Sze Fei-Izzuddin through to Indonesia Open quarter-finals

(AFP pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Professional men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani led the charge of five Malaysian pairs into the quarter-finals of the Indonesia Open badminton tournament at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, today. In the second round of the Super 1000-level tournament, the world No 1 pair held off a tough challenge from compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong to seal a 21-14, 16-21, 21-14 victory in 54 minutes. The India Open champions will next face Indonesia's Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani. Joining Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin are Malaysia Masters champions Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who defeated compatriots Junaidi Arif-Yap Roy King 14-21, 21-11, 21-15. The world No 7 pair will go up against India's Satwisairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty. In the mixed doubles, second seeds Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei lived up to expectations by reaching the quarter-finals after ousting Denmark's Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch 21-9, 21-12 in just 31 minutes. They will next meet another Danish pair in Jesper Toft-Amalie Magelund. Also making it into the last eight are Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who defeated Indonesia's Amri Syahnawi-Nita Violina Marwah 21-12, 21-17 to set up a clash with Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran. Meanwhile, national top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah secured their spot in the quarter-finals after staging a comeback to beat Indonesia's Lanny Tria Mayasari-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti 18-21, 21-16, 21-17. The world No 4 pair will face Japan's Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi, who overcame Malaysia's Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting 21-15, 21-16 in the second round. In the men's singles, Malaysia's Leong Jun Hao was eliminated in the second round after failing to match the prowess of China's fourth seed Li Shi Feng, losing 18-21, 18-21.

The Malaysian world No 4 dug deep into their reserves before overcoming the 27th ranked Danish pair 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 in a 50-minute battle – their first encounter in international tournaments. Tang Jie-Ee Wei, reunited after a brief separation by the Badminton Association of Malaysia, showed glimpses of their old form, indicating that they are contenders for the Indonesia Open Super 1000 series title. In the semi-finals, Tang Jie-Ee Wei will meet world No 6 Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran, who defeated Malaysia's world No 5 shuttlers Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie in straight sets. The married couple lost 16-21, 12-21 to Dechapol-Supissara in a match that lasted only 33 minutes. The pairs have met eight times this year with Dechapol-Supissara winning five of the encounters. Tang Jie-Ee Wei have won three titles in the World Tour series: the French Orleans Masters and Taipei Open in 2023, and the Korea Open last year. They made it to the Super 1000 series finals in December, but lost to a Chinese pair.

PETALING JAYA, June 6 — National mixed doubles duo Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei fought back from a game down to book their spot in the Indonesia Open semi-finals today. Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported that the world No. 4 pair defeated Denmark's Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch Andreasen 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 in a 50-minute clash — their first meeting in international competition. Tang Jie and Ee Wei, who recently reunited after a brief split orchestrated by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), showed promising signs of their previous form as they eye the Super 1000 title in Jakarta. They will face Thailand's world No. 6 pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran in the last four. The Thai pair advanced after eliminating Malaysia's Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie in straight sets, winning 21-16, 21-12 in just 33 minutes. Goh and Shevon, currently ranked world No. 5, have now lost five of their eight encounters with Dechapol-Supissara this year. Tang Jie-Ee Wei have so far clinched three BWF World Tour titles — the Orléans Masters and Taipei Open in 2023, followed by the Korea Open last year. They also reached the Super 1000 finals in December but were denied the title by a Chinese pair.

The world No 4 pair took only 31 minutes to defeat Denmark's Mats Vestergaard-Christine Busch Andreasen 21-9, 21-12. The Malaysians have now won all three encounters. Their victory came shortly after Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai, ranked No 5 in the world, booked their quarter-final spot earlier in the day. Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who recently reunited after a brief separation, are expected to face a tougher test next against Denmark's world No 8 pair Jesper Toft-Amalie Magelund. The Malaysians are still seeking their first final appearance of the year. Their last title came at the Korea Open in 2023, followed by a runner-up finish at the World Tour Super 1000 in China last December.

That's the challenge facing mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, who are still trying to rediscover their synergy on court after being reunited recently. The duo cleared their opening hurdle at the Indonesian Open yesterday, defeating India's Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto 21-11, 16-21, 21-14. But it was far from a convincing display. Tang Jie-Ee Wei looked tense at times and struggled to find answers against their resilient opponents, but did just enough to pull through to the second round. 'I think they're always tough opponents because they're aggressive, physically strong and skilful,' said Tang Jie in an interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF). 'Like Toh (Ee Wei), I'm still trying to regain my rhythm on court. That's why we keep pushing, stay motivated and support each other to get it back.'
