No major impact from inclement weather in CT, Disaster Risk management to stay on high alert

CAPE TOWN - The South African weather service has revised its yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall in Cape Town to a yellow level 2. A powerful cut-off low system has hit parts of the country resulting in a cold front that may lead to snowfall in various provinces. The City of Cape Town's Disaster Risk Management centre has assured citizens that it remains on high alert. While temperatures have dropped significantly, the City has received no reports of major weather-related incidents but will be monitoring for further impact. "Thus far, no significant impacts have been reported to the disaster operations centre, although this situation might change as the day progresses," said spokesperson for the centre, Charlotte Powell. "The public is reminded to direct any requests for city services via the online platforms or the customer call centre on 0860 103 089."

Cape Town fire displaces hundreds as severe weather approaches

A fire destroyed 45 shacks in a Khayelitsha informal settlement, Cape Town, displacing more than 100 people. Image: Supplied / Gift of the Givers As severe weather settled over Cape Town, a devastating fire in Silvertown, Khayelitsha, left over 140 people displaced and destroyed 45 structures in the early hours of Saturday morning. Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell confirmed the fire broke out late Friday night, with city officials conducting assessments the following morning. 'Following an assessment by Disaster Risk Management officials this morning, it was determined that 45 structures were destroyed, impacting 145 individuals,' she said. City departments have been mobilised to clear debris and restore damaged municipal infrastructure. Humanitarian assistance is being provided by The Salvation Army and Gift of the Givers, while the names of affected residents have been submitted to SASSA and the National Department of Human Settlements for additional support. Ward councillor Thando Pimpi said the community suspects a candle may have caused the fire. 'Some residents didn't have electricity and had to use candles. The displaced people are now housed in churches, while others have sought shelter with relatives,' Pimpi said. Video Player is loading. Gift of the Givers project coordinator Ali Sablay said their teams remain on standby as more severe weather is forecast for the weekend. 'This comes at the end of a challenging week, with disaster response operations under way in Khayelitsha, Kosovo, and Samora Machel informal settlements, where fires have displaced numerous families,' said Sablay. 'Emergency aid, including hot meals, bottled water, food parcels, blankets, hygiene supplies, and building materials, is being distributed to affected residents.' He added that teams were also deployed in Thembalethu, George, on Saturday morning, where another fire destroyed several structures. Relief is being provided, and further needs are being assessed. Sablay said additional resources have been pre-positioned in anticipation of further weather-related emergencies. 'The teams are working with community leaders, local authorities, and disaster management stakeholders to ensure a rapid and coordinated response. Gift of the Givers remains committed to restoring dignity and providing hope to those affected by disaster.' Meanwhile, Powell said the city's Disaster Risk Management Centre is closely monitoring the weather impacts, after the South African Weather Service upgraded its rainfall advisory from Level 2 to Level 4 on Friday afternoon. 'So far, no significant incidents have been reported to the Disaster Operations Centre, though this may change as conditions evolve,' she said. Residents can report service-related requests via the city's online platforms or call the Customer Call Centre on 0860 103 089. Emergency incidents should be directed to the Public Emergency Communication Centre at 021 480 7700.

Princess Royal to visit 140th Lincolnshire Show

The Princess Royal is to visit the Lincolnshire Show next month to celebrate its 140th edition. About 60,000 people are expected to turn out at the two-day event near Lincoln, which is best-known for its livestock and equine competitions. Princess Anne, who previously served as president of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, is to attend the show on 18 June, organisers have said. Charlotte Powell, chief executive of the society, which runs the event, said: "The Lincolnshire Show is always a significant event for the county, but it feels extra special this time as we celebrate our 140th show." Television presenter Matt Baker, who fronts the BBC's Countryfile, is due to make a guest appearance on the second day of the event at the Lincolnshire Showground. For the first time, the show will host an amateur jousting performance by The Knights of Middle England, which will include stunt riders, actors and combatants. Meanwhile, a new Rural Voices Stage will host panel discussions and debates. The Lincolnshire Show beach will return after it was introduced to the event last year, when about 60 tonnes of sand was transported 40 miles (64km) from the coast. Ms Powell said it would be an "absolute pleasure and honour" to welcome the princess to the show. She added: "From the very first show in 1869, the event has been a source of pride and celebration for everyone involved with the county of Lincolnshire, and we can't wait for everyone to see all the hard work that has gone into this year's event." Alongside the activities, the Lincolnshire Show champions local produce, celebrates the county's best businesses and stages a host of family attractions. More than 500 exhibitors and about 2,500 animals attend the event. Cape Town dodges severe cold front impact: Week ahead brings calmer weather

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for damaging winds and waves on Thursday ahead of a powerful cold front which lashed the Western Cape from Friday evening into Saturday. Image: Armand Hough/Independent Newspapers While Capetonians had to cope with cold and inclement weather in the city this weekend, the City of Cape Town's Disaster Risk Management said it was pleased that they received no reports of significant incidents. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for damaging winds and waves on Thursday ahead of a powerful cold front which lashed the Western Cape from Friday evening into Saturday. On Saturday, the City of Cape Town's Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell said that they were pleased that the City's Disaster Operation Centre had no reports of significant incidents related to the weather conditions. On Sunday, the City said that there was no change in status and that relevant services remain on standby to respond if necessary. SAWS forecaster, Joew Malebane, said that they have been liaising with their disaster management representatives, trying to gather observations and the impacts of damaging winds in areas where warnings were sent due to the previous cold front. 'While this system came with damaging winds and cold and rainy conditions, it is empirical to note that it was not particularly an intense front. 'As we know Western Cape, is in the winter rainfall season, therefore we are more likely to see more typical fronts and those with intensified nature as we transition into the winter season,' Malebane said. 'This coming week we will be experiencing calmer and fine weather from today onwards as a high pressure (system) will dominate the country, and possibly bring some warmer temperatures in places of Northern Cape and the Western Cape. 'The next significant cold front passage may be possibly seen in the next two weeks' time; the forecast has potential of changing course and the system might weaken before approaching, so keep tabs open on our social media platforms and website for more weather warnings.' The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for damaging winds and waves on Thursday ahead of a powerful cold front which lashed the Western Cape from Friday evening into Saturday. Next Stay Close ✕ Meanwhile, SANParks said on Friday it was still managing occasional flareups at Tokai and Silvermine and urged the public to keep off trails for their own safety. 'It would be premature to allow the public back at the trails whilst clearance of nails and pins is still underway. The area remains unstable under foot. 'We appeal to the public not to enter closed trails because it could be dangerous and result in trampling of emerging vegetation or disturbance of wildlife that has minimal areas of refuge while the vegetation cover regrows. 'At this stage it is impossible to predict when the closed areas will be opened,' they said. SANParks said that the SAWS rain forecast for this weekend 'will necessitate another assessment as rains will inevitably destabilise slopes and cause localised rockfalls'. The Cape Peninsula Civil Conservation provided an update for hikers on trails: Upper Tokai and surrounding trails—this includes all hiking, horse-riding, and mountain biking trails in Upper Tokai. Silvermine East and West —both Gate 1 (Dam) and Gate 2 (Waterfall)—are also closed, along with all trails leading to Silvermine. Echo Valley, Peak's Valley, Ou Kraal, Old Boyes Drive, and the Kalk Bay trails are not accessible at this time.
