Hong Kong takes action over Shenzhen-based tutorial centre offering DSE courses in city

Hong Kong education authorities are taking law enforcement action against a Shenzhen-based tutorial centre that planned to recruit students for its university entrance exam programmes at a local private secondary school without registering. Advertisement The Education Bureau said on Thursday that it had not received an application from the tutorial centre Capture Star to operate a school or run educational courses at premises currently occupied by the private Tsung Tsin Middle School in Cheung Sha Wan. 'The Education Bureau is taking appropriate law enforcement actions against Capture Star for recruiting students into its programmes before it was approved as a registered school,' it said in a reply to the Post. 'The bureau has also contacted the person in charge of Tsung Tsin Middle School for an explanation.' The move came after Capture Star promoted a Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) exam programme for the 2025 school year on social media, claiming to be partnering with Tsung Tsin. Advertisement 'Tsung Tsin Middle School in Hong Kong will be providing registered student status, school campus and hardware facilities, while Capture Star will be responsible for the teaching of the DSE programme, curriculum development and further education counselling,' said the promotion, which was still displayed on the centre's social media account.

Hong Kong coach cleared of molesting women's football team player

A Hong Kong court has cleared a 42-year-old coach of molesting a former player on the city's women's football team on two occasions in 2021 by highlighting inconsistencies in the complainant's evidence. West Kowloon Court on Thursday found Wong Chi-wai not guilty of two counts of indecent assault and highlighted 'crucial' discrepancies between the written and oral testimonies of the woman, who had also worked in the defendant's sportswear firm. Magistrate Peter Yu Chun-cheung said the witness, referred to as Y in court, had given inconsistent accounts of how Wong allegedly groped her chest while she was working at his company's office in Cheung Sha Wan in May or June of 2021. Yu said he was also unable to conclude that Wong must have intended to assault the woman when he patted and stroked her thigh during a brief meeting inside his car in January that year. 'Based on my observations on Y, I am unsure as to what had happened, and that I cannot safely accept her evidence,' the magistrate said. Wong was arrested in August 2022 following complaints by two women, who had both played for Hong Kong's women's football team and worked at his company.

About 50 workers in Hong Kong owed more than HK$7 million as another eatery closes

About 50 workers in Hong Kong are seeking to recover more than HK$7 million (US$892,000) in unpaid wages and other payments following the shutdown of another restaurant amid a string of closures in the catering industry. Advertisement Chiu Kwun-chung, head of the Eating Establishment Employees General Union's labour rights committee, said the group was notified on Friday morning that Glorious Seafood Restaurant at Cheung Sha Wan Plaza had closed permanently. Chiu said the closure affected about 50 employees, who sought to recover more than HK$7 million in outstanding wages, payments in lieu of notice, payments for untaken annual leave, and severance payments. The union assisted affected workers in filing claims with authorities, he said. The closure is the latest in a string of similar moves by businesses in the city's catering sector. Advertisement Star Seafood and Roasted Goose Restaurant at Chuk Yuen Plaza in Wong Tai Sin announced last week that it would be shutting down on Friday, when its lease expired.

Hong Kong teen dies after being found unconscious in bedroom with ‘space oil' drug

A 17-year-old has died in a Hong Kong hospital after being found unconscious in his bedroom, where police also discovered the narcotic 'space oil', the Post has learned. A police source said on Monday that the teenager's mother had attempted to wake him at their home in Cheung Sha Wan at around 8.45am on Sunday. He was rushed to Caritas Medical Centre in Sham Shui Po, where he was declared dead at 9.49am on Sunday. A police spokesman said officers discovered multiple dangerous substances in the flat, including a vape device containing liquid etomidate, the main ingredient in the drug commonly known as 'space oil'. Cannabis and ketamine were also seized. The source said the 'space oil' was inside the bedroom where the teenager was found. There were no suspicious injuries on his body, but he had multiple self-inflicted wounds on his shoulders and forearms. The teenager did not leave the flat on Saturday. At around 5am the following morning, his father saw him using the bathroom and said he appeared normal. The father also reminded him to take his prescribed psychiatric medication, which he did before returning to his room.

Hong Kong father's anguish after inquest rules teen died of natural causes

A coroner's inquest has ruled that a 14-year-old girl died of natural causes after developing acute myocarditis in Hong Kong three years ago, despite her father's insistence that her death was linked to coronavirus vaccinations. The girl's father, Tai Shun-keung, called Friday's ruling 'unacceptable', stating that the incident had torn his family apart and led him to depression. A five-member jury at the Coroner's Court delivered a unanimous verdict on Friday, following a three-day inquiry, that Tai Yee-ting died of natural causes at Caritas Medical Centre in Cheung Sha Wan in May 2022. The inquest specifically investigated whether her death was related to the two BioNTech coronavirus vaccine doses she received during the Covid-19 pandemic. She had her first jab in January 2022 and the second in April of the same year. Yee-ting felt tired and vomited before she was taken to see a private doctor on May 5, 2022. She presented with symptoms such as fatigue, loss of appetite and a low fever. The doctor diagnosed her as having gastroenteritis and prescribed medication.
