A man is dead after an incident on the Squamish River Friday afternoon, according to local police.
Paramedics and search and rescue crews were called to the confluence of the Squamish and Cheakamus rivers west of Squamish airport around 1:45 p.m. for a report that a man had been located unresponsive, Squamish RCMP said in a news release.
Responders attempted life-saving measures, but the man did not survive.
'Based on the information received, two individuals were operating personal watercrafts on the river when they became separated,' the RCMP release reads.
The surviving rider found the man unresponsive, with his personal floatation device keeping him afloat, police said.
Mounties said they'll be working with the B.C. Coroners Service to determine the circumstances of the death, but 'initial information' leads them to believe the death was 'a medical event' and not a result of foul play.
