Florida football alumni Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Fred Johnson earn Super Bowl LIX rings

The Philadelphia Eagles prevailed over the Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl LIX, 40-22, inside the Superdome on Sunday night. Among those who contributed to the NFL-title-winning effort was a pair of Florida Gators alumni. Safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and offensive lineman Fred Johnson were the two members of the Orange and Blue to earn a cherished Super Bowl ring, joining a long tradition of UF players reaching the summit of NFL competition. It also marks the fourth straight year that at least one former Gator played for the winning team. Gardner-Johnson played in Gainesville from 2016 to 2018, excelling in the defensive backfield well enough to be drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round (105th overall) of the 2019 NFL draft. The Cocoa, Florida, product has played six seasons in the league, spending his first three seasons in NOLA before moving on to Philadelphia for a year. He played in just three games with the Detroit Lions last year and came back to the Eagles to earn his ring. He amassed 59 total tackles, 12 pass breakups, six interceptions — including one returned for a touchdown — and a forced fumble during the 2024-25 campaign. The UF alumnus made three tackles (one solo) in the winning effort on Sunday night. The other Johnson manned Florida's offensive line from 2015 to 2018 before signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent but was released and then picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals. The Royal Palm Beach, Florida, product has also spent six seasons in the NFL, starting with three with the Bengals, followed by a year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then two with his current squad. Fred served mostly as a backup during his Philly stint stretching across 35 appearances, but did start six games earlier this season.
