Four trapped by high tide near viewpoint at Point Defiance Park. Rescue underway

A technical rescue is underway after four people were trapped by high tide near a viewpoint along Five Mile Drive at Point Defiance Park. 'Some folks were caught on the beach when the tide came in, and it's sounding like they've climbed to safety. They're just stuck there now,' Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The News Tribune. The fire department received a call at 4:36 p.m. and sent both ground crews and a fire boat to the area. The four people were near Dalco Passage Viewpoint and walking on the beach below the cliffs when they were trapped by the high tide, Shepherd told The News Tribune. 'The tide comes in pretty fast, and it comes all the way up to the cliff,' she said. Shepherd said that a technical rescue can take hours and involve ropes, pulleys and other assists. The boat is assisting from the water side and ground crews on Five Mile Drive might either rappel down the cliff or assist with pulling the four people up, she said. The rescue is ongoing. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

A family is displaced after their attic catches fire in Tacoma

A fire displaced one family in the 1300 block of East Fairbanks Street in Tacoma late Tuesday afternoon, fire officials say. The Tacoma Fire Department received a call at 3:49 p.m. about gray smoke and flames that appeared from the backside of a residence, spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The News Tribune. 'Everyone got out OK, fortunately,' she said. Crews also rescued a cat from the house. The fire looks like it started outside and then moved into the attic. Crews got the fire under control at 4:02 p.m., Shepherd said. The cause of the fire is unknown. An investigator is on scene, she told The News Tribune at about 4:40 p.m. The Fire Department reached out to the Red Cross to assist the family that was displaced, Shepherd said.

Fircrest apartment ‘a total loss' after kitchen fire leaves roof charred

An apartment fire broke out late Friday afternoon in Fircrest, leaving one unit 'a total loss' and displacing at least three residents, according to Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd. No one was home in the unit where the fire began, on one end of a single-story apartment building in the 1400 block of Rainier Court, she told The News Tribune via phone Friday evening. Three of four units in the building were damaged. 'The unit where it started is just a total loss,' Shepherd said. 'It was pretty burned up.' There were three people who lived in that end unit. The Tacoma Fire Department reached out to the Red Cross to support them while they are displaced, according to Shepherd. She said the Fire Department believes the fire started in the kitchen. A call came into 911 about a kitchen appliance on fire at 4:01 p.m. Friday, but firefighters haven't independently confirmed what the cause of the fire was yet, she said. The fire spread through the roof to the next unit, causing 'severe roof damage' to the neighbors' place and requiring those residents to also move at least temporarily, according to Shepherd. Crews hadn't made contact with those residents as of Friday evening, and she didn't have information on how many lived in the adjacent unit, she told The News Tribune. A third unit might also be damaged by smoke or water, but the type and extent of damage is unclear, Shepherd said.

Tacoma man found dead from fire at indoor shooting range IDed. Cause of fire undetermined

A Tacoma man who died after a fire broke out at an indoor shooting range last week has been identified, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office. Timothy Mar, 33, died from the fire at Bull's Eye Indoor Range in the 400 block of Puyallup Avenue. His cause and manner of death are pending, the office said in a news release. That is a temporary designation used when additional investigation, information and/or test results are required for certification. The official cause of the fire has been ruled as undetermined but is considered accidental, Tacoma Fire spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The News Tribune on Monday. Shepherd said investigators were not able to determine if the fire was ignited by a failed power cable or something else. Firefighters were dispatched that day at about 6:16 p.m. after reports that the building was on fire and people were inside, according to Tacoma Fire in an X post. After firefighters knocked the fire down, Mar was found dead inside. One other person was injured. The injured person was taken to a local hospital, the post said. 'The fire appears to have started in a classroom area where the business kept live ammo and electrical equipment. While the exact cause of the fire is unclear, the fire appears to be unintentional,' Tacoma Fire posted on X. Bull's Eye Indoor Range has been temporarily closed. According to its Facebook post on Monday, the shooting range will begin releasing firearms and running background checks again through appointments.
