Francona opts for opener against Guardians. Brent Suter will start for Reds

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds will go with an opener against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday. Left-hander Brent Suter will start the game followed by Chase Petty, the originally scheduled starter. 'Suter has some rest,' manager Terry Francona said. 'He's the natural guy for that. If he gets rolling, he could actually pitch a couple (innings). We're trying to balance winning and helping Petty.'

Francona opts for opener against Guardians. Brent Suter will start for Reds

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds will go with an opener against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday. Left-hander Brent Suter will start the game followed by Chase Petty, the originally scheduled starter. 'Suter has some rest,' manager Terry Francona said. 'He's the natural guy for that. If he gets rolling, he could actually pitch a couple (innings). We're trying to balance winning and helping Petty.' Petty, 22, has struggled in his first couple of starts, allowing 13 earned runs with eight walks and three home runs over 5 1/3 innings. Francona believes the 2021 first-round draft choice of the Twins could benefit from fewer innings and side work with pitching coach Derek Johnson. 'Having a whole week here for once, instead of just coming up here and pitching, and working on the side with DJ, that stuff all should help,' Francona said. Suter is making his second start of the season and 46th of his career. He has pitched 21 2/3 innings over 14 appearances this season. ___ AP MLB:

Another loss on miserable road trip exposes Cincinnati Reds pitching depth, hitting flaws

HOUSTON – The Cincinnati Reds just crossed the quarter mark in their season, and for all that positive run differential and upbeat vibes coming off Saturday night's 13-run one-off, they have little to show for manager Terry Francona's first seven weeks of games as manager. Even the high-performing starting pitching that led to what success they had over the first month has sprung leaks as they approach mid-May – Hunter Greene's groin injury chief among the issues with that group. Advertisement Greene's injury replacement, touted prospect Chase Petty, barely got to the fourth inning Sunday in a 6-0 loss to the Houston Astros that closed the books on a miserable 2-5 road trip that included four injured-list moves, three shutout losses and a pair of extra-inning heartbreakers. "He wasn't really commanding anything," Francona said. Chase Petty couldn't record an out in the fourth inning of his second major league start in Houston May 11. He allowed four runs on six hits and six walks in the 6-0 loss to the Astros. Even that big scoring outburst Saturday night was followed by a sweat-it-out finish as the Astros closed the final to 13-9 – followed Sunday by Astros starter Ronel Blanco retiring the first nine Reds he faced and holding the beleaguered visitors hitless until the fifth. Advertisement They didn't get another one until the eighth. Reds Pete Rose Big Red Machine 'No cliques': The untold legacy of Cincinnati's Pete Rose on the Big Red Machine and MLB Reds Astros 10-run inning Cincinnati Reds pull off 56-year first in win over Houston Astros Heck, the Reds couldn't even win a video replay challenge during the seven-game trip, going 0-for-5 on challenges and crew-chief reviews. A fan holds a sign after Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz grounded out during the seventh inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park Sunday, May 11. Mom got her way on her day. The only thing these guys could use more than their next three games against the gawdawful Chicago White Sox is the day off that comes ahead of it on Monday. 'It'll be good for these guys. They need it,' said Francona, whose team lost for the seventh time in nine games. Advertisement Forty-two games into the season, the Reds are 20-22 and only two games better than they were last year, when they swooned out of the playoff picture in May. And the starting pitching they needed to carry a disproportionate load toward their playoff expectations this season, is down to four healthy starters from the big-league depth they expected to have when the year began. Greene, the 2024 All-Star who was off to an even better start this season, is a massive absence for a team whose schedule starts to get a lot tougher in the coming weeks. He as diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain and must miss at least one more start before his first eligible return date. But Francona said Sunday there was no way to know yet whether he'd be ready by then. And Greene said over the weekend that he felt better since leaving his last start Wednesday but called the improvement 'gradual' and said he couldn't predict how quickly he'll be ready. Advertisement Meanwhile, whether Petty gets another turn after needing 90 pitches to get through three innings plus the three batters he put on base to start the fourth Sunday is a question the Reds plan to consider in the coming days. "We need to assess where our bullpen is and everything," Francona said. Petty didn't have a stress-free pitch in the start, walking six and giving up six hits along the way. "Probably fortunate he competes so well that it wasn't worse than that," Francona said. "It's just that's a ton of traffic, a lot of deep counts. When you're up around 90 in the fourth inning that's a pretty good indicator." Terry Francona's Reds enter Monday, May 12th's off day at 20-22, essentially one quarter through his first season as the team's manager. The Reds open a three-game home series with the Chicago White Sox on May 13. Reinforcements from the likes of Rhett Lowder (forearm) or Wade Miley (elbow) are at least three weeks away after both made rehab starts over the weekend. Advertisement The reason the status of that starting depth is such a big deal is because of the rest of the team. When the Reds were shut out Sunday for the seventh time in their last 38 games, it put them on pace to get shut out 27 times this season – which would eclipse the 117-year-old franchise record by three. The big-league record is 33 by the 1908 St. Louis Cardinals lineup. The shutouts at the dead-ball-era pace paints a more accurate picture of the Reds so far this season than the plus-24 run differential – which is largely a byproduct of a 24-2 victory in Baltimore last month. The only way this team is going to consistently beat good pitching is with good pitching. Advertisement Which makes Greene's status paramount. And the timelines of Lowder and Miley critical. And the development of Petty from start to start unfairly important. Maybe the only thing more important: Monday's day off.
