Chhaava helps box office collections climb in the first six months of 2025

At a time when the Indian film industry is struggling to attract audiences back to the silver screens with new scripts, release formats, and franchise titles, this helped push India's box office collections up 14 per cent on a year-on-year basis to Rs 5,723 crore in the January–June period, with historical action film Chhaava, based on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, leading as the highest-grossing movie so far this year. With a steady flow of 17 films crossing the Rs 100 crore mark in the first six months, this year relied less on the big-ticket blockbusters, a report released by Ormax Media stated. Last year, in the same period, 10 films had crossed the Rs 100 crore mark. Vicky Kaushal starrer Chhaava minted Rs 693 crore at the domestic BO, followed by Telugu-language film Sankranthiki Vasthunam, which made Rs 222 crore at the domestic BO. Meanwhile, in the month of June, the gross collection crossed Rs 900 crore. While the film industry struggled to fill seats in theatres, with only a few movie releases around the festive season that could attract crowds last year, a report released by Ormax Media anticipates this year will break records in terms of domestic BO collection with an overall collection of Rs 13,500 crore. 'Over the last two years, the January-June period has contributed 42 per cent to the annual box office. Applying that proportion, 2025 can be expected to close at Rs 13,500 crore, which will make it the best year ever at the India box office,' the report said. Some major movies expected to release are Kantara: Chapter 1, Avatar: Fire and Ash (third instalment in the Avatar series), War 2 (Yash Raj Films' spy universe film), and Coolie (Tamil-language action thriller starring Rajinikanth), among others. The year started strong with Pushpa 2: The Rule continuing its theatrical run in January, followed by Maddock Films-backed Chhaava in February and Raid 2 in May, revolving around an income tax officer played by Ajay Devgn. However, the industry faced a challenging time around April end and the start of May, in northern and western regions near the border, where cinemas in select cities had to cancel night shows due to geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan. Adding to this, some major releases like Akshay Kumar starrer Sky Force and Sikander, with Salman Khan as the lead actor, failed to perform as expected at the BO. Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh starrer Sitaare Zameen Par, which was exclusively released in theatres on June 20, came in third position in terms of gross domestic BO collection with Rs 201 crore. At Rs 200 crore of domestic BO collection was Housefull 5, a murder mystery comedy, which experimented with having two different endings of the film. The second part of the film, Raid, starring Riteish Deshmukh as a corrupt political figure, minted Rs 199 crore at the BO. In terms of linguistic contributions to the domestic BO, Hindi-language led with 40 per cent of the share in the January-June period, in line with last year. This was followed by Telugu-language and Tamil-language at 20 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively. On the back of several high-profile Hollywood releases, Hollywood's contribution to the domestic BO returned a double-digit share after three years, having last crossed the 10 per cent mark in 2022, the report added.

HC grants bail to 9 out of 123 accused in March 17 communal violence

NAGPUR: The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted bail to nine people accused of sedition, inciting unrest, rioting, large-scale arson, vandalism, and stone-pelting during a communal riot in Nagpur's Mahal area, beside the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters, on March 17. The protest demanded the removal of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. (AP) The violence had reportedly broken out following rumours that a religious 'chadar' bearing sacred inscriptions was burnt during a protest by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal. The protest demanded the removal of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. The demand to remove Aurangzeb's tomb had got a renewed push by hindutva groups following the release of 'Chhava' a film based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha empire, who was executed on the orders of Aurangzeb. Represented by a legal team with advocates Asif Qureshi, Shirrang Bhandarkar, Rafique Akbani, Adil Mohammad, Naveed Opai, and Adil Sheikh, the accused were granted bail after their advocates presented comprehensive factual and legal arguments and convinced justice Urmila Joshi-Phalke that their custody was no longer necessary. The court said, 'Considering the investigation is already completed and chargesheet is already filed, no purpose will be served by keeping applicants behind the bar.' The court added that the crime the accused had committed was against the society, but would be examined at the trial stage. The court said that bail is the rule and jail is the exception and granted bail to the accused on a personal bond of ₹ 1 lakh each. The accused were identified as Iqbal Ansari, Ejaz Ansari, Absar Ansari, Izhar Ansari, Ashfaqulla Aminullah, Muzzamil Ansari, Mohammad Rahil, Mohammad Yasir, and Iftekar Ansari. On March 17, widespread violence was reported from various parts of Nagpur, with mobs resorting to stone-pelting and arson. The injured included 33 police personnel, including three deputy commissioners of police (DCP). In response, 123 individuals, including 19 minors, were arrested, and most of them are still being investigated. In a related case, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) apologised to the high court for demolishing the two-storey residence of one of the people accused of rioting. NMC Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhury submitted an affidavit filed before the high court saying that the officials from the town planning and slum departments were unaware of the court's directive asking authorities to follow legal procedures before demolishing properties of people linked to communal violence cases. Chaudhary added that the municipal authority and executive engineers had not been aware of the guidelines either, and assured the court that such a lapse would not occur again.

Diana Penty on 'Chhaava': 'It's important to have both sides so that...'

The action drama, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj played by Vicky Kaushal became the highest-grossing Hindi film this year by earning over Rs. 600 crores at the box office in India after its release in February. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I think that's the case with all films where everybody has mixed opinions, some like it, some don't, to each their own. Like, I might not walk into a theatre and like the film that I'm watching, but that doesn't mean that it's not a good film or that it won't find its audience. 'It's important to have both sides so that actors or makers can do better the next time or change certain things. Every time I watch a film that I've done before, I'm like, I could have done that better. I'm a huge critic of my work,' Penty, whose latest work is ' Detective Sherdill ', told PTI in an interview. In ' Chhaava ', the 39-year-old actor played the role of Zinat-un-Nissa Begum, the second daughter of Emperor Aurangzeb. Penty said there were people who liked her portrayal and then there were some who didn't. 'But for me, what I liked about this character was that I had very little to say, and that gave me another challenge. There was so much power in the silences, and that's not easy to do. There are a lot of internal emotional thoughts and feelings that you want to show without words. It is not something I had done before. So, I looked at the positive side of it,' Penty, who has garnered praise for her work in films like 'Cocktail', 'Happy Bhag Jayegi', and 'Parmanu', said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The actor said she feels blessed to be part of a movie like 'Chhaava', which brought historical narratives to contemporary audiences. 'It was an interesting script from the point of view of just telling our history. We had learned it in high school, which was being represented on screen. It was something that I had to be part of. Working with Maddock, with whom I started my journey, is special, and I wanted to work with Laxman , sir,' she said. Penty has a slew of interesting projects in the pipeline, including web series 'Daring Partners', with Tamannaah Bhatia and Nakuul Mehta and a thriller drama film 'Section 84', co-starring Amitabh Bachchan, Nimrat Kaur and Abhishek Banerjee. The actor is most excited about her collaboration with Bachchan on 'Section 84' and described the experience of working with him as 'incredible.'
