Anime moms who define motherhood: A heartfelt ‘Mother's Day' celebration
Credits: CBR Mothers in anime tend to be more complex figures who seamlessly juggle their many responsibilities while still being powerful, nurturing forces, loving their kids unconditionally. Whether care-giving to their children or rising up against inequities born from apartheid, these mothers are beacons of empowerment and tenderness. While many of these shows still offer the caring, more stereotypical mothers, plenty of others subvert that expectation and give us maternal figures who break the mold, becoming fantastic figures in their own right. Operation Sindoor Amid flare-up hours after thaw, officials say things will settle down with time Ceasefire on, but pressure stays: Key decisions by India against Pak that still stand 'Will work with India & Pakistan to seek solution on Kashmir': Trump Join us as we celebrate some of the anime world's most excellent moms, as they go above and beyond to fulfill the spirit of motherhood. 1. Kushina Uzumaki – Naruto Shippuden Credits: Crunchyroll Kushina Uzumaki, the mother of Naruto Uzumaki , the main character of one of manga and anime's most popular series, is hard, hot-headed, and loving, sacrificing everything for her son. While the circumstances surrounding her life are extremely tragic – especially her death at the hands of the Nine-Tails – Kushina leaves a lasting impact on Naruto. Her memories, her spirit, and her words stay with him every step of his journey. Kushina's nurturing side comes out in how she raises her son, and though she's lost, her love for him continues to guide his path forward. One of her most iconic roles in Naruto Shippuden, she provides maternal love but provides the will to carry on through hardship. Kushina's character is a wonderful example of how anime portrays the profound, eternal influence of a mother, even when threatened by evil forces. 2. Chi-Chi – Dragon Ball Z Credits: Crunchyroll Chi-Chi, the mother of Goten and Goku's wife, is easily misconstrued as a strict, evil, demanding woman. Under her hard-nosed surface is a loving mom who just wants what's best for her kids. The fact that Chi-Chi might want Goten and Gohan to study all night and be very disciplined does not change the fact that her spirit is one of love. With her peace of mind comes the desire to shield her family from the dangers that plague the Z Fighters on a near constant basis and giving them a well deserved happier, safer, more normal future. Chi-Chi's strength and loyalty to her family are apparent in Dragon Ball Z, where she acts as the emotional heart of the family unit, doing her best to still keep the family together and focused. Her tough-love approach to motherhood is grounded by her deep love for her children, which combine to make her one of the most lovable anime moms of all time. 3. Mitsuki Mutou – March Comes In Like a Lion Credits: Crunchyroll Mitsuki Mutou is a character that exemplifies the quiet, yet profound, force of motherhood. She's both the voice and influence of patience and understanding in March Comes in Like a Lion, delivering comforting emotional support to protagonist Rei Kiriyama as he comes to terms with the stormy environment that shaped him. While she is not Rei's biological mother, she provides him the warm affection and kindness he requires. Mitsuki's emotional maturity and patience make her an efficient maternal figure, as she supports Rei in the journey to understand and face his inner crisis and trauma. Her warmth and quiet fortitude show that motherhood is not about the big showy things, but about making room for new life and recovery to flourish. Mitsuki's care is an important reminder that often, the deepest expression of love is just being there for someone when they need you the most. 4. Carla Yeager – Attack on Titan Credits: Crunchyroll Carla's death hits all sorts of trifecta feels, as it happens in the very first episode and touches on multiple themes including motherhood, valor, and peace. Though her appearances are few and far between, Carla Yeager—the mother of protagonist Eren Yeager—is one of the more tragic figures in Attack on Titan. While her character's role is limited, her legacy and impact are felt deeply throughout the series. Carla's warmth, intelligence, and deep desire for her son's safety and happiness shine through, and her love for him, fierce and overwhelming, raises immediate questions of good and evil. Her death becomes a turning point in Eren's life, shaping his motivations and influencing his longings for freedom. Though Carla's screen time is minimal, her character has an undeniable impact, symbolizing the subtle sacrifices mothers make for their families. Through her unconditional love, her influence in creating and guiding Eren's life journey is extraordinary, and even after her death, her love continues to be an immensely powerful force. 5. Yuzuki Mitotsudaira – Kokoro Connect Credits: Crunchyroll Inko Midoriya, the mother of pro hero and former quirkless Deku, Izuku Midoriya , is one of the best examples of a heartwarming, supportive anime mom. Inko doesn't have superpowers of her own, but her love and support for her son are truly heroic. In spite of the oppressive obstacles Izuku must overcome, Inko is there to offer her son unconditional love and moral support. She is a constant source of support to him, uplifting him, bringing out the best in him, telling him he is worthy—even when he struggled or doubted his skills. Her sweetness and maternal spirit remind us that even with a world full of strong and mighty superheroes, the strength you get from your mom—and the way she lifts you up—really makes all the difference. Inko's commitment to her son's happiness and growth elevates her to one of the most popular moms in anime. 6. Purchase Sanae Furukawa – Clannad Credits: Crunchyroll Sanae Furukawa, the mother of Tomoya Okazaki's eventual love interest, Fuko Furukawa, a character that's both powerful and adorable, and perhaps the game's emotional backbone—the source of comic relief. Sanae just wants what's best for her daughter. Sanae is the ideal model of unconditional love — steadfastly supporting her daughter and Tomoya, even when the cards are stacked against them. Her warmth and unyielding commitment to her family easily establish her as the most indispensable character in Clannad. What truly sets Sanae apart is her remarkable skill at marrying the laugh-out-loud funny with the heartfelt earnestness. As the sun and shining spirit of the series, her devotion to her family makes her a beacon of hope and joy even in the darkest of situations, showing the world that a mother's love is the ultimate strength and blessing, always and forever.

Chi-Chi's revival: Mexican restaurant chain's first two locations revealed
Chi-Chi's, the Minnesota-born Mexican restaurant chain that vanished nearly 20 years ago, will begin its revival this year in the Twin Cities. Michael McDermott, the son of Chi-Chi's founder Marno McDermott, told Bring Me The News the first Chi-Chi's restaurants will open in St. Louis Park and Maple Grove. In both communities, McDermott plans to convert his Rojo Mexican Grill restaurants into Chi-Chi's. Sign up for our FOOD AND DRINK newsletters The St. Louis Park restaurant will open first, likely sometime this summer, and the opening of the Maple Grove restaurant is expected to follow in the fall. "We'll have most if not all the dishes that people remember," McDermott said, adding some signature dishes from Rojo and new dishes, such as birria tacos, are planned for the menu. His own Chi-Chi's go-to dish? The deep-fried red chili burro served enchilada-style. Hormel Foods, which sells Chi-Chi's brand salsas, tortillas and seasonings, announced in December it had reached a new trademark agreement with McDermott to pave the way for the restaurant chain's revival. Since then, it's been a whirlwind for McDermott who told Bring Me The News he did not expect such an overwhelming response to the news. "It literally went viral all over the country," he said. Among those reacting to the news are former Chi-Chi's franchisees who are interested in taking part in the comeback, he said. McDermott, who hopes to bring Chi-Chi's across the Midwest and East Coast to start, said he's working to get the franchise program launched as soon as possible. With a crowdfunding initiative on StartEngine, McDermott is looking to raise $3.5 million with equity given to investors who contribute $250 or more.
