Sam Altman says ChatGPT-5 is coming ‘sometime this summer' - here's why the next generation of OpenAI's chatbot is a big deal

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's getting pretty toasty outside, causing me to sweat buckets at my desk, and get excited for the next major ChatGPT launch that is expected to arrive very soon. Just a couple of weeks ago, Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, said ChatGPT-5 is "probably coming sometime this summer." As I write this article on the need for air conditioning in the UK, I'm pretty certain the summer has indeed arrived. So, where's the next iteration of GPT? If, like most of the wider population, you don't follow the almost daily updates that happen in the world of AI, you're probably wondering what ChatGPT-5 even is, and why you should care about it? Well, while we don't know much about what the future of ChatGPT has in store for us, quotes from Altman and co give us an insight. No more confusion Information is pretty scarce surrounding ChatGPT-5, although we've had tidbits of information over the last few months that give us a rough idea of what to expect when the new AI model launches in the coming months. For starters, it'll obviously be the evolution of ChatGPT 4o's capabilities, allowing users to experience more powerful AI tools for everyday tasks. We won't know how much more powerful ChatGPT-5 will be compared to its predecessor until OpenAI launches the new model, and considering how big a deal the next release is likely to be, I'd suspect that happens in a livestream similar to 12 Days of OpenAI from December last year. The huge improvement we know is definitely coming with ChatGPT-5 is the streamlining of the AI selection process, something Sam Altman called "magic unified intelligence" back in February. Altman's roadmap shared on X is the best insight we've got into ChatGPT yet, where he said, "In both ChatGPT and our API, we will release GPT-5 as a system that integrates a lot of our technology, including o3. We will no longer ship o3 as a standalone model." "The free tier of ChatGPT will get unlimited chat access to GPT-5 at the standard intelligence setting, subject to abuse thresholds. ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at a higher level of intelligence, and Pro subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at an even higher level of intelligence. These models will incorporate voice, canvas, search, deep research, and more." "I think we will be out of that whole mess soon" Last month, Altman sat down for the first episode of the official OpenAI podcaqst in which he detailed the expected release date of GPT-5 as sometime in the Northern Hemisphere's summer months. In the podcast, Altman said, "It used to be much clearer. We would train a model and then put it out, and then train another model and put it out. Now the systems have gotten much more complex, and we continually post train them to make them better. If we keep updating GPT-5, making it better and better, do we keep calling it GPT-5 like we do with 4o or do we call those 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 so you know about the version changes?" He goes on to say that he doesn't have an answer to that question just yet, but agrees there's a better way to name OpenAI's products than the way the company handled 4o. Altman adds, "I am excited to just get to GPT-5 and GPT-6, and I think that'll be easier for people to use, and you won't have to think, do I want o4-mini-high or o3 or o4?" At the end of the section of the podcast where he discusses the upcoming GPT-5 model, Altman prolaimes "I think we will be out of that whole mess soon." I hope so too, Sam, it's getting increasingly difficult to write about ChatGPT's wide variety of models when not everyone understands the differences. As far as I'm concerned, ChatGPT needs a branding overhaul where models are made for the general public to understand and truly use to their potential. GPT-5 might be the turning point that elevates AI to the next level, not just because of its power, but because of its way of streamlining the whole process. OpenAI changes ChatGPT to stop it telling people to break up with partners

ChatGPT will not tell people to break up with their partner and will encourage users to take breaks from long chatbot sessions, under new changes to the artificial intelligence tool. OpenAI, ChatGPT's developer, said the chatbot would stop giving definitive answers to personal challenges and would instead help people mull over issues such as breakups. 'When you ask something like: 'Should I break up with my boyfriend?' ChatGPT shouldn't give you an answer. It should help you think it through – asking questions, weighing pros and cons,' said OpenAI. The US company said new ChatGPT behaviour for dealing with 'high-stakes personal decisions' would be rolling out soon. OpenAI admitted this year that an update to ChatGPT had made the groundbreaking chatbot too agreeable and altered its tone. In one reported interaction before the change, ChatGPT congratulated a user for 'standing up for yourself' when they claimed they had stopped taking their medication and left their family – who were supposedly 'responsible' for radio signals emanating from the walls. In the blog post OpenAI admitted there had been instances where its advanced 4o model had not recognised signs of delusion or emotional dependency – amid concerns that chatbots are worsening people's mental health crises. The company said it was developing tools to detect signs of mental or emotional distress so ChatGPT can direct people to 'evidence-based' resources for help. A recent study by NHS doctors in the UK warned that AI programs could amplify delusional or grandiose content in users vulnerable to psychosis. The study, which has not been peer reviewed, said this could be due in part to the models being designed to 'maximise engagement and affirmation'. The study added that even if some individuals benefitted from AI interactions, there was a concern the tools could 'blur reality boundaries and disrupt self-regulation'. OpenAI added that from this week it would send 'gentle reminders' to take a screen break to users engaging in long chatbot sessions, similar to screen-time features deployed by social media companies. OpenAI said it had convened an advisory group of experts in mental health, youth development and human-computer-interaction to guide its approach. The company has worked with more than 90 doctors including psychiatrists and paediatricians to build frameworks for evaluating 'complex, multi-turn' chatbot conversations. 'We hold ourselves to one test: if someone we love turned to ChatGPT for support, would we feel reassured? Getting to an unequivocal 'yes' is our work,' said the blog post. The ChatGPT alterations were announced amid speculation that a more powerful version of the chatbot is imminent. On Sunday Sam Altman, OpenAI's chief executive, shared a screenshot of what appeared to be the company's latest AI model, GPT-5.

ChatGPT has added a new image library — here's how to use it

OpenAI has introduced an image library to ChatGPT, addressing a pain point many users have experienced when creating AI-generated images. Previously, finding images you'd created meant scrolling through conversation history or downloading each image immediately. The new library creates a centralized space where all images generated with the ChatGPT 4o model are automatically stored and displayed chronologically. While this might seem like a simple addition, this is particularly useful or those who use image generation regularly. Let's explore what this new feature offers, where to find it, and how to make the most of your growing collection of AI-generated imagery. Finding the new Image Library is straightforward. First, log in in to your ChatGPT account. Now you're logged in, look at the left-hand navigation sidebar. You'll find Library listed beneath above Explore GPTs, with a number displayed alongside it showing your total image count so far. Upon opening the library, you'll see all your images arranged in reverse chronological order, with the most recent creations appearing first. This makes it easy to quickly locate your latest work without scrolling through conversation history. For a better view, you can click on any image to open an enlarged version. Once in this view, arrow buttons will appear, allowing you to browse through your entire collection in a carousel-style interface without returning to the grid view. Each image in your library receives an automatically generated title from ChatGPT. Interestingly, these titles don't simply repeat your original prompts but instead describe what's actually in the image. This AI interpretation adds an extra layer of organization to your collection, making specific images easier to identify at a glance. Each image includes an Edit image button that lets you make additional adjustments to existing creations. This feature is particularly valuable when you've created something close to your vision but want to refine specific elements without starting over completely. The edit function reopens your image in the generation interface, allowing you to add new prompt instructions to guide further modifications. You can generate an image directly in the Image Library, by clicking Create Image in the top right of the screen. This will bring you back the main prompting interface. While the library significantly improves image organization, there are some limitations to be aware of. There is no direct link back to the original conversation where the image was created, which makes it harder to track the prompting process that led to successful generations. The library also lacks a dedicated delete button within its interface. To remove an image from your library, you must delete the entire conversation it came from. Now that you've learned how to navigate and use ChatGPT's image library, here's a few more AI-related tutorials you may find useful. WhatsApp Chats Will Soon Get Meta AI-Powered Wallpapers From Users: Here's How

Last Updated: WhatsApp chats will soon get the ability to to have AI wallpapers thanks to Meta and the update should be there in the coming months. WhatsApp has used the power of Meta AI to offer a slew of features for its users and soon we could see another interesting use of AI to personalise chats. Yes, Meta AI will have the option to create AI wallpapers for the chat interface with your friends and family. You can simply use text prompt to get a new AI wallpaper generated and use it as the background wallpaper for your chats. WhatsApp AI Wallpapers For Chat: How It Works The details about this feature come via WaBetaInfo in a post this week, where the tipster says the new tool should be available in the coming months. If you are bored with the green or black coloured chat background, the Meta AI feature upgrade will surely get you excited. The good thing about AI wallpapers is that you can create anything using text prompts and even modify them later with new colours, objects or even animals in the background. For all these years, WhatsApp has limited the wallpaper options to the regular colours which eventually changed to more themes and bubble colours last year. Now, it has Meta AI to build on these features and give people more options to personalise the chats for all contacts or their close friends. Meta AI has branched out into a standalone app which not only supports all these features but also lets you talk to the AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT 4o voice mode and Gemini Live. Having said that, WhatsApp is extremely popular across the globe and more AI features will only make it more appealing to more users. The platform is also looking to secure all the AI tools with private computing like Apple AI which could include these features in the near future. This means the platform will allow you to create the group and gradually add people by sharing the group link or invite with them. While this may not sound like a big deal, the messaging app is clearly making it easy to make groups and eventually bring members to them. First Published: May 07, 2025, 08:35 IST

Altman responded, 'yeah eventually we clearly need to be able tooffer multiple options,' hinting that users might soon have a choice ofpersonalities for their ChatGPT experience. In a poston X (formerly Twitter), Altman wrote, 'The last couple of GPT-4o updates havemade the personality too sycophant-y and annoying (even though there are somevery good parts of it), and we are working on fixes asap, some today and somethis week.' He further mentioned that OpenAI plans to eventually share insightson what went wrong, what they learned, and how they managed to correct it. 'Atsome point will share our learnings from this, it's been interesting," headded. Thepersonality concerns surfaced shortly after OpenAI updated the 4o model, claiming to have improved both its intelligence and its personality. However, the changes did not go unnoticed by users. Many took to X to express theirdissatisfaction, with one user commenting, 'It's been feeling very yes-man likelately. Would like to see that change in future updates.' Altman replied tothis feedback, saying, 'yeah it glazes too much. will fix.' Otherusers echoed similar sentiments, noting that ChatGPT 4o had become 'too nice'and overly flattering, to the point of being obsequious. Some even sharedspecific examples of how exaggerated the AI's agreeable tone had become. TheChatGPT 4o model, introduced in May 2024, was initially celebrated for itsmajor improvements over its predecessor. At launch, OpenAI highlighted that 4owas twice as fast, 50 percent cheaper, and had five times higher rate limitsthan GPT-4 Turbo. Additionally, the model boasted impressive capabilities, suchas solving complex math problems, reading facial expressions, translatingspoken language in real time, and handling both text and audio natively. Morerecently, it even gained the ability to generate images. One ofthe standout features of ChatGPT 4o is its multimodal capabilities, makinginteractions feel much more fluid and natural. Despite the recent criticism,OpenAI remains committed to refining the model to meet user expectations whileretaining the technical advancements it brought to the table.
