The conflicts that shape us

One of the pleasures of editing this magazine is the chance to read the letters. The wit, wisdom and – how should I put this? – advice I receive each week is mighty, and appreciated. It is genuinely helpful to know what New Statesman readers are thinking: what they like in each issue and what they are less keen on. It is, for example, particularly revealing that Jonathan Sumption's essay on Gaza continues to provoke impassioned debate on both sides. The ongoing crisis in Gaza – and the British government's response – is clearly something we must continue to focus on. This week, our international editor, Megan Gibson, digs into the authoritarian instincts of the government's decision to classify the campaign group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation. It is a disconcerting read. There is plenty of humour in the letters inbox, too. This week, I especially enjoyed Michael Henderson's note hailing the delights of Italian culture following Finn McRedmond's dispatch from Chianti last week. 'It is indeed a magnificent culture,' Michael wrote, before adding a delightfully controversial 'but' – there is always a but. When it comes to 'ale vs Sangiovese', as Michael put it, 'the English win every time'. By publishing these words, I fear I may have sparked a diplomatic incident. A letter of protest from the Italian ambassador is no doubt already winging its way to us. If so, perhaps I should provoke further – can we agree Cheddar is superior to Parmesan, and nicer on pasta? That cheese with fish is fine? And Marmite, of course, is king of all European condiments? I shall now assume the brace position under my desk. Beyond such culinary disputes, readers have also urged a greater focus on class as the driving force of British politics. I agree, and hope in the coming weeks we will be able to do more on this subject. The very question of what constitutes the 'working class' today is a fascinating topic. I remember visiting Ohio in an attempt to understand why working-class auto workers were abandoning the Democratic Party for Donald Trump. Yet, when I visited their homes, I found many had often already retired with good pensions and no mortgage. Some even spent winters in their second homes in Florida. The very poor in the cities I visited were often African American, did not own their homes and were still voting Democrat. The story, as ever, was complicated. I wonder whether it is fair to assume the university-educated children of middle England inherit their parents' class, even if they do not own assets, cannot conceive of ever doing so and, as Marx might have put it, sell their labour for increasingly poor wages. Are they middle class or part of a new working class? One thing is clear: the lure of a new left-wing party under Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana is strong for this cohort, who should not be ignored – a point made by Jason Cowley in his Diary. The main subject of this week's magazine, however, is the growing sense of unease in the country as we head into the depths of summer. As George Eaton writes, there is now real concern in Westminster at the continuing strike action over NHS pay, mounting fiscal pressure on the government and the spreading protests over so-called asylum hotels. I said when I became editor that I wanted the New Statesman to cover difficult topics like these with old-fashioned reportage – doing the hard work of travelling the country and talking to people. That is exactly what Anoosh Chakelian has done this week, visiting Diss in Norfolk and Epping in Essex to understand what is happening and why. As ever, her reporting is first-rate: thoughtful, compassionate and illuminating. I urge you to read it. Sitting alongside this is another piece of excellent writing from our new culture editor, Tanjil Rashid, who argues that the government must be prepared to have difficult conversations if resolution and integration are to be reached. Elsewhere, Will Lloyd meets a man still searching for justice after the Battle of Orgreave, Freddie Hayward details the continuing radicalisation of the Maga movement in Washington and Will Dunn offers a painfully funny – and at times just plain painful – account of King-Emperor Donald Trump's bizarre visit to Scotland. I hope you enjoy it. If you don't, the Correspondence page is all yours. Oh, and here's one for Finn: a pint of Theakston's beats a pint of Guinness. And now I'm back under my desk. Costco Fans Say This Kirkland Product Is Their 'Holy Grail'

It's a deli MVP. Costco remains one of our favorite grocery stores, thanks to its bulk options and affordable prices, and of course, the free samples. With tasty prepared meals and that signature rotisserie chicken, there are so many items that keep shoppers coming back. The bakery is home to viral cakes and treats that are perfect for hosting. You can also find a ton of snacks such as chocolate-drizzled popcorn and pickle-flavored potato chips. And don't get us started on the food court, which is home to classics like freshly baked pizzas or that iconic hot dog combo. Costco members don't hold back on their opinions, especially on Reddit. In a recent thread, shoppers discussed their must-buy products from the warehouse, and one surprising product came out on top. Costco's Kirkland Signature Coastal Cheddar Cheese Last week, Redditor @valhalla_la asked the Costco subreddit, "What is your holy grail Costco item?" And dozens of Redditors gushed about one specific deli find: Kirkland Signature Coastal Cheddar Cheese. It's not your average Cheddar, though. The Kirkland Signature product is an English Cheddar, and if you're wondering what makes this cheese special, it's all in the aging and texture. Each block is aged for up to 15 months, allowing the flavor to intensify over time. The cheese also has a unique texture due to calcium lactate crystals, which develop during the aging process. One Redditor described it as a cross between Cheddar and Parmesan, with another fan adding, "Love the little crunchies in it." The thread continued with so much cheesy hype. One shopper raved about their love of the Cheddar, saying, "I am obsessed with the Kirkland Coastal Cheddar and have replaced all other cheeses in my life." Another fan mentioned their dismay over the cheese being out of stock, sharing, "My Costco hasn't had the Coastal Cheddar in over a year. It's been devastating for my family." Next time you make a Costco trip, grab a block to use in your favorite cheesy recipes. Whether you grate it or crumble it, this Cheddar lends itself beautifully to a variety of uses. Use it to put together a stunning charcuterie board. Or add it to a comforting pot of macaroni and cheese or a classic grilled cheese. No matter how you use it, this cheesy buy is sure to become a favorite. Read the original article on ALLRECIPES Solve the daily Crossword

Chef shares simple tip to make the perfect omelettes at home

Omelettes are the perfect quick and easy meal for breakfast - they can be whipped up in a matter of minutes, and are simply delicious. A nutritious meal, they're rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, making them a healthy choice. Now, one chef has shared an easy method to make your omelettes even more delicious. Ellis Barrie has revealed how to cook an omelette in minutes and it's what you add to it that will make the biggest difference. There are two foods which Barrie suggests adding to this breakfast meal for added flavour. Barrie says the key to a good omelette is adding spinach and cheese to the recipe, Express reports. To make this healthy breakfast, you should: Start by melting a knob of butter in a frying pan placed over a medium heat. Next, you should add the spinach and cook for a minute or two. After this, you should season with salt and pepper and then tip out onto a plate. After this, beat the eggs in a bowl until mixed and return them to the frying pan. Add the remaining butter and melt until it turns foamy. With the beaten eggs, tilt the pan to distribute the eggs evenly and leave for 20 seconds. You'll then need to use a spatula or a wooden spoon to draw in the sides of the eggs to the centre, and incorporate butter. Then, gently shake the pan to redistribute the egg to the edges. For flavour, sprinkle over cheese and spinach while the egg is still runny in the middle. Take the pan off the heat and let the egg continue to cook in the warmth of the pan. Finally, season with salt and pepper, says BBC Food. There's a huge range of toppings you can add to your omelette. Cheese is one of the most common additions but if you're wondering which type of cheese is best, Eating Well has shared what you should look out for. It says: 'There's nothing wrong with choosing classic grated Cheddar to complement some crispy bacon or well-seared breakfast sausage, but a softer cheese, like chèvre or a herby Boursin, amplifies the gooey factor and leaves you with creamy bite after creamy bite. 'Softer cheeses, stirred together with your proteins and cooked veggies, also help with ingredient integration, assuring that every bite has a little bit of everything.' By following this simple recipe, you can create a delicious healthy breakfast to start your day off with a nutritious meal.
