No ordinary delivery: Sixty60 driver escapes dramatic shootout

A Checkers Sixty60 driver was spotted casually driving through a dramatic high-speed police chase and shootout with a criminal in a video that has gone viral. The incident took place in Muizenberg on Monday, 7 July. It comes months after another delivery driver was captured gatecrashing a wedding video in Cape Town's city centre. According to the Crime in SA X account, a high-speed car chase between police and a suspect wanted for robbery took place on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred in Muizenberg at the Sanderling Circle and Baden Powell, where police intercepted a speeding Volkswagen Polo. During the video, police shot at and kicked down the door of the vehicle, pulling out the man behind the wheel. Eagled-eyed X users were amused to spot a Checkers Sixty60 delivery driver in the background, likely en route to their destination. @ZoeMlisana posted: 'Drove through a car chase and shootout to make sure that milk is delivered within 60 minutes'. Another, @10_Amo16, jokingly added: 'They have 60 lives'. According to the Shoprite Group, Checkers Sixty60 has a service guarantee in place to deliver 'no matter the weather.' The group's Chief Strategy Officer, Neil Schreuder, said in a statement: ' In South Africa, this can be tricky at times given load shedding-related traffic congestion, rainy weather, and other challenges faced by drivers on the roads.' According to BusinessTech , Checkers Sixty60 drivers are independent contractors who own motorbikes and purchase their uniforms. Checkers Sixty60 drivers are mandated to deliver your orders within 60 minutes. Additionally, customers will receive free delivery if an order arrives more than 30 minutes after the estimated time of arrival and if the order contains less than 80% of a customer's first-choice products. Lowveld training centre gears up bikers for safer rides

The Lowveld is known for its scenic motorbike routes, particularly in the Sabie area and along the Long Tom Pass – a road that has proven deadly for some reckless bikers. Since its establishment in 2023, Lowveld Motorcycle Training CC has focused on equipping bikers with the skills needed to ride safely and remain aware of their surroundings. ALSO READ: Sabie Classic tests mountain bikers' mettle The organisation's two founders, Johan du Plessis and Francois Niehof, launched the training centre with a mission to reduce the number of devastating motorcycle accidents in and around the Lowveld. 'You can get a bike learner's permit at the age of 16 and ride a bike with a 125CC engine without ever doing a riding test, which is not safe at all,' Du Plessis said. Learners can ride for a full year on this permit – a major contributing factor to bike accidents in South Africa. 'To ride a motorbike you need to possess certain skills, like good balance and hand-eye co-ordination. If you don't have these skills you shouldn't be riding,' he explained. Among other things, they teach bikers basic safety principles, such as wearing proper protective clothing and using suitable equipment. 'We dress for the slide, not the ride,' Du Plessis added. Other training areas they focus on are carrying a passenger, riding in a group, and how to safely execute an emergency brake or turn. Du Plessis also believes in teaching road awareness from a young age. 'Look twice for bikes,' he tells schoolchildren, aiming to instil safe habits early. The team has delivered voluntary talks at schools such as Hoërskool Bergvlam and Lowveld High to educate students about bike safety. ALSO READ: Unlucky incident unveils hidden quad bike in Mbombela, possibly stolen They recently provided training for 78 Checkers Sixty60 drivers from Mbombela, Hazyview and White River. The focus was on teaching safe riding techniques and testing to ensure they are fit to ride. Checkers has confirmed that since starting the training in May 2025, there have been no accidents involving their riders. Another Sixty60 driver dies in horrific head-on collision

A Checkers Sixty60 driver has tragically died after a head-on collision with a police van in Cape Town. The accident marks the third recorded fatality this year from the delivery service, known for operating in any and all circumstances, within a one-hour timeframe. According to the supermarket chain, drivers are outsourced to independent contractors who purchase their own motorcycles and uniforms. In videos circulating on social media, a police van reportedly collided with a Checkers Sixty60 motorcycle, where a driver was fatally injured. In the clip, the delivery driver was seen wedged under the front tyres of the double-cab vehicle. The accident occurred on Voortrekker Road in Bellville on Monday 23, June. Police have confirmed that the incident is under investigation. No other details of the incident have been made public. This week's accident marks the third fatality of a Checkers Sixty60 driver this year. In January, a driver died in a head-on collision with two vehicles in Camps Bay, Cape Town. In May, another was tragically killed by a drunken driver in Bela Bela. Later that month, two Sixty60 drivers collided, as seen in CCTV footage at an unknown location. Earlier this month, a Sixty60 driver was captured on CCTV footage colliding with a car after speeding through an intersection in Durba. A few days later, another driver was found unconscious at an accident scene in Heiderand, Mossel Bay. This week another viral video revealed another Sixty60 motorcycle crash, which occured during rainy weather conditions, reportedly in the Western Cape. According to the Shoprite Group, Checkers Sixty60 has a service guarantee in place to deliver 'no matter the weather.' The group's Chief Strategy Officer, Neil Schreuder, said in a statement: ' In South Africa, this can be tricky at times given load shedding-related traffic congestion, rainy weather, and other challenges faced by drivers on the roads.' Will Springboks don unpopular Pick n Pay kit for 2025 test series?

The Springboks test series is just days away from kicking off. But will the thrice-winning World Champions be wearing new jerseys, courtesy of sponsors Pick n Pay? In recent weeks, the yellow and green training kits have been a hard pass for many rugby fans. Like the aqua-jade 'Checkers Sixty60' alternative kit, which was introduced during the 2023 World Cup, supporters have voiced their disapproval of the design. In March, the Blitzboks debuted their new look, which featured the retailer's large logo on the back. On social media, many South Africans, including rugby experts, have given the Springboks 'Pick n Pay kit' a thumbs down. The national rugby team were seen wearing the yellow and green jerseys as part of their training kits following two alignment camps in Cape Town this year. Speaking to The South African, SA Rugby's Commercial General Manager Andy Colquhoun confirmed that Springboks replica jerseys and training kits would go on sale this week, ahead of the test series season. The jerseys would not feature the Pick n Pay logo, as was anticipated, as the signing of the new sponsor was too late to incorporate into production. Images of new jerseys – different from last year's – would be released on Tuesday, 24 June, and would go on sale the next day. Replica jerseys featuring Pick n Pay's logo will be released to the public in 2026. Earlier this year, SA Rugby announced that Pick n Pay had signed a four-year contract as a Tier 1 sponsor. The sponsor's logo is featured on all Springboks match-day jerseys and on the front of all training apparel. The retailer replaces MTN, which previously sponsored the Boks from 2017 up until last year. The brand's name will feature on the back of the jersey in gold above the position number and player name. According to reports, the significant move will cost the supermarket group around R70 million per year. In March, the Blitzboks sported the new kit for their game against Uruguay. The Springboks will play a friendly against the Barbarians at Cape Town's DHL Stadium on Saturday, 28 June. Home games include the following dates… Castle Lager Incoming Series 5 July: South Africa vs Italy, Loftus Versfeld (Pretoria) 12 July: South Africa vs Italy, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (Gqeberha) 19 July: South Africa vs Georgia, Mbombela Stadium (Nelspruit) Castle Lager Rugby Championship 16 August: South Africa vs Australia, Emirates Airline Park (Johannesburg) 23 August: South Africa vs Australia, DHL Stadium (Cape Town) 27 September: South Africa vs Argentina, Hollywoodbets Kings Park (Durban) The Springboks will also play these away games. 6 September: South Africa vs New Zealand, Auckland (Eden Park) 13 September: South Africa vs New Zealand, Wellington (Sky Stadium) 4 October: South Africa vs Argentina, London (Twickenham) 8 November: South Africa vs France, Paris (Stade de France) 15 November: South Africa vs Italy, Turin (Allianz Stadium) 22 November: South Africa vs Ireland, Dublin (Aviva Stadium) 29 November: South Africa vs Wales, Cardiff (Principality Stadium) Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Trolley madness: Noordskool learners race in style

POLOKWANE – Laerskool Pietersburg Noord (Noordskool) on Friday hosted a vibrant annual trolley race, with all grades joining in themed teams for laps of fun and school spirit. Principal Greg Schoeman was the programme director who kept record of time in each round, and the race started with the Gr 7 learners so that they could be able to assist the younger learners. Learners were dressed in fun and funky colourful costumes according to their respective themes including clowns, minions, beach party, Checkers Sixty60 and other funky themes. In between the races, the Gr 7 prefects entertained the crowd of supporters, parents and learners, with their dance routines, as they cheered for their favourite teams. Gr 1 to Gr 7 learners were armed with shopping trolleys, ready to take on the obstacles that were set up with barriers on the school grounds, while singing to music in the background.
