Man dies after being hit by SUV on Route 301 in Charles County, police say
CHARLES COUNTY, Md. () — A 44-year-old man died after he was hit by a car while trying to cross U.S. Route 301 (Crain Highway) in Charles County on Friday, according to police. Just before 2 p.m., troopers from Maryland State Police and deputies from the Charles County Sheriff's Office responded to U.S. Route 301 just north of Smallwood Drive for a serious collision involving a vehicle. Two hurt in crash involving Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service tanker At the scene, police learned that a Chevrolet Traverse driven by a 21-year-old man was traveling north of Smallwood Drive on Crain Highway when a pedestrian, identified as Edward Coates, 44, of Waldorf, was trying to cross the northbound lanes of the highway. That's when, for unknown reasons, Coates crossed into the travel path of the SUV, and it hit him, according to MSP. Medics tried to save Coates, but he died at the scene. Police noted that he was not in a marked or 'implied' crosswalk at the time of the crash. MSP urges anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Sergeant J. 2 charged, over $20k worth of stolen items found in Waldorf, deputies say
CHARLES COUNTY, Md. () — Charles County deputies said a man and woman were charged after they were accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of fragrances and clothes. According to the Charles County Sheriff's Office, the pair was connected to a series of retail thefts from a store on Mall Circle in Waldorf Deputies said that during the thefts, the man and woman entered the store and took nearly $3,000 worth of fragrances. They then returned the same day and stole more items. When deputies arrived at the restaurant, they found both suspects, Robert Lee Pettigrew, 52, of Brandywine, and Zatay Ejasia Owens, 26, of Bowie. Deputies said Pettigrew tried to run from authorities, but was taken into custody along with Owens. Following their arrest, detectives obtained a search warrant for Pettigrew's Range Rover and recovered about $20,000 worth of fragrances and clothing, which were believed to have been taken from other thefts. Elementary student found with knife during school dismissal in Charles County, deputies say
CHARLES COUNTY, Md. () — An elementary student is facing disciplinary actions after they were caught with a knife Tuesday, according to the sheriff's office. The Charles County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) said that on April 29, school staff at T.C. Martin Elementary School were notified during dismissal that an 11-year-old student had a knife.
