With ISL future in doldrums, Chennaiyin FC sack coach Owen Coyle

Owen Coyle CHENNAI: There is no clarity yet when the next edition of the Indian Super League will start, forcing two-time champions Chennaiyin FC to go into a cost-cutting mode. After letting go of quite a few prominent players, CFC have now terminated the contract of their highly-paid head coach Owen Coyle. Coyle, whose contract was extended by a year in October and was due to expire at the end of the upcoming season, was shown the door after he failed to replicate his ISL Season 6 heroics at the club. CFC agreed to pay a compensation fee – more than half of his per-season value – to Coyle since the Scotsman had a year left on his deal. 'Chennaiyin and Coyle decided to part ways after finding a middle ground,' a source told TOI on Thursday. 'The club is unsure about what is going to happen to the league. Keeping that in mind, Chennaiyin did not want to have a high-value coach on their payroll,' said the source. CFC will begin their hunt for a new chief coach only when there is clarity over the upcoming ISL season. It has been learnt that the top brass decided to bite the bullet after taking into consideration the team's poor performances across competitions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This New AC Cooler Cools the Room In Seconds Coldeez Cooling Ace Undo Chennaiyin did not even come close to qualifying for the playoffs in the last ISL, finishing a lowly 11th with just 27 points from 24 matches. In the season-ending Super Cup, a knockout tournament that offered a continental spot, CFC crashed out in the first round following a 0-4 thrashing at the hands of a depleted Mumbai City FC side. Credited with developing young Indian players in the past, Coyle struggled to extract the best out of youngsters in his second spell at Chennaiyin. Despite being backed during the transfer windows with the signings of Kiyan Nassiri, Gurkirat Singh and Lalrinliana Hnamte among others, the Scottish coach did not inspire much. At the end of last season, Coyle was optimistic about staying at the club. 'Why would I not intend to be the coach when I have a contract? As far as I am led to believe, I will be the Chennaiyin coach next season,' Coyle said in a post-match interaction. In the 2023-24 season, Coyle had achieved the club's primary objective of making it to the ISL top-six. CFC play waiting game for next season: Like some of their ISL rivals, Chennaiyin are playing the waiting game. 'We do not know whether the ISL will happen or not. We would have had to spend approximately Rs 70 lakh if we had confirmed our participation in the Durand Cup. Even if we assemble a squad, what are we supposed to do with it? We do not even have a local league where we can engage our players,' said a CFC official.

ISL: Chennaiyin FC Mutually Part Ways With Head Coach Owen Coyle

Last Updated: Chennaiyin and Coyle have parted ways after a disappointing 2024-25 ISL season. Coyle, who led the team to the playoffs in 2023, leaves as one of ISL's most successful managers. Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Chennaiyin FC and head coach Owen Coyle have mutually agreed to part ways, the club announced on Thursday. 'Chennaiyin FC and Head Coach Owen Coyle have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Vaathi for his invaluable contributions to the club and wish him the very best in his future endeavours," the club posted on X (formerly Twitter). Coyle had signed a contract extension in 2023 that was set to keep him at the club until 2026. Underwhelming Season Ends in Separation Chennaiyin FC endured a disappointing 2024–25 ISL campaign, finishing 11th in the standings with just seven wins in 24 matches. Although the season began promisingly under Coyle's leadership — with the club remaining unbeaten on the road and collecting seven points from their first four games — they failed to build on that momentum. Their campaign ended on a high note with a dominant 5-2 home win over Jamshedpur FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, but it wasn't enough to salvage the season or the coach's position. This marked Coyle's second tenure at Chennaiyin. He first took over during the 2019–20 season, guiding the club from the brink of elimination to a remarkable ISL final appearance. After returning in 2023, he once again made an immediate impact, steering Chennaiyin into the playoffs for the first time in four years. Widely regarded as one of the most successful managers in ISL history, the Scottish tactician previously won the ISL Shield with Jamshedpur FC and was celebrated for his ability to develop local talent, aligning well with Chennaiyin's vision of nurturing young Indian players. ISL 2025–26 Season on Hold Amid Uncertainty In a related development, the Indian Super League's 2025–26 season has been put on hold due to unresolved contractual issues between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and the All India Football Federation (AIFF). FSDL, a subsidiary of IMG Reliance and the ISL's official organizer, issued a letter to participating clubs stating it could not 'effectively plan, organise, or commercialise the 2025–26 ISL season" in the absence of a new agreement. The Master Rights Agreement (MRA) between FSDL and AIFF is set to expire on December 8, 2025, and negotiations for an extension have stalled, prompting the league to temporarily suspend planning activities for the upcoming season. view comments First Published: July 17, 2025, 17:39 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mumbai City FC beat Chennaiyin FC 4-0 in Kalinga Super Cup

Bhubaneswar, Apr 24 (UNI) Lallianzuala Chhangte delivered a captain's performance with a dazzling brace as Mumbai City FC breezed past Chennaiyin FC 4-0 in a dominant Round of 16 encounter of the 2025 Kalinga Super Cup at the Kalinga Stadium here. The first half ended 1-0. Nikolaos Karelis (43') scored the first goal for Mumbai City FC at the stroke of half time before Lallianzuala Chhangte (64', 86') stole the show with his two goals. Substitute Bipin Singh (90') capped off the win with a strike in the last minute on Wednesday night. Mumbai City FC, still smarting from a heavy 0-5 defeat against Bengaluru FC in the ISL knockout rounds, responded in emphatic fashion to book their place in the Kalinga Super Cup quarter-finals. Their opponents, Chennaiyin FC, had finished a disappointing 11th in the ISL, and their Super Cup journey came to an end after another underwhelming performance. From the opening whistle, Mumbai City were on the front foot. The attacking trio of Chhangte, Karelis, and Jorge Ortiz looked sharp, with intricate passing and excellent movement that repeatedly exposed gaps in the Chennaiyin backline. Chhangte nearly opened the scoring early on when he latched onto a defensive error, glided past his marker and unleashed a shot towards the far post only to see it come back off the woodwork. Chennaiyin struggled to settle into the game and were denied what looked like a potential penalty after Daniel Chima Chukwu was brought down in the box by Vikram Pratap Singh, but the referee waved play on. The breakthrough finally came in the 43rd minute. A half-cleared corner fell kindly to Hitesh Sharma, who lofted a teasing ball into the box. Chennaiyin goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz was a tad late in coming out to affect a save and Nikolaos Karelis made no mistake, nodding home from close range to put the Islanders ahead at the break. After the interval, Mumbai City resumed their control. Ortiz and Chhangte combined beautifully to carve open chances, and the latter came close again before Chennaiyin nearly found an equaliser. Lukas Brambilla danced past Mumbai City goalkeeper TP Rehenesh and seemed destined to score, but Mehtab Singh's goal-line clearance denied Chennaiyin a lifeline. That moment proved to be the turning point. In the 64th minute, Ortiz once again danced past his marker and slipped Karelis in behind. The Greek forward's effort across goal wasn't the cleanest, but Chhangte was there at the far post to tap it into an open net and double Mumbai City's lead. Chhangte struck again in the 86th minute with a touch of class. Ortiz played a sublime outside-of-the-boot flick to send him through. The winger cut inside on his favoured left foot and curled a low shot past the goalkeeper to make it 3-0. In the last minute of the game, Chhangte turned provider. A delicate scooped pass found Bipin Singh in the box, who brushed aside pressure from Mandar Rao Desai and calmly slotted home to complete the rout. Lallianzuala Chhangte was presented the Kalinga Player of the Match award. UNI BM

Super Cup: Chennaiyin FC to go all out for AFC spot

Chennaiyin FC's Connor Shields in training CHENNAI: After a nightmarish Indian Super League campaign, where they did not even come close to qualifying for the playoffs, Chennaiyin FC will be eager to salvage some pride in the Super Cup in Bhubaneswar. Chennaiyin will begin their run with a challenging round-of-16 fixture against ISL big gun Mumbai City FC on Wednesday. The knockout tournament offers CFC another opportunity to end a long wait – while Chennaiyin have not won silverware since their 2017-18 ISL triumph, they have not been at the continental level since the 2018-19 season. For CFC to pose a threat, they will have to stay 'consistent', a quality that head coach Owen Coyle believes they lacked in the ISL. 'When we are at our best, we can stand toe-to-toe with the best teams. The cup competition is a great opportunity for everybody, because there is an AFC spot up for grabs. There is an incentive for everyone to go and win the cup,' Coyle said. 'We started the ISL season well and finished strongly. We had a poor middle section of the season. For sure, there is added motivation to finish the season on a high. We were very inconsistent in the ISL; that is what cost us a place in the top-six. We have to get back to giving good performances consistently,' added Coyle. Chennaiyin should show drastic improvement in the defensive department, after keeping only four clean sheets in the league stage of the ISL. The luxury to use both Ryan Edwards and Elsinho at the heart of defence at the same time – a club can field a maximum of six foreigners – could solve some issues for the chief coach. Coyle acknowledged that there is a huge scope for improvement in defence but stressed that the team would not get into a shell for the sake of a clean sheet. 'That (poor defending) was the biggest thing that hurt us in the ISL; we did not defend well enough. But in cup competitions, you have to win games. We will certainly not be seeing a more defensive approach; we will see a team going out to win games,' said Coyle. What should give CFC a bit of hope for Wednesday's game is the fact that Mumbai could miss a few key players due to different reasons (injuries, rehabilitation and personal situation). While Jon Toral and Jayesh Rane have been ruled out of the tournament, Yoell van Nieff, Jeremy Manzorro and Prabir Das are doubtful starters for the clash on Wednesday. Asked if CFC will have the upper hand, Coyle replied: 'We are under no illusion; Mumbai are a wonderful side. Van Nieff and Manzorro could probably make it to the game. They have many good Indian players like Lallianzuala Chhangte, Vikram Pratap Singh and Mehtab Singh who add to the mix.' Kalinga Super Cup 2025: Chennaiyin FC Name Squad For Round-Of -16 Clash Against Mumbai City FC

Wilmar Jordan Gil and Daniel Chima Chukwu lead the attack, with the former aiming to become the outright top-scorer of the Super Cup. With eight combined goals across multiple editions, Jordan, the leading cup scorer in 2023, is a goal shy of Sunil Chhetri at the top of the all-time standings. Chennaiyin head into the tournament on the back of a convincing 5-2 win over Jamshedpur FC in their final league game in March. Building on that momentum, the Marina Machans spent three weeks training locally and played a friendly against East Bengal FC in Kolkata to sharpen up for the Super Cup. 'We're under no illusions how difficult the game will be–Mumbai City are a wonderful side, with some outstanding players, both foreign and domestic. But, we're looking forward to the game, we've shown that when we are at our very best, we can stand toe-to-toe with the best teams," said Coyle in his pre-match press conference. 'The Super Cup is a great opportunity for everybody because there is an AFC spot available. There's a huge incentive to have a go and win the cup," he added. Advertisement Chennaiyin and Mumbai City share a history in this competition. The two sides have faced off three times in the Super Cup, with Chennaiyin claiming victory once, at this very stage in 2019, a result that sparked their run to the final. That history adds an extra layer of intrigue to Wednesday's fixture, with the winner advancing to play either Bengaluru FC or Inter Kashi in the quarterfinals. Joining Coyle for the press conference was Shields, who topped the playmaking charts in ISL 2024-25 with eight assists and recorded the most chances created in the league (76) in 21 games. advetisement Speaking ahead of the fixture, Shields said, 'We're looking forward to it. We didn't finish well in the ISL, but we've been back training for three weeks now, and everyone is ready to go." Ahead of the tie, Coyle also confirmed that he has no fresh injury concerns, barring Laldinliana Renthlei, who is recovering from a long-term affliction and thus misses the squad, with one final training session scheduled before matchday. advetisement Chennaiyin FC's Full Squad for Kalinga Super Cup 2025: Goalkeepers: Mohammad Nawaz, Samik Mitra, Malhar Umesh Mohol Defenders: Ryan Edwards, PC Laldinpuia, Vignesh Dakshinamurthy, Ankit Mukherjee, Mandar Rao Dessai, Pritam Kotal, Edwin Sydney Vanspaul
