KUALA LUMPUR: Wushu star Tan Cheong Min has dedicated her historic World Games gold medal to the nation as a Merdeka Day gift. Cheong Min struck gold in Chengdu on Saturday in the women's nandao (broadsword) — the first time wushu has been contested as an official event at the World Games. "This gold medal is not just for me. It is for Malaysia and a gift for this year's Merdeka Day," said the Melaka-born athlete. "Previously, wushu wasn't an official World Games event, so the Asian Games and World Championships were our highest platforms. I am very proud and happy." The former world champion hopes her victory will inspire other athletes to push for excellence and further raise the sport's profile. Her win lifted Malaysia's medal tally at the Chengdu Games to three — one gold, one silver and one bronze. Buoyed by her success, Cheong Min is now targeting gold at the World Championships in Brazil in September, before switching her focus to the SEA Games in Thailand in December. She said her achievement last Saturday was also an important recognition for the sport, as it was contested as an official event at the World Games for the first time. 'This gold medal is not just for me. It is for Malaysia and a gift for this year's National Day. 'Previously, wushu was not an official event in the World Games. So the Asian Games and World Championships were regarded as the highest platforms for us. I am very proud and happy,' she said when contacted today. The former world champion hoped her success would inspire other athletes to keep striving for excellence and continue to elevate the sport's status. Cheong Min's gold boosted Malaysia's overall medal haul at the Chengdu Games to three, with the other two being a silver and a bronze. The Melaka-born athlete said the victory has boosted her motivation as she now turns her focus to several upcoming competitions this year. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia ended their World Games campaign in Chengdu, China, on Saturday by adding a silver medal, but the star of the show was wushu queen Tan Cheong Min. She struck gold in the nandao and nanquan combined event with a score of 19.479 points, finishing ahead of Uzbekistan's Darya Latisheva (19.433) and Singapore's Kassandra Ong (19.386). It was the country's first World Games gold in the sport. Cheong Min, a world champion in 2017 (Duilian) and 2019 (Nandao), credited the Chengdu crowd for inspiring her to victory. "This is my first time in Chengdu, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere," she told CGTN Sports. "Having won at the World and Asian levels, I felt some pressure to perform here, but the support from the audience encouraged me to give my best." Cheong Min is only the fourth Malaysian to win gold at the World Games. Bowlers Daniel Lim and Sharon Low clinched the mixed doubles in Finland (1997), while squash legend Nicol David bagged three golds between 2005 (Germany) and 2013 (Colombia). Her latest triumph adds to an impressive collection — two world titles, two golds at the 2023 Phnom Penh SEA Games, gold at the 2023 World Combat Games, gold at the 2024 Asian Championships, and two Taolu World Cup titles (2018 and 2024). She will next compete at the World Championships in Brazil next month, followed by the Thailand SEA Games in December. Pang Pui Yee took silver in the changquan, qiangshu (spear) and jianshu (sword) combined event, scoring 29.189 points at the Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium. It was Malaysia's third medal in Chengdu. Sydney Chin had opened the tally with bronze in the women's taijijian-taijiquan all-round event on Friday. Malaysia sent a small contingent of five athletes competing in two sports to the World Games. On Friday, Clement Ting finished fifth in the men's changquan, daoshu and gunshu all-round event (28.815), while compound archer Alang Ariff Aqil Ghazali exited in the first round after losing to Turkiye's Yagiz Sezgin. Malaysia's haul of one gold, one silver and one bronze placed them 16th overall — ahead of Indonesia (one gold, one silver) and Singapore (one silver, three bronze) in 28th place. The World Games will conclude on Aug 17.

Cheong Min delivered a commanding display in the women's nandao (broadsword) event at the Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium on Saturday, scoring 9.733 points. This came after her equally impressive performance in the nanquan (fist) event on Friday, where she topped the field with 9.746 points. Her combined total of 19.479 points saw her edge Uzbekistan's Darya Latisheva (19.433) and Singapore's Kassandra Ong (19.386) to claim gold. Cheong Min becomes only the fourth Malaysian athlete to win gold at the prestigious World Games, held every four years. She joins an elite list that includes bowlers Daniel Lim and Sharon Low (mixed doubles, Finland 1997) and squash legend Nicol David, who won three golds (Germany 2005, Taiwan 2009, Colombia 2013). Cheong Min's historic feat was matched by teammate Sydney Chin, who claimed Malaysia's first medal of the Games earlier in the week with a bronze in the women's taijiquan and taijijian all-round event. Sydney scored 19.410 points, behind gold medallist China's Lu Zhuoling (19.522) and Singapore's Zeanne Law (19.430). Malaysia's wushu squad at Chengdu also includes Pang Pui Yee and newly crowned Taolu Asia Cup champion Clement Ting.
