'More to come' from Guernsey after T20 World Cup exit
Guernsey captain Ollie Nightingale says his side can only improve following their experiences at the 2026 T20 World Cup European islanders had reached the final stage of qualifying for a T20 World Cup for the first time, but were beaten in all three of the games they were able to play - losing to Netherlands, Jersey and Italy and having their match with Scotland rained off."I think there's probably still more to come, but to be ranked where we are in the world is a good effort for the population," Nightingale told BBC Radio Guernsey."We know Guernsey tends to punch above their weight, but in cricket we really are at the moment. So hopefully we can keep growing, keep developing and we'll see what we can get to." Guernsey were the lowest-ranked side to make the finals - they are 37th in the world compared to Scotland who are 13th, Netherlands who are 15th and Jersey and Italy who are 27th and 32nd despite their underdog status, Nightingale feels his side's results did not match their ambitions going into the tournament in the Netherlands. "We came here hoping to try and nick a win or compete over a longer period, but we've learnt a few things," he said."We've had some good individual performances and we'll take back a lot of confidence as we go into the series back home this summer."To be back here in two years is probably the most important thing."You've got the likes of Charlie Forshaw and Harry Johnson here who are still young, so if we can bring them back in a couple of years, they're a couple of years older, a bit more experienced and we'll see what we can do."We've done something we've never done before and we've done good things for short periods of time, but now it's about doing it for longer periods of time, and only by doing that are you going to be able to compete."
