Hot spot for fresh cockles and clams will be shutting down end-Jun
In a recent Facebook post, WaWa Lala shared that their Margaret Drive outlet closes on 26 Jun. The store has been serving lala, or clams, since its opening on 15 Aug 2023.
WaWa Lala's official post cites high rental and a fall in customer numbers as the main reasons for closing. They state that Singapore's F&B industry is fraught with 'battle(s) with manpower shortages, tight margins, and increasing overheads' that result in low to no profit.
Though they celebrated their 5-year anniversary on 18 Jan, WaWa Lala understands that passion alone isn't enough to survive in a cutthroat industry.
Founded by Chef Kiang who has 30 years of culinary experience, WaWa Lala's live cockles and clams are the basis of its dishes. With generous amounts of these lala atop noodles, rice or simply on their own, these bowls are worth the price.
By making lala the focus of the dish, WaWa Lala has come up with several signature dishes that keep customers coming back. These include the Authentic Clam Noodles With Chinese Wine (S$10.50) and the Power Clams With Tasty Rice (S$12.50).
From light broths to thick, spicy sauces, the natural sweetness of clam meat is highlighted. It's a pity that these dishes won't be as accessible after this week, especially for Westies.
However, all's not lost just yet. Though their Margaret Market outlet closes this Jun, WaWa Lala retains their first outlet at Fortune Centre. So if you're in the mood for lala, why not make the trip down to enjoy these fresh and umami-rich clams?
