‘The Sparrow in the Chimney' Review: Discomforting Behavior of the Comfortable Class
In the searing Swiss domestic drama 'The Sparrow in the Chimney,' a nanny with an interest in biology languidly observes, of the fireflies illuminating the air on a summer night, 'Fireflies glow to attract sexual partners. When they've found one, their light goes out.'
Romantic this movie is not, and given the overall dismal tone as well as a largely unlikable cast, it is targeted at a niche audience prepared to spend two hours on an acerbic character study that maps the dark dynamics of seemingly comfortable upper-middle-class folks. The movie is polished and bitter, like a fairy-tale poisoned apple.
