Storm Team 3: Scattered storms and isolated severe storms this week
Memorial Day started out mainly dry and warm. Afternoon highs were in the upper 80s to lower 90s – before scattered showers and storms developed. A severe storm in Chatham County produced some tree damage around Port Wentworth. One other severe storm developed in Long County, but no damage was reported. However, there were reports of large hail near Ludowici. More storms are expected to develop on Tuesday afternoon and especially in the evening. There is a low-end risk for a few storms becoming strong to severe. Damaging wind gusts and hail are possible. We'll have a similar pattern on Wednesday with scattered storms with isolated severe storms. Storm chances remain elevated for Thursday and Friday. Organized severe weather is not expected at this time. Though with ample moisture and afternoon highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s, more isolated severe storms are possible. Friday will be breezy and gusty even without severe storms as a frontal boundary moves through. The weekend will be mainly dry and seasonably warm in the mid to upper 80s for afternoon high temperatures. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Baby hawk rescued from Chatham highway
PITTSBORO — Thanks to the quick thinking and teamwork of two Chatham County Sheriff's Office employees, a young hawk is safe and receiving care after a dangerous brush with traffic. CCSO Investigator Jon Murray was heading home after his shift on May 15 when something unusual caught his eye near the intersection of NC 22 and NC 42. Sitting motionless in the road was a baby hawk, vulnerable as vehicles passed close by. 'It wasn't trying to fly away,' Murray said. 'It just sat there while cars went right by it.' Realizing the bird was likely injured or too young to fly, Murray carefully secured it in a blanket and contacted the Chatham County Sheriff's Animal Resource Center for assistance. Animal Resource Officer Justin Green responded and took custody of the hawk, which appeared to have fallen from its nest. Green transported the raptor to Holly's Nest Animal Rescue, a local licensed wildlife rehabilitation center, where it will remain until it's old enough to survive on its own. 'We're grateful Jon spotted it when he did,' Green said. Holly's Nest, 309 Lazy Waters Lane north of Sanford, specializes in the care and rehabilitation of injured or orphaned wildlife and partners regularly with local agencies to ensure animals receive the help they need.

SILER CITY — A tense, nine-hour standoff in the Bear Creek community ended shortly after midnight Thursday when Chatham County Sheriff's Office deputies took a man into custody following an officer-involved shooting. Paul Lawrence Rader, 47, of the 1500 block of Lambert Chapel Road, Siler City, was charged with two counts of felony attempted first-degree murder; one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill; six counts of felony discharge of a weapon into occupied property; and one count of misdemeanor injury to real property The incident began around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, when deputies responded to a residence on Lambert Chapel Road to serve an involuntary commitment order at the request of the man's family. While deputies were speaking with family members outside the home, the man began firing indiscriminately from a travel trailer on the property, a press release states. Shortly after 4 p.m., the man began shooting directly at one of the deputies. That deputy returned fire. Over the next several hours, the man continued firing from inside the trailer, with hundreds of rounds discharged during the course of the incident. The standoff ended shortly after midnight when a second Chatham County deputy was involved in a second exchange of gunfire with the suspect. The man was shot and taken into custody, then transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for medical treatment. He was conscious and alert. No deputies or bystanders were injured. 'This was an extremely dangerous and unpredictable situation that could have ended very differently,' Sheriff Mike Roberson said. 'We're grateful this incredibly dangerous situation did not result in loss of life. Our deputies exercised courage and professionalism in the face of an unpredictable threat, and we're thankful for the support of our neighboring agencies that helped bring this to an end.' The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.
