Manufacturer launches groundbreaking product that could revolutionize the seafood industry: 'Meets uncompromising standards'
A packaging breakthrough is helping seafood companies cut costs and carbon pollution while keeping products fresh, Sustainability Magazine reported. DS Smith recently unveiled DryPack, a 100% recyclable, water-resistant packaging solution created for the seafood industry. This innovative packaging addresses a longtime challenge in the seafood supply chain. The recyclable, fiber-based boxes replace traditional non-recyclable, wax-coated or foam containers that typically end up in landfills. DryPack boxes incorporate special GreenCoat technology that's durable and moisture-resistant without compromising recyclability. For consumers, this means the fish they buy comes with less environmental baggage. Since DryPack ships flat and is assembled at processing facilities, it drastically reduces transportation space, cutting fuel consumption and freight costs that would otherwise be passed on to shoppers. By replacing petroleum-based packaging with recyclable alternatives, DryPack helps reduce reliance on dirty fuels that drive increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events and contribute to air pollution that affects community health. This shift from plastic packaging also means fewer microplastics will enter our waterways and food chain. The seafood industry faces unique packaging challenges. Products need to stay cold, fresh, and maintain their quality while being transported. DryPack addresses these challenges in a way that benefits the environment. The boxes meet strict food safety standards set by regulatory bodies including the Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration, which gives seafood companies confidence in compliance while advancing their sustainability goals. "DS Smith is changing how the seafood industry delivers seafood, salmon and other fish from catch to customers with DryPack, a proven, 100% recyclable, fiber-based box that meets uncompromising standards and stands up to the rigor of processing and transportation," Cheryl Holliday, marketing director for DS Smith North America, said. Steven Rose, managing director of packaging for DS Smith North America, added, "By shipping empty DryPack seafood boxes flat at a lower cost — and offering customers an alternative to [expanded polystyrene] boxes — we can support seafood processors in their efforts to increase efficiency and reduce supply chain costs." Manufacturer introduces new innovation that will make it easier than ever for online shoppers to return items: 'Redefining packaging'
Returning packages just got easier — and greener — thanks to DS Smith's newest, revolutionary tape design, Tape Back. Online shopping has made buying items easier than ever, but it is no secret that traditional methods for returning these items can be a hassle — not to mention wasteful. Traditional return policies have required customers to ship packages back on their own, with plastic sticky tape being the norm for securing materials. As detailed by Packaging World, North American-based packaging producer DS Smith hopes to eliminate that need by integrating built-in adhesive strips in its shipping materials, allowing consumers to reseal packages effortlessly. By simply uncovering the adhesive located on the inside of the box, consumers will be able to reseal their packages seamlessly. No extra materials, no waste — just peel, press, and send it back. When you think about a product's packaging, which of these factors is more important to you? The way it looks The information it provides The waste it produces I don't think about packaging at all Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Proponents of the design have already said it "improves customer efficiency," according to Business Wire, an ambassador for the product and an early testament to the standard the product is setting for the company. True to its mantra, "Redefining packaging for a changing world," according to its website, DS Smith's innovation marks a major step forward in packaging solutions that prioritize convenience and sustainability in an industry where this mindset is uncommon. Traditional, single-use plastic tapes are petroleum-based, which is linked to dirty energy consumption. By eliminating the need to rely on these resources, DS Smith is helping to lessen the effects of pollution while minimizing plastic waste. Less plastic consumption means less pollution on the planet, which will curb Earth's overheating and reduce the effects caused by a rising global temperature, like worsening extreme weather events, creating a brighter future for today and for future generations. Due to Tape Back's reusability, dirty energy pollution is even less, maximizing the product's efficiency and commitment to environmental consciousness. It also makes it easier for consumers to recycle curbside by limiting hidden non–recyclable material and avoiding mixing components. "DS Smith understands the growing importance of sustainable packaging solutions in today's e-commerce landscape, specifically as it relates to consumers returning goods," said Cheryl Holliday, the marketing director of DS Smith. "Tape Back is a direct response to the demand for more environmentally friendly and efficient return processes and demonstrates our commitment to creating circular design solutions." DS Smith Study Reveals Majority of U.S. Consumers Want Sustainable, Intelligent Packaging
Retailers are under the microscope for space, material and technology of packaging ATLANTA, February 27, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--DS Smith, a leading fiber-based packaging manufacturer, which was acquired by International Paper in 2025, found through its Unboxing Consumer Preferences on Sustainable Packaging survey that sustainability is the most important attribute of a shipping package. The survey of 1,048 adults in the United States also indicated that consumers want retail brands to clearly communicate their sustainability success and are paying attention to how retailers are cutting out waste in stores and in e-commerce. "It is clear from the Unboxing Consumer Preferences survey that U.S. consumers are not only concerned about the sustainability of their packages, but they are also willing to do their part and pay more for a better solution," said Cheryl Holliday, Director, Marketing for DS Smith North America. "DS Smith is encouraged by the importance retailers and consumers are putting on sustainable packaging and believe the solutions exist to help manufacturers and retailers meet these expectations." As more big brands and retailers look to cut their carbon footprints and improve the buying experience, they are taking a fresh look at packaging. From space utilization to material choice and how technology can elevate the delivery experience, consumers are indicating what is important to them. Key factors include: Packaging Space – 46% of consumers say empty space in a box bothers them and 75% of those same respondents said empty space indicates the brand doesn't prioritize sustainability. In-store Waste Reduction – 33% of consumers have noticed better options to reduce waste at check-out included options for paperless receipts and removal of plastic bags. Stuffing Material – 50% of consumers see Styrofoam as a last resort for stuffing material and 1 in 5 won't buy from a company that uses the material. Intelligent Packaging – 75% of consumers are interested in intelligent packaging - those built with sensors to ensure the product remains in optimal condition or temperature - with 28% willing to pay up to $5 more for an intelligent package. In addition to more sustainable and intelligent packaging, consumers have indicated they are also interested in connected packaging – a package that includes a QR code printed inside to scan for exclusive content. Top preferences for QR content include personalized discounts, access to exclusive experiences and sustainability metrics from the manufacturer. DS Smith Circular Design Principles help customers embrace circularity, helping them achieve their wider sustainability goals. By designing 100% recyclable or reusable packaging and helping its customers design out hard to recycle plastics, DS Smith is keeping materials in use for longer.
