Astros' Yordan Alvarez takes big step toward injury return

The post Astros' Yordan Alvarez takes big step toward injury return appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Houston Astros may lead the American League West by five games, but they are dealing with injury trouble at the moment. Houston received an encouraging Yordan Alvarez update on Friday, however, via Chandler Rome of The Athletic. 'Yordan Alvarez is swinging again,' Rome wrote on X, formerly Twitter, before providing a number of other important Astros updates. 'Chas McCormick has been reinstated from the IL and Kenedy Corona was optioned. Spencer Arrightetti and Cristian Javier headed to Double-A Corpus Christi this week. Luis Garcia is going to Single-A Fayetteville. Jeremy Peña is in Florida.' Alvarez is dealing with right hand inflammation. The Astros — who play the Seattle Mariners this weekend — will closely monitor his status. The fact that Alvarez is swinging a bat is especially encouraging given the fact that he is battling a hand injury. Alvarez has been limited to 29 games played during the '25 season because of injuries. During that time, the 28-year-old has slashed just .210/.306/.340 to go along with a .646 OPS and three home runs. Although those numbers are far from ideal, Alvarez features the talent of a serious MVP candidate. He made three consecutive All-Star teams from 2022-2024 and finished within the top 10 of AL MVP voting twice during that span, even earning a third place finish in 2022. At 56-40, the Astros hold a five-game lead over the 51-45 Mariners in the AL West. The Astros-Mariners three-game weekend series is certainly important given the standings. A Mariners' sweep would instantly place Seattle back in serious contention for the division lead. An Astros sweep would lead to an extremely convincing division advantage, though. Friday night's first pitch is scheduled for 10:10 PM EST in Seattle as the Astros look to get the job done on the road. As for Yordan Alvarez, updates will continue to be provided on his injury status as they are made available. Astros Insider Predicts 2022 World Series Hero Playing Last Games in Houston

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Houston Astros look a lot different than they did the last time they won a World Series, but they're a very legitimate threat to win it all again. Despite the offseason losses of Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman, plus injuries to Yordan Alvarez, Jeremy Peña, and half of the pitching staff, the Astros just keep plugging. Entering play on Friday, they had a 60-43 record and a five-game lead atop the American League West. The Astros don't necessarily need to do a lot before Thursday's trade deadline, as most of those injured players are expected to eventually return. However, there are still some players who should have their heads on a swivel. (Photo by)That includes, as one insider suspects, an outfielder who was a memorable part of that 2022 World Series run. On Friday, The Athletic predicted one player per team who would be traded before the deadline, and Astros beat reporter Chandler Rome named outfielder Chas McCormick as the most likely Astro to be dealt. "Houston's major-league roster is so ravaged by injury that it's difficult to envision any player getting moved, but McCormick makes the most sense if one does," wrote Rome. "He is the odd man out of a full-strength Astros outfield, has one more season under club control and is making $3.4 million — not an insignificant sum for a Houston team that may have to move money around if owner Jim Crane doesn't authorize crossing the luxury tax threshold." McCormick, 30, was good in 2022 and even better in 2023, posting a 3.5-win season with a 130 OPS+ in the latter year. And his most memorable moment as an Astro came in Game 5 of the Fall Classic, when he made a leaping grab of a would-be extra-base hit from Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto to preserve a 3-2 win. But with a .561 OPS in 41 games this year, it's hard to justify giving McCormick consistent at-bats these days. Perhaps some team believes he can recapture some of that magic with a change of scenery, in which case it makes sense for Houston to clear him off the active roster. Astros place outfielder on IL after Yordan Alvarez update

The post Astros place outfielder on IL after Yordan Alvarez update appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Houston Astros received some unpleasant injury news Saturday. The club believed that DH Yordan Alvarez was nearing a return from the IL. However, a new update revealed a more significant issue. Alvarez has a small fracture in his hand, which will complicate the slugger's return to the lineup. Advertisement The Astros also announced that outfielder Chas McCormick was placed on the 10-day IL due to a left oblique strain, according to Brian McTaggart on X. Houston called up infielder Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A in a corresponding move. The Astros' injury woes continue with Chas McCormick IL stint Erik Williams-Imagn Images McCormick has spent his entire career in the Astros organization after being drafted in 2017. He debuted with Houston in 2021 and won the World Series with the team the following season. McCormick had his best year in the majors in 2023 when he posted an .842 OPS and 130 OPS+ with 22 home runs, 70 RBI, 59 runs scored, 19 stolen bases and 3.4 bWAR in 115 games. Advertisement Despite a disappointing 2024 campaign, the Astros signed McCormick to a $3.4 million contract for 2025. Through 36 games this season he's slashing .256/.347/.302 with an OPS+ of 87. McCormick had an opportunity to step up for Houston after the departure of Kyle Tucker over the offseason. Unfortunately, he's done very little this year to help his case. Considered one of the Astros' most disappointing players in 2025, he was passed on the depth chart and faces an uncertain future in Houston. Alvarez, of course, has also disappointed fans in 2025. Although injuries have largely been responsible for his down year. Alvarez dealt with a thumb injury during spring training and then hit the IL with a hand ailment at the beginning of May. While the Astros were optimistic the three-time All-Star would be activated when first eligible, it started to become unclear how severe the muscle strain in his right hand actually was. Manager Joe Espada became evasive about Alvarez's return timeline as the seventh-year veteran remained sidelined. Now it seems that a previously undiscovered fracture has been causing the delay. When he's been healthy enough to play, Alvarez has struggled this season. He's produced a .646 OPS, 84 OPS+ and -0.3 bWAR in 29 games for the Astros in 2025.

3 Astros who must be on trade block ahead of 2025 deadline

The post 3 Astros who must be on trade block ahead of 2025 deadline appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Houston Astros 45-33 heading into Tuesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Houston's general manager hinted that he has some big plans at the trade deadline. However, more than a month away from the July 31 deadline, the Astros have given themselves plenty of room for error. Advertisement Houston holds a sizable lead over the Seattle Mariners and the rest of the American League West. After a disappointing exit at the hands of the Detroit Tigers in last year's postseason, the Astros came back with a vengeance. Manager Joe Espada and the team's veterans have a good chance to cap off Major League Baseball's modern day dynasty with one last title this season. Despite their success, Houston has areas on the team they need to address. Luckily for them, they have an surplus of talent at specific positions that they can dangle out in trades. The main goal for the team remains getting Jose Altuve back to playing second base full time in front of Mauricio Dubon. Chas McCormick is another player that has been played out of his position in the outfield. However, McCormick is dealing with injury, something Lance McCullers Jr. knows all too well. Despite their issues and the absence of Yordan Alvarez from the Houston lineup, it has been business as usual for the Astros. Espada and the front office have some pieces to play with at this year's trade deadline. The trick is to not sacrifice too much of the future in a mad dash to win this year's title. Advertisement Here are three players that Houston should put on the trade block before the deadline. Second Baseman Mauricio Dubon Orlando Ramirez-Imagn Images Mauricio Dubon was thrust into action at second base at the beginning of the season. After the Astros sent Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs, there was a void in the outfield. Espada chose to have Altuve try to and fill the hole, but it has been a struggle for Houston. Dubon, on the other hand, has done decently well with opportunity he has been given. Dubon joined the Astros in the middle of the 2022 season and has been an iron man since arriving. The seven-year pro is working on his third straight season playing at least 100 games for Espada and the Astros. That kind of dependability is valuable to teams looking to add help in the infield. Advertisement One of Houston's top priorities at the deadline is getting help in their outfield. They have their eyes on big names across the league, and if they get one of them, Altuve can go back to the infield. Once he does, Dubon could be bumped to the second string of Espada's roster, making him expendable. Houston could make the most of his stability and sell high on him to a contender that needs help in the infield. Starting Pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. Troy Taormina-Imagn Images Lance McCullers Jr. had a long road back to the mound after injury. When he was back and was settling in, fans were hopeful. However, a foot injury might have revealed a sad reality for the two-time World Series champion. At 31 years old, the veteran righty is only going to become more injury prone. That unpredictability is a big detriment in high-leverage games. Advertisement The Astros are known for developing excellent pitchers, whether they are starters or relievers. Frambez Valdez and Hunter Brown lead the rotation, but Colton Gordon, Ronel Blanco, and Ryan Gusto have all had their moments. Espada has plenty of starters at his disposal. He'll get another weapon back as soon as Christian Javier is approved for his return to Houston from injury. McCullers Jr. is not the worst of that group of starters by a long shot. However, he is the most proven and the one most likely to help a contender this season. At the trade deadline, teams looking for big additions value the short-term over the long-term. McCullers Jr. offers plenty of the former, making him a prime trade candidate. Outfielder Chas McCormick Erik Williams-Imagn Images While the Kyle Tucker move sent Altuve to the outfield, it also cleared the way for Chas McCormick. The former top prospect was supposed to capitalize on the opportunity and a stellar season in 2023 to bounce back from a rough 2024. Unfortunately he underperformed before an injury sent him to the Astros' IL. Advertisement Now that he is there, attention has shifted to players like Jacob Melton and Jake Meyers, both of whom have shown flashes this season. Bringing in another outfielder could put the writing on the ball for the rest of McCormick's season. Despite his struggles, he has built up enough goodwill with Houston that Espada and the front office will consider any trade involving him seriously. Plenty of teams around the league need help in the outfield on both sides of the ball. McCormick has a history of being a well-rounded player, even if it has been a while. The fact that he is buried on Espada's depth chart might play a factor in his decreased production, though. A new team and different situation could be all that he needs to show out once again. Astros Outfielder Could Make Interesting Target for the Phillies

Astros Outfielder Could Make Interesting Target for the Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies' outfield has been an overwhelming problem this season; and it is one that could severely hinder the team in the postseason. The Phillies have three outfield options that are struggling at the plate while their only productive hitter, Nick Castellanos, has been among the worst outfield defenders in the game. Advertisement In this year's trade market, another outfielder of interest has recently surfaced. According to MLB insider Will Kunkel, Astros' left fielder, Chas McCormick, has been drawing interest. He doesn't mention who has inquired, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume the Phillies placed a call. Both this year and last, McCormick has been hampered by a slew of injuries, keeping him off the field. As of now, he is recovering from an oblique strain. Last year, in a shortened season, McCormick hit .211 with five home runs. However, in his last full year of 2023, McCormick posted exceptional numbers. hitting for a .273/.353/.489 slash line with 19 stolen bases. And the best part is that his defense is rated as plus at all three outfield positions. He even recorded 12 outs above average in 2021. With their outfield already packed with decent options, the Astros can afford to jettison McCormick. As for the Phillies, there should be some concerns about his ability to stay healthy; however, McCormick would be a cheap addition with glowing upside. This kind of low-risk move might pay off huge for the Phillies as McCormick would bring with him a solid glove and, potentially, an impact bat. McCormick is owed $3.4 million this year and is under club control through 2026.
