SA makes history: First-ever green hydrogen qualifications approved
The development of these qualifications stems directly from CHIETA's Vision 2025, which was launched in 2021 and identified green hydrogen as a strategic focus area to drive South Africa's energy transition. Vision 2025 recognised the transformative potential of green hydrogen in powering inclusive industrial growth, supporting decarbonisation, and promoting sustainability. These programmes are the first of their kind in the country, developed to equip learners with critical technical and operational skills needed in the green hydrogen value chain from production and storage to transportation and technology innovation. On 30 April 2025, the QCTO formally approved three new National Qualifications Framework (NQF): Level 4 programmes: The Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) is proud to announce the approval of South Africa's first-ever green hydrogen skills programmes by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). This marks a major leap forward in building the country's capacity for a sustainable and inclusive energy future. CEO of CHIETA, Yershen Pillay said the green hydrogen economy is not a distant dream, it is unfolding now 'Vision 2025 marked a turning point for CHIETA as we committed to leading skills development for the emerging green economy. This wasn't just about creating Qualifications, it was about future-proofing our workforce and ensuring no one is left behind in the energy transition,' said CHIETA CEO, Yershen Pillay. Following the strategic direction outlined in Vision 2025, CHIETA initiated the development of these programmes in close collaboration with industry leaders, training providers, technical experts, and government stakeholders. The result: three nationally recognised qualifications designed to meet the real demands of a fast-evolving green hydrogen sector. Why Green Hydrogen? Why Now? Green hydrogen produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy has emerged globally as a game-changing clean energy source. In South Africa, it is seen as a catalyst for industrial growth, export potential, and decarbonisation. South Africa's rich renewable energy resources and strong chemical industry base place it in a unique position to lead the continent's green hydrogen revolution. However, without the right skills in place, this opportunity could be lost. 'These programmes ensure we don't just talk about a just energy transition, we deliver it. We're building the technical pipeline needed to support a green economy, while opening up career opportunities for youth, artisans, and operators across multiple industries,' said Pillay. The three QCTO-approved qualifications will prepare learners for a range of roles in green hydrogen production, storage, transport, and technology. Learners will be equipped to: Operate and maintain hydrogen production and storage equipment Coordinate technical activities and logistics Monitor environmental impacts and performance of hydrogen technologies Understand safety, regulatory, and industry standards Graduates will be ready for roles such as operators, artisans, maintenance technicians, and logistics professional across energy, transport, manufacturing, and chemical sectors. With QCTO approval secured, Skills Development Providers (SDPs) can now apply for programme accreditation. Once accredited, SDPs can begin offering the programmes, with CHIETA providing strategic guidance and support. CHIETA is also embarking on a national awareness campaign to promote uptake, build training infrastructure, and ensure access across provinces. The goal: create a strong, inclusive workforce ready to support South Africa's green hydrogen ambitions. The green hydrogen economy is not a distant dream it is unfolding now. These CHIETA-led programmes represent a decisive step toward a cleaner, more equitable energy future, rooted in skills development, sector transformation, and national progress.

SIU launches investigation into fraud and corruption at Chieta

Image: Supplied The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is set to launch a probe into fraud, corruption, irregularities, malpractices or maladministration in the affairs of the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (Chieta). President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the investigation into the allocation of discretionary grant funding to entities in which Chieta employees or officials may have had undisclosed or unauthorised interests and the extent of any benefit derived by the employees or officials. Chieta's annual budget for the 2025/26 financial year exceeds R735 million, including R446 million allocated for discretionary grants. According to proclamation, the SIU will also probe any losses or actual or potential prejudice suffered by Chieta or the State as a result of such fraud, corruption, irregularities, malpractices or maladministration including the causes of such fraud, corruption, irregularities, malpractices or maladministration. Next Stay Close ✕ The corruption-busting unit will investigate the procurement and contracting of information and communications technology services, as well as auditing services, on behalf of Chieta, including any payments made. The SIU will determine whether the funds were spent in a manner that was not fair, equitable, transparent, competitive or cost-effective or contrary to applicable legislation, manuals, guidelines, practice notes, circulars or instructions issued by the National Treasury. It will also investigate if the expenditure adhered to manuals, codes, guidelines, policies, procedures, prescripts, instructions or practices of, or applicable to, Chieta, and any related losses or irregular or fruitless and wasteful expenditure incurred by the authority or the State as a result. Irregular, improper or unlawful conduct by employees or officials of Chieta, or any other person or entity, in relation to the allegations is also on the SIU's radar. The proclamation covers allegations of unlawful and improper conduct that occurred between January 2016 and this month as well as any related activities before 2016 and after the date of the proclamation that are pertinent to the matters under investigation or involve the same persons, entities or contracts. The SIU said it is committed to identifying systemic failures and recommending measures to prevent future losses beyond investigating maladministration, corruption and fraud. It will also refer any evidence of criminal conduct uncovered during its investigation to the National Prosecuting Authority for further action and is authorised to initiate a civil action to address any wrongdoing identified during its investigation resulting from acts of corruption, fraud or maladministration.

Jobs aren't coming so they created their own
At a time when youth unemployment continues to erode economic confidence, more than 30 young entrepreneurs have chosen a different path, creating businesses instead of waiting for jobs. Their achievements were celebrated on June 4 at a graduation ceremony hosted by the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) and the Johannesburg Business School (JBS), following the completion of two transformative, accredited qualifications in entrepreneurship and small business development. As these young entrepreneurs return to their communities, they carry more than certificates. They carry the tools and vision to spark grassroots economic renewal. The programmes, the Certificate in Entrepreneurial Development and the Certificate in Small Business Enrichment, are part of a strategic partnership between CHIETA and JBS at the University of Johannesburg, enabled by a R1 million discretionary grant from CHIETA. The funding supports sustainable entrepreneurship and leadership training aligned to national economic development goals. In her opening address, Professor Adri Drotskie, Acting Dean of JBS, emphasised the power of sector partnerships to create lasting impact: 'Our collaboration with CHIETA continues to build managerial capacity and entrepreneurial thinking. These graduates represent not only academic success but a growing movement of economic selfdetermination.' Delivering the keynote, Princess Kgakane, CHIETA Executive Manager for Grants, Projects and Regions, acknowledged the deeper significance of the moment: 'You've chosen growth over defeat. At a time when our expanded unemployment rate has reached 43.1%, your journey shows that with the right support, people don't just survive. They thrive.' CHIETA's investment forms part of a wider mission to drive inclusive skills development, particularly in the chemical sector and adjacent industries. The long-standing partnership with JBS has already yielded tangible results, empowering beneficiaries with practical business acumen, leadership confidence, and sector-relevant expertise.
