Deep Vein Thrombosis awareness month
PEORIA, Ill (WMBD) — Dr. Surya Chaturvedula, an interventional cardiologist with Carle Health was on WMBD This Morning to talk about Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) awareness month. He explained a DVT 'is a blood clot that's formed in one of the deep veins in the body.' And while that sounds scary, clots are a normal part of the human experience, he said. 'We need to clot so that we don't bleed to death, but when blood clots happen for no good reason, that can't be good,' the doctor said. A DVT can occur in the veins that return the blood to a person's heart. The clot can then migrate, something called an embolism, and if they reach the lungs, it could be very serious, Chaturvedula said. The doctor said a DVT could affect your limbs, so pain, swelling and discoloration could be some symptoms, but then it could progress into pulmonary embolism. 'The fatal nature of pulmonary embolism is if you start experiencing Chest pain, Light headedness, Out of breath, Throbbing or cramping in arm or leg. Those would be symptoms you should seek emergency medical attention for', and all that spells 'CLOT'. Chaturvedula pointed out that an active lifestyle decreases the risks, obesity is an increase of risk, and he said that genetics also plays a roll, but 'no one is protected from it.' Carle Health cardiologist speaks about deep vein thrombosis
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — With NBA star Victor Wembanyama out for the season due to deep vein thrombosis, often shortened to DVT, a cardiologist from Carle Health shared some information about the condition. While it typically occurs in the legs, Wembanyama got it in his right shoulder. Dr. Surya Chaturvedula, a cardiologist with Carle, said a compression of the veins in the upper extremities can cause a blood clot to form, and basketball players use their arms a lot during the game. He likened a vein to a sewer pipe which returns utilized blood back into your system. A blood clot obstructs that system. He listed a few of the common symptoms. 'Swelling, pain, discoloration or redness,' he said. Victor Wembanyama expected to miss remainder of season after blood clot diagnosis, Spurs announce Risk factors include people being born with conditions prone to blood clotting, and dehydration. Immobility can also be a risk factor, whether after a long plane ride or after a surgery when people are typically bed-ridden. DVT can become more problematic if it spreads to other organs, such as the lungs. It's called pulmonary embolism and can be deadly. In terms of treatment, Chaturvedula said the two goals are preventing the clot from growing and also preventing it from migrating to other organs. Blood thinners are typically used, and if it's more extensive, thrombolytics can be used. They are commonly referred to as 'clot busters.' Chaturvedula said Carle Health is trying to spread awareness about DVT through social media campaigns and word of mouth from patients. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
