Top 5 Fast-Food Meals Cheaper Than ‘We Have Food at Home'
Do you remember when getting fast food used to be an affordable treat and not a physically and financially shame-inducing spiral from which you'll never recover? No? After you come home from an exhausting day at work, the house is all out of order, your kids are clamoring to eat and you do not feel like cooking, the last thing you want to hear is, 'We have food at home.' Up Next: For You: Technically, what you have at home are probably ingredients, so it's best not to split hairs and save yourself a potential argument by suggesting to your tired spouse that they whip up a meal. Though not always the case, it still can be cheaper to eat out rather than going to the grocery store and playing tariff roulette with your produce. With that in mind, GOBankingRates put together a list of the top five fast-food meals that are cheaper than grocery shopping. Order up! McDonald's McChicken Value Meal Price: $5 You shouldn't play chicken with your monthly expenses, and with the McDonald's McChicken value meal, you get a McChicken, four-piece Chicken McNuggets, a small French fry and a small soft drink. When you factor in what you would spend on a chicken breast (plus more for nuggets), a head of lettuce, burger buns, mayonnaise, potatoes and soda at the grocery store, you probably started pulling into the drive-thru marked with Golden Arches before you finished reading this sentence. Explore More: Taco Bell's Classic Luxe Box Price: $5 If every time you go to the grocery store, you have to dip into your children's college fund, then maybe you should subsidize with the occasional Taco Tuesday for family night. For $20, you can feed your family of four with this Taco Bell combo meal, which includes a Beefy 5-Layer Burrito, crunchy taco, cinnamon twists and a medium fountain drink. Antacid is sold separately, but you may not need it to settle your system when you see how much money you saved. Wendy's Biggie Bag Price: $5 Gone may be the days of Wendy's locations having a sun room you could smoke in while you appreciated nature, but that doesn't mean they still don't offer some nostalgic pricing for some items on their menu. For just $5 a pop, you can get the Biggie Bag at Wendy's, which includes a choice of sandwich (Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, Double Stack or Crispy Chicken), 4-piece chicken nuggets, fries and a drink. Chipotle Burrito Price: $11.65 to $12.45 Chipotle may not be the first fast-food option you think of when it comes to savings, but when you factor in its portion sizes for baby-sized burritos or the many influencer cheat codes to multiply how many meals you can get out of your order, the savings do start to add up more than the additional cost of guacamole. You could even buy a burrito for dinner, eat half, and have the second half as a lunch leftover the next day. Of course, this would require more self-control than most people have when delicious food is in front of them. Subway's Meal of the Day Price: $9.99 And the number one fast-food meal that is cheaper than 'we have food at home' is … the Subway Meal of the Day! Why doesn't everyone just relax and enjoy a delicious Subway sandwich until the stock market figures itself out? You can set your calendar to Subway's Meal of the Day, which includes a daily rotating footlong sub option, a choice of a bag of chips or two cookies and a drink. This is an easily shareable meal too, as even Subway is shocked more people aren't splitting in this economy. McDonald's extends late-night service in US
McDonald's has announced an expansion of its late-night hours at a majority of its locations across the US, extending service until midnight or later. While most of the menu will be available during these extended hours, some items may be excluded based on franchisee decisions. The move comes as the fast-food giant announced its plans in early May 2025 to onboard up to 375,000 new employees for the summer. The company said in a statement shared with USA TODAY: "Our fans know there's no better way to end an unforgettable night than by feasting on your favourite McDonald's order. That's why, as the summer season kicks off, we're excited to offer up more ways for customers to satisfy their late-night cravings with more choices and expanded hours at more restaurants." The initiative excludes McDonald's restaurants in non-traditional locations such as airports and shopping malls. The brand is also planning a significant advertising campaign to promote the new late-night hours, which will feature a giveaway of 1,000 virtual gift cards for McCrispy Strips. The push for extended service hours is part of the company's strategy to improve sales after a 3.6% decline in US same-store sales in the first quarter of 2025 - its worst performance since the pandemic. Although the late-night menu will be slightly restricted, with items such as the Double Filet O' Fish not available for logistical reasons, franchisees will be required to offer staples such as the Quarter Pounder, Chicken McNuggets and McCrispy Strips. The decision to expand operating hours follows a period of reduced service that began in 2020, when McDonald's scaled back timings to help franchisees preserve cash during the Covid-19 pandemic. Other fast-food chains, such as Jack in the Box and Wendy's, have also extended their operating hours in recent years, seeking to reclaim business lost during Covid. Two other US restaurant chains, Noodles & Company and Darden Restaurants, have recently announced plans to close outlets. Noodles & Company plans to close up to 21 locations in 2025 as part of its strategy to optimise its restaurant portfolio and strengthen overall performance. Darden Restaurants closed 18 restaurants in May, including 15 units of its Bahama Breeze Island Grille concept. A ‘trick': Advertising expert lifts lid on McDonald's nugget claim
'It says right there made with 100% beef,' he continues, pointing to the packet of jerky he's eating, 'which is such a funny twist of words because it's made WITH 100% beef, not made OF 100% beef. 'With the McDonald's thing, it was that their chicken nuggets are made WITH 100% chicken. You know there's a lot of other stuff in there, and some of it might not BE 100% chicken, but it's made WITH 100% chicken.' 'You'll see it everywhere now. Subtle marketing trick,' he adds. 'Still tastes good'. The video quickly amassed hundreds of comments, with many expressing their shock over the revelation. 'Thank you for your public service,' one person wrote. 'I'm so tired of sleazy food company marketing,' someone else admitted. 'Once you work in marketing, your eyes are opened too much,' another replied. While Luke is American, the marketing approach isn't unique to the US, and a check of the McDonald's website reveals a similar story. Here, Chicken McNuggets are advertised as 'made with tender juicy 100% chicken breast'. But a look at the ingredient list shows it's not that simple. Chicken is indeed the first ingredient, but it's followed by water, flour (wheat, corn), canola oil, thickeners, starches, salt, mineral salts, spices, sunflower oil and dextrose, among others. In other words, while the nuggets are made with 100% chicken breast, they are not made of only chicken breast. In response to this, McDonald's shared a statement to saying that they're 'not in the business of misleading our customers'. 'When we say our famous Chicken McNuggets are made with 100% RSPCA-approved breast chicken, we mean it,' the statement read. 'The additional ingredients listed in our nutrition and allergen fact sheet go into the delicious marinade and coating. 'Being transparent about this is important, so that our customers can make informed decisions about their menu choices.' Businesses may be breaking the law if they engage in misleading or deceptive conduct. It makes no difference whether a business intends to mislead or not, but rather how the average consumer perceives the claim. The video highlights how carefully crafted language can be used in advertising to shape our understanding of what's really in our food.

14 States With the Most Expensive McDonald's Big Macs — And 3 Ways To Save
Since the 1940s, McDonald's has been known for providing consistent quality burgers. It's not gourmet fare, but diners can be fairly certain their food — whether it's a six-piece Chicken McNuggets meal or one of many burger variations — will taste the same across the states. But one thing that changes across state lines, and even from city to city, is the cost of a McDonald's meal. Find Out: Learn More: SavingSpot and CashNetUSA recently evaluated the average price of a Big Mac across all 50 states. Fourteen states charge an average of more than $6 for a Big Mac. Only three states — Texas, West Virginia and North Carolina — charge less than $5. In general, a Big Mac is going to set you back at least five bucks. Avoid the meals that offer less value and consider a meal deal for the whole family instead, if you're buying for multiple people. The McDonald's Chicken Pack feeds four or more people for just $30. It includes four McChicken sandwiches, 20 Chicken McNuggets and four fries. The Filet-O-Fish Family pack is also a great deal, with four sandwiches and two large fries for just $22.
