Chevening-Karnataka scholarship: Five women selected for first batch
Bengaluru: Five Karnataka women have been selected for the first batch of the Chevening-Karnataka Scholarships, a joint initiative by the UK and Karnataka govts to support women's higher education in the United Kingdom. Athena Rose Joseph, Chandana Anjinappa, Niharikaa Naresh, Shweata N Hegde, and Sushma Shyamsundar will pursue fully funded one-year master's programmes at top UK universities this Sept. The select scholars bring varied experience — from civil engineering and climate education to social impact and urban mobility. Launched in 2024 through an MoU signed at Belagavi, the scheme will fund five women graduates — preferably from govt colleges — every year for three years. Supriya Chawla, head of the Chevening Scholarship at the British High Commission in Bengaluru, said: "Over 60% of Chevening scholars in India come from tier-2 and tier-3 cities and marginalised communities. We're looking for applicants who can demonstrate leadership, collaboration, and a strong personal story." Chevening, started over 40 years ago, has enabled about 3,900 Indians to study in the UK. He will pursue a master's degree in Sports Management, Politics and International Development at the globally renowned Loughborough University. Currently serving as Deputy Director at SAI's Bengaluru Regional Centre under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sathishkumar's selection holds significance as India looks to host future editions of the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. The next Commonwealth Games are also scheduled to take place in the UK, which aligns perfectly with his academic focus. Hailing from Mela Ammanur, a small village near Thiruthuraipoondi in Tamil Nadu's Thiruvarur district, Sathishkumar is the son of retired headmaster Shanmugam and retired nurse Pakkiriyammal. His journey from rural roots to international recognition is a story of determination and public service. He joined SAI in 2017 and has since played critical roles in over 10 editions of the Khelo India Games. He was deputed as an official observer for India at major international sporting events, including the Paris Olympics and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
