55 Asiatic softshell turtles found dead in Solapur lake

Kolhapur: Fifty-five protected Asiatic softshell turtles were found dead in the lake at Siddheshwar temple in Solapur, alarming environmentalists and wildlife authorities. The incident comes just 10 days after hundreds of fish were found dead in the lake on April forest department recovered all 55 dead turtles, protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act (1972), after a six-hour operation and conducted post-mortem examinations to determine the cause of death. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board collected water samples for forensic Chheda, honorary wildlife conservator for Solapur, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. "It should be investigated if there is sewage mixing in the lake. The water may have been contaminated with harmful chemicals, or the turtles in the pond may have been infected with a disease. It cannot be said that the death of turtles is because of a lack of oxygen in the water," he forest officer Rohit Kumar Gangarde provided further details on the sequence of events: "Ten days ago, fish died in the lake, and now an incident of 55 Asiatic softshell turtles floating dead has come to light. Operation Sindoor PM Modi meets NSA, chiefs of armed forces amid spike in tensions with Pak India's air defence systems shoot down Pak drones in J&K, Punjab & Rajasthan Several airports in India to be closed till May 15 - check list A post-mortem was conducted on them at Siddheshwar Van Vihar. The cause of death of these turtles will be determined only after the post-mortem report arrives." An MPCB official had suggested that the algae growth in the lake might have led to depleted oxygen levels, contributing to the fish deaths. "Instructions have been given to the Solapur Municipal Corporation and the Devasthan authority for cleaning the lake," the official said. Environmentalists have long warned of pollution issues in Siddheshwar lake. Mukesh Raut, a well-known environmentalist from Solapur, said, "The water in this lake is highly polluted. It's not that fish have been found dead here for the first time. What action has been taken by MPCB, Solapur Municipal Corporation, and Sri Siddheshwar Devasthan Authority to prevent pollution?"

Democratic operative Sachin Chheda leaving state education department

State Democratic operative Sachin Chheda is leaving his job at the state Department of Public Instruction this week to return to political consulting. State Superintendent Jill Underly tapped Chheda to be executive director of the Office of the State Superintendent in 2023 after he played a major role in helping her get elected state superintendent in 2021. He denied the $138,000-a-year job was a reward for his campaign work. Underly, who is running for reelection, faces education consultant Brittany Kinser on April 1. In a Feb. 27 email to DPI employees shared with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Chheda said Underly "lives her values every day" and "we need that values-based leadership so much at this difficult moment." 'To be frank," Chheda continued in the email, "events in the larger world compel me to fully re-enter the political arena, which I cannot effectively do as a state employee." Chheda said he will help Underly's campaign in an informal capacity but will focus his work on issues, not candidates. "The Trump-Vance-Musk folks are actively destroying the American experiment, and I will be working through organizing and advocacy to restore America's promise," he said. Chheda has worked in state Democratic politics for years. He ran Gov. Tony Evers' 2013 campaign for state superintendent and Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson's campaign to become the city's first elected Black mayor in 2022. He also served as an adviser to Janet Protasiewicz's campaign when she ran for election to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 2023. WisPolitics first reported the news Monday. India: 4 million rupees stolen from Bollywood music composer Pritam's office

A theft of Rs4 million (Dh167,350) has been reported from the Mumbai office of Bollywood music composer Pritam Chakraborty, police said on Sunday. The incident came to light when the amount, which was kept in the office by Pritam's manager, went missing, said the Mumbai police. According to a complaint lodged at Malad Police Station by Pritam's manager, Vineet Chheda, the money was brought to the office a few days ago for work-related purposes. Chheda received the amount and kept it in the office, where an employee named Ashish Sayal was present at the time. The manager later left for Pritam's residence to get some documents signed. Upon returning, he discovered that the bag containing the money was missing. Other office staff informed him that Sayal had taken the bag, claiming he was going to deliver it to Pritam's house. However, when Chheda attempted to contact Sayal, his phone was switched off. He then visited Sayal's residence but found him missing. Following this, Chheda approached Malad Police Station and lodged a complaint.
