't end up costing Coastal Carolina a run, as Horn struck out Luis Hernandez for the third out. It's 5-1 LSU going into the bottom of the seventh. Much like Kade Anderson in Game 1 of the CWS finals, LSU starter Anthony Eyanson continues to get sharper as the game progresses in Omaha. The right-hander gets back-to-back strikeouts to close the sixth inning, both coming on off-speed pitches, to increase his strikeout total to nine on the day. Coastal Carolina has now put a runner on base in 14 of the 15 total innings thus far in the CWS finals, but hasn't been able to do much damage off that. Stan the Man? More like Superman. On the second pitch of the sixth inning, LSU centerfielder Chris Stanfield comes up with an impressive diving catch to keep a potential extra-base hit off the board for Coastal Carolina. Great read and jump on the ball from Stanfield to come up with the catch. After getting two quick outs to begin the sixth inning, one of which came on an overturned call at first on a Coastal Carolina challenge, Hayden Johnson walks Michael Braswell to extend the inning. The Chanticleers' left-handed reliever then answers back by striking out Derek Curiel to keep the scoreless inning intact. It's starting to become make-or-break time for Coastal Carolina, as it is 5-1 LSU going into the sixth inning in Omaha. It's 5-1 LSU going into the sixth inning in Omaha, as Anthony Eyanson gets Blake Barthol to ground out to Daniel Dickinson at second for the third out. Eyanson has done a nice job throughout the afternoon getting out of mini-jams on the baselines. Coastal Carolina leaves another runner in scoring position in the inning, its third of the afternoon. The Chanticleers have struggled to find any sort of momentum since Dean Mihos' solo home run in the second inning gave them a brief 1-0 lead. Coastal Carolina continues to struggle at getting that big hit with runners in scoring position in the CWS finals, as the Chanticleers leave two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth. Working with his first big jam of the afternoon, LSU pitcher Anthony Eyanson throws a breaking ball in the dirt to get Ty Dooley swinging for the third out. The strike three pitch on Dooley from Eyanson was absolute filth, and it increases his strikeout total to seven. It's a four-run top of the fourth for LSU after the Tigers finally break through against Coastal Carolina right-hander Jacob Morrison. The rally for LSU began with loading the bases on a walk, a single and a hit-by-pitch with no outs in the inning. Anthony Eyanson heads back out working with a lead for the first time on the afternoon. If Coastal Carolina wants to get back in this one and force a Game 3, the Chanticleers will need some quality at-bats coming up here in the fourth. The Tigers aren't done scoring in the top of the fourth, as Derek Curiel comes up with a clutch two-out single up the middle to clear the bases and extend LSU's lead over Coastal Carolina to 5-1. Curiel will be the last hitter Jacob Morrison faces on the day, as the Coastal Carolina right-hander is pulled from the mound. Morrison is responsible for Curiel as Hayden Johnson comes into pitch. Chris Stanfield laces a 1-0 fastball into left field to give LSU its first lead of Game 2 of the CWS finals with a two-RBI single, allowing Jake Brown and Jared Jones to score. The Tigers are now 3 for 7 with runners in scoring position in the CWS finals. The Tigers have Jacob Morrison on the ropes here in the top of the fourth with runners on first and second and no outs. It's 3-1 LSU. Three batters into the fourth inning and LSU has the bases loaded as Coastal Carolina pitcher Jacob Morrison hits LSU catcher Luis Hernandez. Prime opportunity here for the Tigers to do some damage with Chris Stanfield coming up with no outs. Jared Jones lines one into left field to put runners on the corners to begin the top of the fourth inning for LSU. A great jump from Jake Brown, who worked a lead-off walk, allowed him to go from first to third on the play. The Tigers are knocking on the door here against Coastal Carolina. Anthony Eyanson gets LSU out of the third inning by getting Blake Barthol to chase a high fastball. Aside from missing his spot on that solo home run from Dean Mihos, the Tigers' right-hander has been strong on the mound, striking out six of his first 12 batters It's all knotted up at 1-1 going into the fourth inning between LSU and Coastal Carolina. Both teams have left two runners on base through the first three innings of action. Coming out of the in-between inning break, ESPN play-by-play broadcaster Karl Ravech mentioned that Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall was ejected from the game for continuing to argue with home plate umpire Angel Campos on ball-and-strikes after being warned. "Schnall was arguing balls and strikes, the umpire then gave him a warning and once you get a warning you can't come out of the dugout and argue. He was (then) ejected," Ravech said. Per the NCAA baseball rulebook, Schnall was also given a two-game suspension for prolonging the argument on the field. This means that if Coastal Carolina wins Game 2 of the CWS finals, he will not be eligible to manage Game 3 on June 23. REQUIRED READING: Who is Angel Campos? What to know of College World Series umpire after ejection Ethan Frey smoked a 1-1 fastball past the head of Coastal Carolina left fielder Sebastian Alexander and bounces off the wall, allowing Daniel Dickinson to come around from second and tie the game at 1-1. The ball came off Frey's bat at 114 mph. That will calm the emotions down a bit! Dean Mihos puts Coastal Carolina up in front of LSU 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run that carried over the left field wall thanks to the wind. It is the first lead of the CWS championship series for Coastal Carolina, and the first home run for the Chanticleers in Omaha. Three up, three down for Coastal Carolina pitcher Jacob Morrison in the top of the second inning. As Morrison was walking off the field, after getting Chris Stanfield to line out to first for the final out, he was seen talking to home plate umpire Angel Campos about something. ESPN's camera caught Coastal Carolina acting coach Chad Oxendine talking to the team between innings, perhaps in an effort to calm down the emotions of the Chanticleers after the ejections of head coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling. "He gathered the entire team over and said, "I need you to settle down. If you get run, you can't help us," ESPN's Kris Budden reported. Following a brief interruption on the field for the ejections of Coastal Carolina's Kevin Schnall and Matt Schilling, Anthony Eyanson comes back and gets Walker Mitchell to roll one over to LSU third baseman Michael Braswell for the third out of the inning. Eyanson recorded two strikeouts in the inning. Onto the second inning in Omaha. Home plate umpire Angel Campos has ejected Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall in the bottom of the first inning in Game 2 of the College World Series championship series. It remains unclear as to what led to Schnall's ejection, but things appeared to have escalated on the field. Coastal Carolina first base coach Matt Schilling was also ejected from the game after arguing with the umpires on the field on Schnall's ejection. Per the ESPN broadcast, Coastal Carolina recruiting coordinator Chad Oxendine is now serving as the Chanticleers' acting coach. Kevin Schnall blasts CWS ejection: 'I shouldn't get shooed by another grown man'

Coastal Carolina baseball fell to LSU in Game 2 of the College World Series championship series on June 22, and coach Kevin Schnall wasn't able to be with his team as the Chanticleers' season ended. Schnall was ejected in the bottom of the first inning for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Angel Campos, who threw out Schnall and Coastal Carolina first base coach Matt Schilling. It was a controversial call, not only because it came in a pivotal game during the championship series, but also because Schnall and Schilling both would have been unavailable for a winner-take-all Game 3 had the Chanticleers won Game 2. Schnall blasted the ejection in a postgame news conference following Coastal Carolina's 5-3 loss. "There's 25,000 people there and I vaguely hear a warning issued," Schnall said when asked whether he had been issued a warning before his ejection. "As the head coach, I was an assistant for 24 years. As an assistant you're almost treated like a second-grade, second-level citizen and you can't say a word. Now as a head coach, I think it is your right to get an explanation of why we got warned. And I'm 48 years old. I shouldn't get shooed by another grown man. So, when I come out to ask what the warning is, a grown man shooed me. "So, at that point I can now hear him say it was a warning issued for balls and strikes. And at that point I said, 'Because you missed three.' At that point, ejected. If that warrants an ejection, I'm the first one to stand here like a man and apologize." Schnall, a first-year head coach, was an assistant at Coastal Carolina under Gary Gilmore from 2001-12 and again from 2016-24 before being promoted. The veteran college baseball coach also shared his viewpoint on what transpired after he was ejected: As Schnall approached home plate umpire Angel Campos, first base umpire Casey Moser came over and tripped as he aimed to get in the middle of Schnall and Campos' exchange. "Two words that define are program are, 'Own it.' And what does that mean?" Schnall said. "It means you have to own everything that you do, without blame, without defending yourself, without excuses. If you guys watch the video, there was a guy that came in extremely aggressively, tripped over Campos' foot, embarrassed in front of 25,000, immediately goes 'two-game suspension,' and said 'bumping the umpire.' Immediately does that. "There was no bump. He was embarrassed. I shouldn't be held accountable for a grown man's athleticism. They'll retract it, though. Because now it's excessive and the reason why it was excessive is because I was trying to say, 'I didn't bump him.'" It's uncertain how Schnall's presence in the dugout would've impacted Coastal Carolina's result in Game 2, if at all. Associate head coach Chad Oxendine, who spent the previous three seasons as head coach for Longwood baseball, ultimately finished the game as acting head coach. But the decision to eject the Chanticleers' coach is one that'll certainly be remembered. "It is what it is, but if that warranted an ejection, man, (there'd) be a lot of ejections," Schnall said. "As an umpire, I feel like it's your job to manage the game, the national championship game, with some poise, some calmness and a little bit of tolerance."

Has Coastal Carolina won College World Series? Chanticleers aiming for another title

When the College World Series began just a week ago, Coastal Carolina was looked at by many to be the team that could blow up eight-team CWS bracket. After 12 total games played at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, the Chanticleers have done just that. Riding its nation-leading 26-game win streak, the third longest in Division I baseball in the last five years, Coastal Carolina has returned to the CWS championship series with wins in Omaha over Arizona, No. 8 Oregon State and Louisville (to say nothing of the Chanticleers' super regional sweep of No. 4 Auburn). Next up is No. 6 LSU in the finals, which get underway on June 21 at 7 p.m. ET. REQUIRED READING: College World Series bracket: Scores, schedule, teams, times, TV channel for CWS The Chanticleers' run in Omaha has been far from impressive and garnered praise from all around the college baseball world, including Louisville coach Dan McDonnell, who called Coastal Carolina an "efficient," "well-oiled machine" team after losing to the Chanticleers in the CWS semifinals. Entering the best-of-three championship series, Coastal Carolina leads all teams at the CWS with 24 runs scored and the second-best pitching staff ERA at 3.00. The Chanticleers now look to add to their trophy case and end a five-year stretch of an SEC team winning it all in Omaha. Here's what to know about the Chanticleers' history in the CWS championship: Has Coastal Carolina baseball won a national championship? Yes, Coastal Carolina baseball has won the College World Series once in program history, which came in its first trip to Omaha in 2016. The Chanticleers' national championship was historic in several facets: It was the first national title in program history; the first NCAA national championship for the Big South (then Coastal Carolina's conference); and marked the first time since Minnesota in 1956 that a team making its College World Series debut won it all. In that 2016 CWS championship series, Coastal Carolina reverse-swept Arizona, winning 2-1, to be the last team standing in Omaha. "We're not the most talented team in America. We're just the national champion," former Coastal Carolina coach Gary Gilmore said. "That's all that matters." He added: "This program has been a lot better than people give it credit for. They thought we played in a small conference and couldn't get this done. This bunch wanted to prove everybody wrong." REQUIRED READING: Coastal Carolina vs Arizona: Revisiting Chanticleers' 2016 CWS title win over Wildcats Coastal Carolina College World Series history Coastal Carolina has a miniscule history with the CWS championship — albeit a successful one. Two wins vs. LSU would make Coastal Carolina just the fourth team since the best-of-three championship series was added to the CWS format in 2003 — joining South Carolina in 2011, Arizona in 2012 and UCLA in 2013 — to win the national championship with a perfect 10-0 postseason record. Here's a breakdown of how the Chanticleers have fared in their trips to the CWS finals: Coastal Carolina NCAA baseball tournament schedule To make the College World Series, Coastal Carolina won the Conway Regional and Auburn Super Regional with a perfect 5-0 record. The Chanticleers won the Conway Regional with wins over No. 4 regional seed Fairfield (10-2) and No. 3 seed ECU, twice (18-7 and 1-0, respectively). They then beat No. 4 national seed Auburn 7-6 and 4-1, respectively. The Chanticleers have not lost a beat in Omaha, going a perfect 3-0 in the winner's bracket of Bracket 1 play with wins over Arizona, No. 8 Oregon State and Louisville. In its 11-3 CWS semifinal win over Louisville, Coastal Carolina led from the jump, plating six runs in the bottom of the first inning. For his part, Schnall there weren't any comparisons that came to mind between this team and the 2016 championship squad. "I wish I could give you an answer that you could really take off with, but I can't, no. It's different than the 2016 team. That 2016 lineup was so dangerous, 1 through 9 — power, speed, short game," Schnall said following the Chanticleers' win over Louisville. "This team is different. It's more grind, inside game, first to third, little things like that. And they play really high-level defense, even though we made two outfield errors this week. That's the only errors we made. We're fielding over .980 in the postseason which is pretty tough to do because you're in a lot of pressure situations" Here's a game-by-game breakdown of how Coastal Carolina has advanced to the 2025 College World Series championship series:

The move to offer free concessions runs counter to what some larger programs are doing to grow their revenue ahead of the House settlement, which is expected to be finalized next week and will allow larger athletic departments to share up to $20.5 million with athletes. The University of Tennessee announced in September a 10 percent 'talent fee' on the price of season tickets. Arkansas basketball also announced a shakeup in seating for season ticket holders in January, arranging seats by donors' donation levels. The move also is the latest and most dramatic in an effort by some teams to lessen the financial burden on fans attending games. When the Atlanta Falcons opened their new stadium in 2017, they debuted 'fan-first' pricing at concessions, featuring hot dogs, drinks and popcorn for $2, beers for $5 and pizza for $3. The Phoenix Suns also cut concession prices this season. The Falcons said the move resulted in a 30 percent rise in concession sales.
