McDonald's launches their biggest burger yet with pickle-based sauce - we tried it, here's our verdict

Stop what you're doing. It's official, McDonald's has announced a brand new burger - the Big Arch - and we were one of the very first in the world to try it. Intrigued? Yep we thought so. Coming to all McDonald's restaurants in the UK and Ireland later this month is the Big Arch a beef burger that features the brand's new Big Arch sauce. The new Big Arch sauce contains a mixture of ketchup, mustard and pickle juice, it's rich and delicious, with a peppery kick. The sauce goes on both the top and bottom base of the burger buns, before the base is topped with new and improved crispy onions, while the top half has lettuce, fresh onions and pickles. Then comes a slice of white cheddar cheese on each side, two patties of 100 per cent British and Irish beef and then a third slice of cheese is inserted between the patties. Yes that's right three slices of cheese. The burger is said to be McDonald's "most loaded bite" the brand has ever served. Thomas O'Neill, Head of Menu at McDonald's in the UK and Ireland, said of the new menu addition: 'A new iconic burger needs an equally iconic sauce, and we've taken it up a notch with the Big Arch. This isn't just about size, it's about flavour. With double layers of beef, crispy onions, and the hero of the build, our signature sauce, every bite is crafted to hit the spot to satisfy serious McDonald's hunger. Big, bold, and packed with serious deliciousness.' So what did we think of the burger? It was a great flavour combination of the sweet tangy sauce, the creamy Cheddar, succulent patties and the crispy onions which seriously hit the spot. As someone who doesn't usually like pickles, the sauce surprisingly didn't put me off and worked well in combination with the other flavours of mustard and ketchup. However, from a practical point of view, well let's just say you should not wear a white skirt like I did as the burger is a very mess eat. It's designed to be so big you need to use both hands to eat it properly, which in theory in fine, but in practice made things a little tricky. Would we order it again? Sure, if we were really, really hungry, but day to day we'll stick to our signature nuggets and fries order. The new burger launches in restaurants from 18 June and is £7.99 on its own or £9.99 in a medium meal with fries and a drink. Lekker Brekker Monday: A chunky, cheesy breakfast bowl

This autumnal hug of a breakfast bowl is topped with cheese and a bobotie-style egg custard topping. I'm not a fan of the bowl food phenomenon that sprang up a few years ago. It's the food that matters, not the vessel it's carried in. My best illustration of this was the morning I was in a queue at a trendy deli counter at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The woman in front of me, who looked like she had not eaten in three months, sort of half-draped herself over the counter and said to the man, 'I'd like a bowl please.' 'Certainly, ma'am,' he shot back. 'And would you like anything in it?' But even my own rules are meant to be broken. For this recipe, you put it all in one bowl and soon have a quick and filling breakfast produced with not much fuss at all. In this case, an oven-proof dish is filled with bacon, pork sausages, caramelised onion and Cheddar cheese, and flavoured with oregano. The onions are spooned into the greased bases of two oven dishes, each suitable for one very generous portion. The pork sausages are fried and then sliced into big chunks. The bacon rashers are cooked, and everything is layered into the dishes. Grated cheese is scattered over. Finally, eggs are beaten with milk and poured over everything. Once baked, your breakfast is ready. Tony's chunky, cheesy breakfast bowl (Serves 2) Ingredients 1 large onion 4 quality pork sausages 6 rashers back bacon Fresh oregano (or thyme) 200 g Cheddar cheese, grated 2 jumbo eggs 250 ml (1 cup) full cream milk Pinch of salt Ground pepper Method Slice the onion into rounds and caramelise in butter and olive oil. Fry the sausages gently till golden brown and cooked through. Cut each into three or four chunks. Fry the bacon the way you like it. Slice into pieces. Grease or spray two oven-proof bowls. Layer the caramelised onions at the bottom, then the bacon, and sprinkle with picked oregano leaves. Be careful to share each item equally between the two bowls. Next add sausage chunks and grated cheese. Season with salt and pepper. Beat the eggs and milk together with a little salt and ground black pepper. Pour over the contents of the bowl evenly. Bake in a 200℃ oven for about 30 to 40 minutes or until cooked to the middle. Switch it up by adding chopped garlic to the onions, and a finely chopped chilli. Replace a third of the milk with cream for a richer result. DM

Lekker Brekker Monday: An easy, cheesy, breezy scramble

This breakfast wasn't planned. But when the dish I had made for breakfast on Sunday turned out, let's say, less well than expected, I quickly scrambled for something else to replace it. Things don't always work out according to plan. And I don't mind owning up to it when it happens. Which is not often. About 99% of my recipes, as thought out and written, and then executed, turn out well. This means that you know that if I write and publish a recipe, it has been tested and turned out as intended. When it doesn't go well, you usually don't hear about it. This one – built around eggs, chiefly – did go well. But when I got up on Sunday morning and made coffee, I then set about making the breakfast I had planned the day before. What was this sedentary Sunday-morning repast, you may ask? Peppermint Crisp muffins. That's what. Here's what went wrong: I miscalculated how much chocolate there is in a standard 49g bar of Peppermint Crisp. And I used six of them. On reflection, there must have been a fair weight of chocolate in there – enough to weigh it down and throw the batter out of balance. This means that I can now recalculate it and hope that they come out next time. But what happened on Sunday was that the chocolate in the mixture gathered together and melted, forming a rich, oozy pool of chocolatey deliciousness in the middle of the 'muffins'. Yes, you see where I'm going. These were virtually chocolate fondants. The muffins collapsed. We had a couple of them as breakfast dessert. Yummy. So good. But I could not in all conscience pass them off to you as the muffins they had been intended to be. Defeated (for now), I cast around the room. There were five eggs in the egg basket on top of the fridge. (Yes, we keep our eggs in a wire egg basket, which we keep on top of the fridge.) There was an onion. There was Cheddar cheese. And there was butter. (Obviously – there's always butter in my household. I look for special offers and buy it in bulk. Butter freezes perfectly. We do that with bacon special offers too. Butter + bacon = living.) But here's the thing. The balance here is tilted towards the cheese, not the eggs. I used two cups of Cheddar (when grated) and only five eggs. Because that's how many eggs I had. And the onion plays an important role too: it needs to be caramelised, golden and sweet. Like a Sunday morning. Tony's easy, cheesy eggs, cheese and onion scramble (Serves 2) Ingredients 3 Tbsp butter, and then 3 more (you'll see), and then more again for the toast 1 onion, peeled, sliced in half and sliced thinly 5 eggs 2 cups grated Cheddar cheese 4 slices of bread, toasted and buttered Salt and black pepper 2 chives Method Slice the onion, grate the cheese and have the eggs and butter to hand. Toast the bread and butter it. Melt 3 Tbsp butter in a pan and add the sliced onions. Sauté, stirring now and then, until golden brown and smelling sweetly enticing. Add the 3 extra Tbsp butter, let it melt, then add the eggs, while moving the mixture around with a spatula, and then immediately add the cheddar, stirring until it has melted and everything has combined. Move the mixture around until it is cooked but still moist. Spoon the scramble onto the buttered toast. Season with salt and pepper. Top with chopped chives. Cheese powder is a versatile ingredient used extensively in snacks like popcorn, chips, and crackers, as well as in instant meals and seasoning blends. With the shift towards organic and natural ingredient products, there is a growing industry focus to cater to health-conscious consumers. Did Apple's Siri eavesdrop on your call? Find out if eligible for part of $95M settlement

Did Apple's Siri eavesdrop on your call? Find out if eligible for part of $95M settlement The initial lawsuit was filed on March 17, 2021, in a California federal court. Show Caption Hide Caption Apple may incorporate A.I. in search engines Apple might begin incorporating A.I. into search engines. Cheddar Anyone who's owned an Apple device since 2014 may be eligible to receive part of a $95 million class action lawsuit, which accused the tech company's famous voice assistant of spying on users. The lawsuit, Lopez v. Apple, was filed in a California federal court in 2021 by users who allege their private conversations were being recorded by their Apple devices after unintentionally activating Siri. Although a settlement has been reached, Apple has denied the allegations made in the complaint, according to the legal notice obtained by USA TODAY. "If you owned or purchased a Siri-enabled device and experienced an unintended Siri activation during a confidential or private communication between Sept. 17, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2024, you should read this Notice as it may impact your legal rights," the legal notice states. According to the legal notice, iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, iMacs, HomePods, iPod touches, and Apple TVs are Siri-enabled devices. The lawsuit's FAQ page says a court hearing to approve the settlement is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 1. If the settlement amount is approved, those who claimed devices will be sent their part. What does the lawsuit allege? The lawsuit alleges that people's "confidential or private communications were allegedly obtained by Apple and/or shared with third parties as a result of an unintended Siri activation." Siri, a voice assistant activated by saying "Hey, Siri," can set reminders, control smart home devices and make recommendations. However, users in the class action lawsuit claim their Apple devices were recording them without their consent and subsequently sending their information to advertisers who used it to target them with online ads. Users claimed they saw ads on their phones for specific brands after discussing them aloud, and others said their devices listened to them without them having said anything at all. The initial lawsuit, filed on March 17, 2021, cites a 2019 article from The Guardian that found Apple's third-party contractors regularly heard confidential information. At the time, Apple said only a small portion of data was shared to help improve Siri and dictation. USA TODAY contacted Apple on May 11 but has not received a response. Am I eligible for part of Lopez v. Apple settlement? The eligibility requirements are broad but are open to anyone who has owned or purchased a Siri-enabled device between Sept. 17, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2024. To opt in, you will swear under oath that you experienced an unintended Siri activation while having a private conversation. What devices qualify under the lawsuit? The following are the Siri-enabled devices included: iPhones iPads Apple Watches MacBooks iMacs Apple TV streaming boxes HomePod speakers iPod Touches How to submit claim for portion of Lopez v. Apple settlement The Lopez Voice Assistant Settlement website allows Apple customers to claim a portion of the settlement. Some users received an email or postcard with a claim identification code and confirmation code that can be used to make the claim. If not, you can still submit a claim online. When is the deadline to submit a claim? The deadline to submit a claim is July 2, 2025. How much money will I get from Lopez v. Apple settlement? Payments for each device are capped at $20.00, but claimants may receive less depending on the total number of claims submitted. How many devices can I claim? Each individual can claim payments for up to five devices, so the maximum payout for each person is $100. When will payments be sent? It is unclear when payments will be sent out, but more clarification is expected after the final settlement hearing, tentatively set for Aug. 1. If approved, and if there are no appeals, payments will be processed as soon as possible, according to the website. Claimants can check the website for further updates.
