NRL news: Cooper Cronk expected to depart Roosters in move 'unrelated' to Daly Cherry-Evans' arrival
The Roosters are still keen on Cherry-Evans despite questions about whether they'd backflip. Daly Cherry-Evans' expected arrival at the Roosters will reportedly coincide with Cooper Cronk's exit, although it's been stressed the two are not related. Speaking on '100% Footy' this week on Channel 9, leading journalist Michael Chammas reported the Roosters are still expected to sign Cherry-Evans for 2026. Questions had emerged about whether the Roosters would get cold feet on DCE considering the form of their young halves this year. But Chammas reported that Cherry-Evans will be wearing the tricolours next season. The 36-year-old was reportedly seeking a two-year extension from Manly, but Carayannis revealed it'll likely only be a one-year deal at the Roosters. Chammas said Cherry-Evans will then transition into a coaching role after 2026. Daly Cherry-Evans is still expected to join the Roosters in 2026, but Cooper Cronk is reportedly set to relinquish his role at the club. Image: Getty "My understanding is it's a one-year deal. He will announce that later in the year," Chammas said. "It'll have a one-year (deal) continuing on as a coach. "Danny (Weidler) last week spoke about how Daly Cherry-Evans will move into a coaching role once he retires." ADVERTISEMENT RELATED: Chammas also revealed that Roosters officials don't expect Cronk to continue in his role as a part-time halves consultant past this season. "This is unrelated, but it looks like Cooper Cronk's time at the club is coming to an end. My understanding is that he has been working as a halves consultant there for a number of years since retiring," Chammas said. "He wants to move in a different direction. He has different interests in life around the corporate world, and at the moment he is struggling to make commitment and time around the Roosters. The club is aware of his feeling and it looks like his time at the club will come to an end as Daly arrives." Cooper Cronk (R) has been working with the Roosters part-time since 2020. (Photo by) Questions around Cooper Cronk's future in Roosters role Cherry-Evans' coaching role will likely be as a halves specialist, meaning there won't be a need for both him and champion No.7 Cronk at the club. Cronk won four premierships with the Melbourne Storm (two of which were later stripped), before moving to the Roosters and winning two more. ADVERTISEMENT There were rumblings in 2023 that Cronk was set to depart his role as a halves coach amid the Roosters' desire to shake things up. But that proved to be untrue, with head-coach Trent Robinson rubbishing the reports. "Any other reports are just a long list of hearsay that's been going on," Robinson said at the time. "I don't even know where they're from ... All of my staff that are here this year will be here next year. That's pretty clear." Speaking back in March amid the initial reports that Cherry-Evans would be offered a coaching role at the Roosters for when he eventually retires, swimming great and NRL fanatic James Magnussen questioned what it would mean for Cronk. Speaking on SEN radio alongside former NRL player Justin Horo, Magnussen said: "Will he get a coaching job at the Roosters when they have Cooper Cronk doing the halves coaching? Or do they say to Cooper your time is done now, give him the punt, and bring DCE in? Or is he a TV guy now?" Probably the same deal that Chad was offered, wonder if they can co-coach — Rock Sniffer (@SniffRocks) July 22, 2025 Roosters really showing Sandon the door for a washed DCE 😂 interested to see what the lineup looks like? — Kez-G (@KezzaBear24) July 21, 2025 does DCE guranteed "job" fall under salary cap? — GRUN (@GRUN_TECH) July 22, 2025 Yahoo has contacted the Sydney Roosters for comment in regard to Cronk's role and future at the club.

NSW Police annihilate Queensland in just three words after Origin beat down
Queenslanders are licking their wounds after another NSW ambush at Suncorp Stadium, but south of the border, Blues fans are more than happy to stick the boot in. While the scoreline appeared close at 18-6, it was a near complete capitulation from the Maroons, who hardly looked like scoring, only taking advantage of a Brian To'o sin bin on the stroke of halftime to boot a penalty goal, before Xavier Coates scored in the 45th minute against 12 Blues. The scoreline could have been much worse with Nathan Cleary and Zac Lomax leaving their goalkicking boots at home, kicking just one penalty goal and missing all four conversion attempts. In front of a crowd that was 57 people short of the all-time record at Suncorp Stadium, the usually rowdy Queensland fans were kept quiet as the Maroons never really got started, slumping to the state's first back-to-back losses at Suncorp Stadium in Origin since 1997-98. Pre-game the confidence was oozing out for the state with the Queensland Police Service taking to Facebook to post a confident message — as well as letting fans know not to get behind the wheel after a big night. 'Maroons fans, we'll be patrolling harder than Queensland's defence tonight so don't even think about driving after hitting the Milton mangoes,' the post read. 'Cherry-Evans can't save us from traffic, so expect delays around Suncorp from 4pm. Get there safe, get home safe and let's show 'em the only thing the Blues can catch is public transport back to NSW. 'Unlike a NSW training session, we'll be watching.' It was far from the only banter with Queensland Health offering health advice 'for the burn that's coming after you (NSW) lose tonight's game', while the Queensland Government page said: 'We've dispatched extra supplies of aloe vera and tissues to the border (just in case). Hang in there NSW, we'll try not to win too convincingly …' While the police forces usually have some decent banter in the lead up to Origin matches, the NSW force timed it perfectly to stick the boot in at full-time. 'Didn't age well,' the response read. Queensland Police responded on Thursday morning writing: 'You got us this time – well done, Blues. But hey, don't get comfy,' as well as 'Also we didn't realise telling people not to drink and drive could age badly NSW? Interesting.' NSW Police also hit back at Queensland Health, writing: 'At least they can take their own advice.' A fan also hit back at the Queensland Government tissue offer, saying: 'Keep your tissues and CRYYYY'. While the quality of the game was largely panned by fans at full-time, it's good to see the banter continue. But the result raises more questions for the Maroons, who will now need to win in Perth to force an Origin decider in the Blues backyard to stop NSW lifting the shield for a second year. The footy world has turned on the ageing Maroons with captain Daly Cherry-Evans, who became the oldest player in Origin history, and five-eighth Cameron Munster copping a brunt of the criticism.
