Coronation Street icon sparks rumours she's set to quit Weatherfield as she makes drastic decision after five decades

A CORONATION Street icon has sparked rumours that she's set to quit Weatherfield as she makes a drastic decision after five decades on the cobbles. What follows contains spoilers for tonight's episode of the soap which is already available on ITVX. 4 4 4 Jenny Connor, played by Sally Ann Matthews, has been on the cobbles since 1986, and as the landlord of the Rovers Return, she's had her fair share of ups and downs. But after she discovered that her stepdaughter Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) had swiped her £60,000 inheritance things have gone from bad to worse. In tonight's episode, Jenny has confirmed that the deeds to the pub have been officially signed over to Carla. Now unemployed and homeless, Jenny is desperate to find work. Jenny was contemplating her future as she sat in the back room of the Rover Returns with Kabin owner Brian Packham and her foster mother Rita Tanner. When she turned to Brian and cheekily asked him whether he had any jobs available at the local newsagents. Brian replied: "Sorry, no. I've got my full compliment of staff at the moment." Dame Barbara Knox. She continued: "I'm a woman of a certain age and I'm hoping to wind down a little and I'm sure there may be some vacancies." A frustrated Brian informed Rita that he couldn't lose her because she was a vital cog in the machine. Coronation Street's Alan Bradley sets up date with Rita Fairclough "Well this old cog is going to wear out if I don't ease up, so think on," Rita replied. Brian then turned to a delighted Jenny and asked: "When can you start?" But despite Jenny's relief, fans might be wondering what this mean for Rita's future in the soap? Will she be another one of the many actors to exit the street? Corrie cash crisis: shock exits for 2025 ITV bosses are locked in a battle to save the cash-strapped soap. This means that a number of stars have either been axed from or have abandoned the long-running serial drama. Colson Smith - Craig Tinker The character of Craig Tinker has been axed by bosses after 14 years. After he was told of the news in Autumn 2024, Colson Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year. Craig's on-screen mum, Beth Tinker, also left the show in the summer when actress Lisa George was written out from the role. Sue Cleaver - Eileen Grimshaw After 25 years playing Eileen Grimshaw, former I'm A Celebrity campmate Sue Cleaver will quit the show. The Sun on Sunday reported in January that she's already begun to film her exit scenes. However the character will not be killed off in case Sue opts to make a return in the future. Luca Toolan - Mason Radcliffe Bosses decided to axe the teenage character after just 16 months after he first joined the show. Recent scenes saw Mason stabbed by his criminal brothers after his pal Dylan brought a knife in an attempt to defend him. Sue Devaney - Debbie Webster In November 2024, we revealed that Debbie Webster is set to be killed off after 40 years on the cobbles. The character will die as part of a heartbreaking long-running dementia storyline. Charlotte Jordan - Daisy Midgeley The actress became the fifth star to leave Coronation Street in just one month. We revealed that she will bow out of the ITV soap later this year after four years on-screen. Charlotte told sources that she's hungry to see what other opportunities await. Shelley King - Yasmeen Metcalfe The actress has played Yasmeen Metcalfe on the cobbles for the past 11 years and we revealed in January that she finished filming her final scenes. This follows the departure of her on-screen partner Stu Carpenter. A number of stars have been given the boot over the past few months with co-stars Luca Toolan (Mason Radcliffe) and Sue Devaney (Debbie Webster) having also been written out by bosses. Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw) and Charlotte Jordan (Daisy Midgeley) also opted to quit the programme following the high-profile exit of Helen Worth as Gail Platt after 50 years. But maybe Rita's plans to cut back - mean just that - after all she's been in the soap for over five decades. Rita was previously the owner of the newsagents, but she sold her remaining share of the business to Norris Cole in 2009. But she continued to stay on as one of the staff when Brian bought the shop in 2019. However the soap legend joined the street as a full-time cast member back in 1972 and is a mother figure to a number of the street's residents. Including Jenny Bradley (Sally Ann Matthews), Sally Webster (Sally Dynevor), Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), and Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell). She is also a great friend of Audrey (Sue Nicholls), Ken Barlow (William Roache) and Roy Cropper (David Neilson). And although her romantic flings may be well behind her, she brings humour and much warmth to the show. It would be a huge loss to the soap if there are plans for her to leave. 4

Inside the Corrie wealth gap as feud erupts over ‘favourites'… from megastar worth £6m to legend sued over £250k debt

IT'S made household names and national treasures over its 65 years on TV. But not all Coronation Street actors are created equally when it comes to fame and fortune, and - behind the scenes - there's starting to be backlash. 14 As the Sun has reported, a war has erupted on the cobbles regarding the earning potential and financial restrictions placed on stars on set. And what makes the issue so much tenser is the fact that the soap is currently undergoing massive budgetary cuts. According to insiders, high earners on set are noticing that their scenes are being cut or limited, to make way for 'cheaper' actors, or younger stars who are new to the industry, so earn less per episode. Amid the financial struggles of the UK's longest-running soap, many beloved faces are walking away from the cobbles for good, including Sue Cleaver, aka Eileen Grimshaw, and Charlotte Jordan, otherwise known as Daisy Midgeley. According to insiders, the issue is a matter of inconsistency: not only is there massive disparity between salaries on set, but many stars are paid per episode, meaning they're beholden to whatever storyline they're given. In the face of escalating costs and in a bid to save money, the soap is starting to cut scenes and limit screen times of the most expensive, more established stars. And without equal access to promo work outside the show, there's a massive feud brewing. As it stands, ITV must pre-approve any paid endorsements and commercial deals signed by its Corrie stars. However, while many requests are rejected straight out the gate, some of the show's 'favourites' are getting some nice little cash flows on the side. Take Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria Connor. She was recently featured in a promo reel for Marks & Spencer's cafe, alongside her Dancing on Ice husband, Sylvain Longchambon. There's also actress Sair Khan, aka Akya Nazir, who was recently allowed to promote an Italian oven from brand Bertazzoni - worth £2,500 - on her social media. Word inside the camp is that other colleagues are struggling to make ends meet, and it doesn't help that they're having their own promo offers blocked. As one actress on set recently told The Sun: 'It's one rule for the polished PR favourites, and another for the rest of us. 'If you're not part of the golden circle, forget it.' So, who are the ones breaking bank behind the scenes on the famous cobbles? And who are the actors falling short? High earners One big winner this year is Jack P. Shepherd, who's starred as David Platt since joining the show aged 12 in 2000. Over the years, he's risen to be one of the highest earners, raking in a reported £250,000. According to several reports, the actor is now worth £6million. But this year, he's had an even bigger financial boost, after starring on Celebrity Big Brother - and going on to win the show. As was reported at the time, Jack's £100,000 CBB salary didn't quite match the high earnings of some of his fellow housemates, including Mickey Rourke, who did initially stand to earn £500,000, before having his fee slashed after he was kicked off the show for bad behaviour. 14 14 14 But the fact that Jack won the whole thing last month, receiving 37.37 per cent of the votes, has opened the doors to whole new cash streams, with brands bidding to work with him. He's also had a boost to his online following, which also equates to higher earnings. With 492k followers, the actor could potentially earn between £1,500 and £2,200 per sponsored post. Nothing's been confirmed yet when it comes to brand deals, but it's unlikely that ITV would block any possible ventures he's got going on the outside, considering what a popular asset he is to the show. Keeping him on side is even more vital, considering the fact that many other stars are leaving the set for new opportunities. Likewise, actor Alan Halsall has found his golden goose as series regular Tyrone Dobbs, which is a role he's played since 1998. The 42-year-old reportedly earns £100,000 for his work on set. This may not rival Jack's pay packet, but Alan doubled down on his earning potential after entering the I'm A Celebrity jungle last year. He is said to have earned somewhere between £75,000 and £100,000 - ultimately finishing in sixth place. Again, this elevated him to a higher status in TV land, as show bosses can't help but recognise that he's another valuable asset to the franchise. It's therefore unlikely that he'd have some brand deals blocked as one of the show favourites. Other big earners up in Weatherfield include Barbara Knox, who - aged 91 - has signed a one-year deal, worth a reported £200,000, to ensure her beloved character Rita Tanner remains on the show until 2026. 14 14 14 There's also Michael Le Vell, who reportedly earns £170,000 to play the show's longstanding mechanic Kevin Webster. Yet despite the sizeable pay packets, some of the show's most beloved stars haven't been without their financial hardships. Money troubles Corrie legend Bill Roache is, undoubtedly, one of its highest earners - and also holds the title of the show's longest-running star, having first stepped onto the cobbles when it was first broadcast in 1960. It's no surprise, then, that he's also its highest earner - raking in over £250,000 for his role as Ken Barlow. Still, the actor faced financial ruin last year, after narrowly avoiding bankruptcy. The now 93-year-old had previously invested in a business venture in the Cayman Islands, which HMRC believed to be part of a tax avoidance scheme. He was duly ordered to pay off £550,000 within 12 weeks - under the threat that, if he failed to do so, he'd have to declare bankruptcy. This came 25 years after the actor was previously declared bankrupt in 1999. Thankfully for him, his second financial scare wasn't as damaging. After a hearing last year, the case was dismissed, and he was ultimately slapped with legal fees of just £1,129.20. The actor is now believed to be worth around £3.9million. 14 14 Meanwhile, Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald on the ITV show, was forced to liquidate his company, Simon Gregson Productions Ltd, in 2023 amid mounting debts. The 50-year-old, who reportedly earns £150,000 on the show, had previously borrowed money from the company - which he was then ordered to repay £1,500 per month. If he and his wife, Emma, ultimately fail to make the repayments - to the sum of £252,83 - within three years, they've been told they'll be forced to sell their family home. Cutting costs With so much disparity between the personal fortunes of Corrie's stars, it's no surprise that a storm is now brewing behind the scenes, especially since bosses are keen to cut costs as much as possible. As we previously revealed, ITV bigwigs have reduced filming schedules of some stars, following a massive loss of funding. In an attempt to claw back some money, bosses also previously applied to trademark the 'Corrie' brand, which would allow them to sell items to fans including toiletries, cosmetics, soaps and perfumes. But that's not enough to keep the beloved soap afloat, and other drastic action has been taken. They wouldn't let most of us even do a teeth-whitening collaboration, meanwhile Samia's out here posing with pastries. Unnamed Corrie actress Some actors have reportedly been put on part-time contracts, meaning they're paid per episode, and have also seen their filming schedules reduced. While big names could expect to earn up to £2,000 per episode, other lesser known actors, with new roles, might make as little as £400 for an appearance - making them a more affordable choice. As we've revealed, there's already been a mass exodus of stars. 14 14 14 As well as Sue Cleaver and Charlotte Jordan, the likes of Colson Smith, who plays Craig Tinker, Shelley King, aka Yasmeen Metcalfe, and Sue Devaney, otherwise known as Debbie Webster, are also making their exits. Of course, they could simply be seeking adventures new, but insiders say the real reason is that the money simply isn't cutting it on set, especially amid budget cuts. A Coronation Street spokesperson has said: 'We do not discuss individual cases, but the cast are aware that all requests for commercial deals go through an approvals process and are dealt with on a case by case basis.' But according to the unnamed actress, who's had her own deals blocked, there's a clear sense of preferential treatment on set. She told the Sun: 'They wouldn't let most of us even do a teeth-whitening collaboration, meanwhile Samia's out here posing with pastries. It's a total p**s take. 'We've been told time and time again: no ads, no endorsements - not so much as a candle on Instagram. 'But then Samia pops up in a full-blown promo for M&S and everyone's just supposed to pretend it's normal? 'People are keeping quiet as they don't want to rock the boat or get the boot, but there's a lot of anger.' She added: 'Why are some allowed to cash in, while the rest of us struggle?' Inside Coronation Street star Charlotte Jordan's life from 'real' voice to pop star past

As Charlotte Jordan bows out of Coronation Street, we've taken a look at the life of the actress who has played Daisy Midgeley in the ITV soap for almost five years Charlotte Jordan is saying a fond farewell to Coronation Street as she departs from the cobbles after an eventful nearly five-year stint playing Daisy Midgeley. Yet, it seems she won't be straying too far from the world of soaps. Daisy, who is Jenny Connor's stepdaughter, made her Weatherfield entrance in 2020. Coming from a strained relationship with her mother, Daisy moved into the pub and reconnected with Jenny after years apart. ‌ However, she soon stirred trouble by pushing for Jenny's split from her then-husband, Johnny Connor and was instrumental in causing the breakup between Ryan Connor and Alya Nazir. Daisy found herself at the heart of a blackmail scheme and endured a terrifying ordeal when she and Ryan were targeted in an acid attack by stalker Justin Rutherford. ‌ She also schemed her way into becoming co-owner of the Rovers Return alongside Jenny and was embroiled in a paternity drama after falling pregnant, only to suffer the heartbreaking loss of her baby in a hit-and-run incident, reports the Manchester Evening News. But now, Daisy has chosen to bid farewell to Weatherfield, with her last episode airing on Friday, 2 May. Announcing her departure in January, the actress expressed: "My time at Coronation Street is something I'll always cherish." She added: "After a brilliant four years for Daisy, it's time for me to start a new chapter and explore other opportunities. It's been a privilege to be part of a wonderful institution with even more wonderful colleagues who have taught me so much." Fans may recognise the 30 year old as a familiar face on Corrie, but before she waltzed onto the cobbles towards the end of 2020, she was basking in Netflix glory. She shone as Gaby Grant in the series Free Rein for two seasons. Rewinding to her early beginnings, Charlotte actually broke into the acting world with an episode of The Bill in 2007, where she went by the name of Charlie Evans. Under this alias, she also took on Serena in the Nickelodeon series Summer in Transylvania between 2011 and 2012. ‌ Fast forward to 2016, she embraced the name of Charlotte Jordan, venturing into the film world with Angel of Decay and dropping by BBC's Casualty. Afterwards, she hopped into the Free Rein saddle before ultimately landing on Corrie. But Charlotte's journey could have led her down a pop star path instead. Speaking with Metro, Charlotte revealed: "When I was 15 and in my last year at school, I auditioned for a band that was being created by Simon Fuller and Geri Halliwell. ‌ "It was a development deal, which means we spent a lot of time bonding, doing choreography and recording songs in the studio – sometimes cool songs, sometimes naff songs. You just try to find your sound. "When they felt like we'd exhausted all options as a group, I was offered a solo deal. I did that for another two years and then, as I got older, I realised that acting was what I actually wanted to do and decided to go back to it. Just because you can sing, doesn't necessarily mean you should be a singer." ‌ Interestingly, fans have often been taken aback by Charlotte's authentic accent. Just prior to her final scenes on Corrie, she made an appearance on This Morning to discuss her departure, leaving viewers surprised not to hear a northern accent, as she actually hails from Cobham, Surrey. One commented on X, formerly Twitter: "I didn't expect Daisy to sound like that! Great northern accent." A second asked: "Her voice?!" A third noted: "She suits the Manc accent that she acts with." Since her Corrie debut, Charlotte has amassed a collection of prestigious awards. At the British Soap Awards 2023, she received the Best Dramatic Performance award and was also nominated for Best Leading Performer. ‌ Additionally, she secured not one but two wins at the Royal Television Society's (RTS) North West Awards, taking home the Best Performance in a Continuing Drama Award, while Coronation Street won the Best Continuing Drama Storyline award for Daisy's stalking plot. Meanwhile, Charlotte recently revealed her plans post-Corrie during an appearance on This Morning. "I do feel excited; it's a fresh start," she expressed. "I feel like I've done a lot of soapy things. I've done the checklist. [Coronation Street] has been really good to me, and it just feels like time for a new beginning." This Morning's resident soap guru Sharon Marshall then chimed in with: "But next, The Archers?" Charlotte seemed slightly reserved as she confirmed this would indeed be her next venture, although she couldn't divulge too many details. "Yes, I am. I am joining The Archers, which is really fun," she confirmed. "I start very soon, I can't say very much about it, but the character will ruffle some feathers. That's what I can say."

Although she admitted she "couldn't say too much", the actress revealed she was heading over to the airwaves to be part of the cast of Radio 4's, The Archers. The radio drama - which is the world's longest running soap - follows the residents of the fictional farming community of Ambridge. While she couldn't reveal more about her character, Charlotte admitted she was "looking forward to a fresh start". Speaking about her last day of filming Coronation Street, she said: "I cried a lot on my last day - it was on and off sobbing for hours." Fans will also be thrilled to hear that bosses have "left the door open" for her. QUITTING THE COBBLES In January, Charlotte shocked fans when she announced she was leaving Corrie. In an emotional statement, she said: 'My time at Coronation Street is something I'll always cherish,' she said at the time. 'It's been a privilege to be part of a wonderful institution with even more wonderful colleagues who have taught me so much. 'After a brilliant four years for Daisy, it's time for me to start a new chapter and explore other opportunities.' The Sun then revealed last month how Charlotte had filmed her final scenes for the soap. Fans will have to wait until the summer to see how she will wave goodbye to the cobbles, A source said: 'Charlotte wrapped her time on the cobbles and had a leaving party recently. 'It was very lowkey as she wanted. She'll be very missed.' PLAYING DAISY Since arriving in 2020, Charlotte's character Daisy has been part of the soap's biggest moments including her stalking ordeal and a plot which saw her take over the Rovers with stolen money. She won the British Soap Award for Best Dramatic Performance after Daisy was the victim of a wedding day acid attack by Justin Rutherford (Andrew Still). At Christmas, Daisy discovered she was pregnant with the baby of ex Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) or new lover Kit Green (Jacob Roberts). After lying to Daniel that it was his baby, Daisy suffered a miscarriage and revealed that Kit was the true father. She has reunited with Daniel since as her exit storyline kicks into gear. A source added: 'Charlotte has loved her time on the cobbles but is young, ambitious and hungry to see what else is out there for her. 'She told bosses last April that her next contract would be her last, giving them a year to craft an exciting exit storyline. Coronation Street's 2024 shock exits Corrie has said goodbye to several cast members this year. Let's break down who's left the famous soap: Eliza Woodrow (Savannah Kunyo) has said farewell to Corrie to start a new life in Germany. The youngster moved to live with her dad Dom Everett, who went back on the £10,000 bribe Eliza's grandfather Stu had offered to keep him out of her life. Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) will bow out of the soap this summer when he loses his fight with motor neurone disease (MND) in tragic scenes. After being diagnosed last year, the fan favourite was devastated to learn he only had months left to live. Viewers know he is planning to take his own life to end his suffering. Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) departed the cobbles after being offered the opportunity of a lifetime to study in America. Though she struggled to decide with her stepdad Paul's impending death from MND, she was convinced she had to live her life to the full. Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) has struggled with the sudden departure of his father Peter from the cobbles. The Weatherfield legend left his family and loved ones behind on Boxing Day, 2023, when his wife Carla Connor encouraged him to travel around the world with a friend. Simon's been on a downward spiral ever since and his exit could end in tragedy. Alya Nazir is set to leave the cobbles as actress Sair Khan prepares to go on maternity leave ahead of the birth of her first child. It looks likely she'll be heading to Dublin after securing a lucrative new job, leaving her colleague and fling Adam Barlow behind. Show stalwart Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, is taking a break to star in the Sister Act The Musical UK tour. She will be back filming in May once her dates on the tour come to an end. Her character left the Street after her son Jason broke his back after falling off a moped in Asia.
