Motorcyclist, 20, injured in collision with SUV
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 21-year-old woman was hospitalized after crashing her motorcycle into an SUV in the Valencia Park neighborhood on Friday, authorities said. The crash happened around 3 p.m. as the motorcyclist was exiting a driveway on the 300 block of 54th Street, according to the San Diego Police Department. She was riding a Yamaha YZF-R3 and attempted to make a left turn onto southbound 54th Street. San Diego ranks third worst US city to find a starter home: report Police say the rider failed to properly navigate the turn and struck the rear left corner of a Chevy Trailblazer that was stopped in traffic at a red light near Imperial Avenue. The SUV was driven by a 41-year-old man who was not injured in the crash. Emergency responders transported the motorcyclist to a local hospital for treatment of a fractured femur. Authorities confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the collision. SDPD's Traffic Division is handling the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Murder trial interrupted when two women fight in courthouse bathroom
Maurice Berry's murder trial was interrupted Thursday when two women loudly fought in a nearby bathroom. Berry, 22, of Hammond, is on trial in Lake Superior Court in Crown Point this week for killing a bystander, Javier 'Campa' Olvera, 49, at an East Chicago gas station and wounding Maurice Garrett — the intended target who had dated Berry's longtime on-and-off girlfriend after they broke up. As Det. James Nielsen was wrapping his testimony, a screaming match erupted outside the courtroom. The two women also had children with Berry. One was there to testify for both the prosecution and defense. A man, who said he was her brother, was trying to calm her down for several minutes. The other, who was pregnant, at one point appeared to yell she would fight and 'shoot' the other woman. Later, she apologized. Both women were arrested. They said the other attacked them. Police couldn't see from a video who started the brief fight in the bathroom. Both are expected to be charged with battery. Afterward, Judge Natalie Bokota rejected defense lawyer Susan Severtson's bid for a mistrial. East Chicago Police responded around 8 p.m. March 30, 2024, to a BP gas station, 4502 Indianapolis Blvd. Olvera was lying on the ground, shot multiple times. Surveillance video showed Berry pull up in a black Chevy Trailblazer, then go inside holding a concealed object in his hand. Olvera was already in line. The other man — who was later wounded — walked inside and 'looked at Berry.' On camera, the man and Berry appeared to exchange words. Berry shot at the man. Olvera dropped to the floor 'immediately.' mcolias@

Jury selection starts in East Chicago gas station slaying
Authorities allege Maurice Berry walked inside an East Chicago BP gas station in March 2024 to shoot his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend. Instead, he killed 49-year-old Javier 'Campa' Olvera, there to buy a few sodas. The other man he was targeting was shot in the arm. Berry, 22, of Hammond, is on trial this week. He is charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, operating a loaded machine gun, possession of a machine gun and misdemeanor theft. He has pleaded not guilty. Jury selection started Tuesday, with opening arguments expected in the afternoon. Last week, Berry rejected an offered plea deal for murder and a gun enhancement – for up to 85 years. Olvera dropped to the floor 'immediately.' Berry fled in the Trailblazer. The shots were fired within two seconds, leading police to believe the handgun was modified to fire automatically with a switch. The other man at first claimed Berry 'thought he was someone else,' before admitting their connection. He was there to buy a cigar, he said. The man said he had a gun but didn't fire it at Berry. The bullet broke the other man's upper arm with bullet fragments hitting his chest. Olvera worked for 18 years as a forklift driver at Hammond's Pacmoore Products, according to his obituary. He loved his family and his favorite sports teams — the Los Angeles Dodgers, Liverpool FC and Club America. He also loved riding bikes and Mexican music. The trial is before Judge Natalie Bokota with Deputy Prosecutors Tim Brown and Lindsay Latham assigned and defense lawyer Susan Severtson representing Berry. mcolias@
