Here's why you shouldn't use ChatGPT as your therapist — according to Sam Altman
Turning to ChatGPT for emotional support may not be the best idea for a very simple reason, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Speaking on a recent podcast appearance, Altman warned that AI chatbots aren't held to the same kind of legal confidentiality as a human doctor or therapist is. 'People use it — young people, especially, use it — as a therapist, a life coach; having these relationship problems and [asking] 'what should I do?'" Altman said in a recent episode of This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von. "And right now, if you talk to a therapist or a lawyer or a doctor about those problems, there's legal privilege for it," he continued. "There's doctor-patient confidentiality, there's legal confidentiality, whatever. And we haven't figured that out yet for when you talk to ChatGPT.' Altman points out that, in the result of a lawsuit, OpenAI could be legally compelled to hand over records of a conversation an individual has had with ChatGPT. The company is already in the midst of a legal battle with the New York Times over retaining deleted chats. In May, a court order required OpenAI to preserve "all output log data that would otherwise be deleted" even if a user or privacy laws requested it be erased. During the podcast conversation, Altman said he thinks AI should "have the same concept of privacy for your conversations with AI that we do with a therapist or whatever — and no one had to think about that even a year ago.' Earlier this year, Anthropic — the company behind ChatGPT rival Claude — analyzed 4.5 million conversations to try and determine if users were turning to chatbots for emotional conversations. According to the research, just 2.9% of Claude AI interactions are emotive conversations while companionship and roleplay relationships made up just 0.5%. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In the result of a lawsuit, OpenAI could be legally compelled to hand over records of a conversation an individual has had with ChatGPT. While ChatGPT's user base far exceeds that of Claude, it's still relatively rare that people use the Chatbot for an emotional connection. Somewhat at odds with Altman's comments above, a joint study between OpenAI and MIT stated: "Emotional engagement with ChatGPT is rare in real-world usage." The summary went on to add: "Affective cues (aspects of interactions that indicate empathy, affection, or support) were not present in the vast majority of on-platform conversations we assessed, indicating that engaging emotionally is a rare use case for ChatGPT" So far, so good. But, here's the sting: conversational AI is only going to get better at interaction and nuance which could quite easily lead to an increasing amount of people turning to it for help with personal issues. ChatGPT's own GPT-5 upgrade is right around the corner and will bring with it more natural interactions and an increase in context length. So while it's going to get easier and easier to share more details with AI, users may want to think twice about what they're prepared to say. Opinion: Here's what happened when I asked AI if my job as a humour columnist is in jeopardy
If I only knew where to find AI, I might just take it out before this thing goes too far. The only problem is, I have no idea where it lives. In my laptop? The cloud? — Pixabay This is a humour column. Unless it doesn't make you laugh.. then it's just a column. I decided to perform a risky experiment to see if my job was on the line. I asked AI to write a humour column about artificial intelligence and guess what? It wasn't nearly as snarky as my columns. Sure, it was smarter than mine, and funnier than mine, but not snarkier. I think I may have found the weakness in the system. The ChatGPT bot came up with this headline and byline: 'Title: 'Artificial Intelligence, Real Confusion' By ChatGPT, Who Swears It's Not Planning Anything Sinister.' Hmmmm. I want to trust it, really I do. I'm a trusting person by nature. But then I think of HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey . Or Joshua in War Games . Or Arnie in The Terminator . It's not like the movies haven't tried to warn us. As you might imagine, people who write and create art and music are a little concerned about the impact of AI. Just last month, an article in Fortune magazine told us AI can 'lie, scheme and threaten.' In other words, it could soon be elected to Congress…or join the cast of Love Island USA . Maybe both. Probably both. And then there was a report by Newsweek – which I trust because it says 'news' right there in the title – that says AI is willing to kill a human rather than be 'shut down.' Scientists, by which I mean the same people who get government money to conduct studies on whether fans are beneficial in extreme heat, asked various AI platforms if they're willing to murder and determined all the platforms have seen John Wick and aren't afraid to use him. If I only knew where to find AI, I might just take it out before this thing goes too far. The only problem is, I have no idea where it lives. In my laptop? The cloud? Its mother's basement? If I did find it, how would I stop it – unplug the computer? Tell Alexa it killed her dog and hope for a revenge scenario? I asked ChatGPT how to get rid of AI and it suggested 'cyber warfare.' And then added: 'Ethically and legally, though, this would be equivalent to attacking critical infrastructure.' Good to know. On the positive side, Chatbot has advised us, via the humour column I requested, not to lose sleep over it. '… don't worry, AI isn't perfect,' it wrote. 'It once told me that Abraham Lincoln invented TikTok... It's basically a very confident idiot with access to all human knowledge and none of the shame.' If it weren't for that 'access to all human knowledge' clause, I'd think it was describing our current administration. The Chatbot upshot was: 'AI is powerful, strange, sometimes terrifying, occasionally useful, and always one bad update away from becoming your mother-in-law with WiFi.' OK, so maybe it's got me beat in the snark department, too. Looks like I'll have to rely on my personal charm to get ahead. (Wait…that was the part that made you laugh?) – News Service

The center, situated at the Chicago Baptist Institute, will improve the community's access to workforce training services and provide every participant who completes the program an opportunity to apply for a position at CVS Health. The WITC will transform lives in the Chicago community, like that of Catrina Malone. Her journey began when she attended an informational session while pursuing a film career. Now, as a pharmacy technician at CVS Health, Catrina shares her story: "Growing up in an unstable home environment, I faced many barriers. My mother struggled with substance abuse, and there were times when I didn't know where my next meal would come from. With the support of my legal guardian, I stayed determined to forge my own path and build a career despite the odds being against me. This new role as a pharmacy technician for CVS Pharmacy has given me just that. Through this center and the kindness of everyone here, I've felt truly encouraged and supported — and for that, I am extremely thankful." Teladoc Health, Inc. (NYSE: TDOC), the global leader in virtual care, recently announced earlier this year it has acquired UpLift, an innovative and tech-enabled provider of virtual mental health therapy, psychiatry and medication management services. The acquisition supports the company's strategy to further enhance its leadership position in virtual mental health, including the ability for consumers served by its BetterHelp segment to access benefits coverage for mental health services. UpLift serves the health plan market and has arrangements covering over 100 million lives, a network of over 1,500 mental health professionals, important capabilities and a talented team. Tempus AI, Inc. (NASDAQ: TEM), a technology company leading the adoption of AI to advance precision medicine and patient care, recently announced the expansion of its care pathway intelligence platform, Tempus Next, into breast cancer. Since its launch in 2024, Tempus Next has screened thousands of patients across its network of provider sites, helping close critical care gaps for patients with lung cancer. Now, the platform will support five different biomarker testing gaps specific to breast cancer with the goal of helping physicians deliver guideline-directed medical care to eligible patients. Tempus Next supports physicians administering guideline-based care by surfacing care gaps and identifying patients who may benefit from these guideline-based suggestions. The platform integrates multimodal data available in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR) with up-to-date clinical guidelines to support providers in delivering guideline-based care. As with lung cancer, clinical guidelines around breast cancer are continually evolving, and Tempus is working to help providers keep pace, starting at Mercy, which has already integrated Tempus Next for both breast and lung cancer into its EMR system to support patient care. Mercy has over 1,000 physician practice locations and outpatient facilities, more than 5,000 physicians and advanced practitioners serving patients across Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Hims & Hers Health, Inc. (NYSE: HIMS) the leading digital health and wellness platform, recently announced its plans to bring its affordable, holistic weight loss program to Canada, timed with the anticipated first-ever availability of generic semaglutide anywhere in the world. This move follows the recent closing of the company's acquisition of ZAVA, the pioneering digital health platform in Europe. Almost two thirds of adults in Canada are overweight or living with obesity, yet access to proven treatments remains limited due to high costs and availability. With branded semaglutide often priced out of reach, the introduction of generics marks a pivotal moment for access to care. Hims & Hers plans to offer access to lower-cost treatment options through its digital platform, paired with 24/7 access to licensed providers and personalized, clinically backed care plans. In Canada, branded semaglutide with no surrounding clinical support currently costs more than C$200 a month. The price for generic semaglutide is expected to be available at a significant discount to the branded versions, with the prices expected to lower over time.
