‘Bows volleyball returns home from NCAA Tournament

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team returned to O'ahu on Sunday following a straight-set loss to UCLA in the NCAA National Championship Tournament semifinal in Columbus, Ohio. Despite the season ending one win shy of a title match appearance, the Rainbow Warriors closed out another impressive campaign with a 27-6 overall record and their fourth Big West Conference Championship in program history. The 'Bows battled through late-season injuries but continued to show the depth and resilience that have become hallmarks of the Charlie Wade-led program. As the team now transitions into the offseason, it bids farewell to key contributors, including All-Big West honorees Kurt Nusterer and Eleu Choy. Nusterer, a junior middle blocker who will graduate and forgo his final year of eligibility to pursue a career in finance, reflected on the support and uniqueness of the Hawai'i volleyball community. 'I still will never be able to wrap my head around the fact that people love us that much, to make sacrifices like that to support us,' Nusterer said. 'It's the reason this program is successful and why it's going to continue to be successful. There's no place in the world that has that kind of support like we do, and that's why I'm here. That's why a lot of other people are here. It's the reason this place is so special.' Choy, a senior libero who played his final match for UH, expressed excitement for the program's future. 'I'm very excited about this program, especially with how much youth we have and how much more we can improve,' Choy said. 'We've already shown we can play at a high level, and I don't think we've hit our peak. I believe they'll be back in the national spotlight—and maybe even win it next year.' Looking ahead, the Rainbow Warriors return a strong core of talent, including All-Conference selections Tread Rosenthal, Adrien Roure and Kristian Titriyski, positioning them once again as national contenders in 2026. ‘Let's enjoy the ride:' UH ready for NCAA clash with Penn State

COLOMBUS, Ohio (KHON2) — The University of Hawaii Men's Volleyball team is just one day away from beginning their quest for another national title. KHON2 is in Ohio, where the NCAA championship is being held and got a closer look on how the 'Bows are preparing. The tournament is taking place at the Covelli Center at The Ohio State University Hawaii denied latest bid to host NCAA men's volleyball tournament The Rainbow Warriors will battle it out with the Penn State Nittany Lions — 2nd seed vs. 7th seed — at the 2025 Men's Volleyball National Championship at 7:30 a.m. Hawaii time on Thursday, May 8. KHON2 caught up with some of the Hawaii players and head coach Charlie Wade. They are feeling cool, calm, collected and ready to win it all. 'I think there's a level of confidence I've seen with the guys and how they're communicating with each other and the level of engagement that tells me, that we're ready to compete and, let's enjoy the ride,' Wade said. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You That confidence showed on the tournament court on Wednesday, May 7. The 'Bows held their first practice inside Covelli Center to get a feel for the space before Thursday's match. 'Every gym is different. There are lights in different spots. The service line is a certain distance back I mean you just got to go get used to playing in there,' said Tread Rosenthall, UH starting setter 'Well, you know, it's huge, just get acclimated with the lighting. This is a great facility built for volleyball. So no lights directly above the court. They're more comfortable serving, but, the more of, we just kind of get the cobwebs out, get the jitters out a little bit. So, certainly important first step for us,' coach Wade said. 'Bows win Big West Conference Championship in 4 sets Hawaii's team is no stranger to the NCAA championship stage — they have made it to three out of four of the last tournaments — but this group is still very much its own while stressing loyalty to the team's culture. 'So, everyone had like their own style of play. And I think once we all bought into it, like everything just evolved and our game just improved a lot, so I'm very excited to see what we can do in this tournament,' said 'Eleu Choy, UH starting libero. Their first test will be a rematch with Penn State — a team that the 'Bows beat in March at the Stan Sheriff. 'So you know, one of the the nice things is we have a game against a team we've already played before and I can really confidently say that nothing that they're going to do is going to be able to surprise us, it's all going to be what's going to be going on on our side of the net to determine the outcome of that game,' said UH starting middle Kurt Nusterer. UH volleyball faces rival BYU in Provo this weekend

The No. 4 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team faces its toughest challenge of the season with a two-match road series against No. 5 BYU on Friday, Jan. 31, and Saturday, Feb. 1, at Smith Fieldhouse. Both matches are scheduled for 4 p.m. HT. The Rainbow Warriors (5-0) were idle last week, while BYU (4-2) dropped back-to-back matches against No. 2 UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif. The Cougars lost the first contest in five sets before falling in straight sets in the rematch. This series marks the first meeting between the two programs since their clash in the 2021 NCAA Championship, where Hawai'i swept BYU to secure its first official national title. UH head coach Charlie Wade is on the verge of a milestone, entering the series with 298 career victories. With two more wins, he would become the fifth active Division I-II head coach to reach 300 career wins. Only 20 coaches in Division I-II history have surpassed the mark, including former UH coach Mike Wilton, who ranks 20th all-time with 316 victories. The all-time leader is UCLA's Al Scates, who recorded 1,239 career wins. The matchup will feature a familiar face, as BYU outside hitter Keoni Thiim previously played three seasons with the Rainbow Warriors (2022-24), appearing in 87 matches with 14 starts. Thiim is the grandson of Wilton. Hawai'i is led by sophomore setter Tread Rosenthal, who has been dominant this season with 243 assists through 22 sets, along with seven aces and 16 blocks. Freshman outside hitter Adrien Roure has also made an immediate impact, leading the team with 75 kills. Both matches will be televised live on BYUtv, available on Spectrum channel 409.
