Chery Tiggo 8 CSH arrives as South Africa's least expensive plug-in hybrid with seven seats
The Chery Tiggo 8 CSH can cover a claimed 90km on battery power alone. Image: Supplied Hot on the heels of the Tiggo 7 CSH, Chery has introduced a second plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in the form of the larger Tiggo 8 CSH. Priced at R729,900, the Tiggo 8 PHEV is the least expensive seven-seat plug-in hybrid for sale in South Africa, offering a unique alternative to those seeking such a package with added practicality. It slots neatly above the trio of five-seat PHEVs introduced to the market in recent times, these being Chery's Tiggo 7 CSH (from R599,900), the BYD Sealion 6 (R639,900) and Jaecoo J7 1.5T SHS (R689,900). The Tiggo 8's drivetrain pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a powerful electric motor for system outputs of 255kW and 525Nm, making it slightly less powerful than its Tiggo 7 CSH sibling, which offers 265kW and 530Nm. Power goes to the front wheels via Chery's Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) and drivers can choose between Eco, Normal and Sport modes. The newcomer is fitted with an 18.3 kWh battery that allows for a claimed all-electric range of up to 90km between recharges, while also extending the overall range to 1,200km between refuels. Chery claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 1.3 litres per 100km, when the battery is regularly charged. When the vehicle goes into battery save mode, below 30%, customers can expect a consumption figure of 5.2 l/100km, the company claims. What features does the Tiggo 8 CSH have? The new Tiggo 8 PHEV is offered in a single trim grade, which Chery calls 'Apex', and it's got absolutely everything. Standard features include a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 12-speaker Sony sound system, Intelligent Voice Command, electric adjustment for the front seats, with a massage function for the front passenger, 54-degree surround camera, head-up display, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof and an electric tailgate. The Tiggo 8 CSH is only available with top-tier specification. 'The Tiggo 8 CSH Hybrid is designed to give South African families a smarter, more efficient way to get around without compromising on space or safety,' said Verene Petersen, marketing manager at Chery SA. In terms of after-sales, the Tiggo 8 CSH is sold with a seven-year or 90,000km service plan and seven-year or 200,000km warranty. There's also a 10-year or 1 million kilometre engine warranty, which applies to the first owner but can be transferred to a second owner if the vehicle is purchased from one of Chery's 'Cherished' pre-owned dealerships.. Chery rolls out ‘Cherished' pre-owned car programme across SA
Chery SA has introduced a certified pre-owned vehicle programme called Cherished. The pre-owned models come with the full backing of the Chinese carmaker and provide dealers with a selection of carefully inspected and high-quality pre-owned Chery SUVs, said Jay Jay Botes, GM for Chery SA. He said all cars retain the remainder of the 10-year/one-million-kilometre engine warranty, a benefit exclusively available from Cherished dealers within the Chery dealer network. The engine warranty was initially available only to the first owner and was not transferable. Botes said every vehicle undergoes a comprehensive inspection and all Cherished pre-owned vehicles receive the balance of the service plan, with a minimum of one-year/15,000km remaining. To qualify as a Cherished vehicle, all Chery models need to have been maintained within the Chery Dealer network. Additionally, customers will be offered the chance to extend their service or maintenance plans, providing further peace of mind. Chery returned to the SA market in 2021 after exiting in 2018. It has become the country's second-best-selling Chinese car brand behind GWM/Haval.
