Moose collision kills man, 19, on Avalon Peninsula over weekend

Police are investigating a moose crash on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula that left a 19-year-old driver dead over the weekend. In a statement issued around noon on Monday, the RCMP said officers at its Whitbourne detachment received a report on Sunday morning of vehicle hitting a moose on Route 73, between Tilton and New Harbour Barrens. "The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, a 19-year-old man traveling for work, was pronounced deceased on scene by emergency medical services personnel," the RCMP said. The RCMP's traffic service collision analyst was called to the scene and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has also been brought on. Police say Sunday's crash was the province's third serious moose-vehicle collision in July, as well as its second fatality. The police are asking people to remain alert when driving and keep an eye out for moose when travelling along roadways.

Alberta RCMP warns of deadly counterfeit pills after death of 16-year-old in Edmonton area

Alberta RCMP has issued a province-wide warning about a potentially deadly supply of illegal opiates disguised as the anti-anxiety medication Xanax, after the death of a 16-year-old male in the Edmonton area. The teen's death is under investigation, and while the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will ultimately determine the cause, RCMP said the circumstances surrounding the case prompted the force to act swiftly. 'Some of this substance was located with the deceased,' said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, acting Alberta RCMP media relations manager. 'It's enough for RCMP to strongly believe that this was a strong potential cause of the death, and it's enough for us to have concern, to want to immediately communicate our concern.' RCMP believe the counterfeit pill involved in the teen's death was obtained in Edmonton, and that the drug 'could very quickly make its way across the province.' According to RCMP, the counterfeit pills mimic the appearance of Xanax but are grey instead of white, and they contain isotonitazene, a highly potent synthetic opioid which Savinkoff noted as 'a great concern' because it's 'very easy to overdose and cause death.' The pills are rectangular, have the word ONAX stamped on one side, and a vertical '2' on the other. Savinkoff said the public alert was necessary to prevent further harm. 'Parents, relatives, and other community members need to share this information as much as possible, and especially so now that school is out,' he said. The Alberta RCMP is urging the public to avoid taking any medication not prescribed by a licensed pharmacist. 'It's a given that drugs should not be obtained if you don't have a prescription. Drugs are illegal for a reason. They're dangerous,' Savinkoff said. 'And if you don't have a prescription and you don't know where the drug came from, there's always going to be risk.' Anyone who comes across pills matching the description or has information about replica prescriptions is asked to contact local police or call 310-RCMP. cnguyen@ Related Alberta Sheriffs shut down long-term drug house in south Edmonton Two arrested, $22,000 in illegal drugs seized after traffic stop: EPS You can also support our journalism by becoming a digital subscriber. 19-year-old arrested in connection to overdose death of 14-year-old

A 19-year-old St. John's man has been charged with manslaughter in connection to an overdose of youth from four months ago. The RNC said they arrested an unnamed man on Thursday, who was also charged with criminal negligence causing death, and the possession and trafficking of a controlled substance. It follows a 14-year-old boy who was found unresponsive in a Mount Pearl home in March. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled his death was the result of an overdose. "The RNC has since determined the youth ingested what he believed to be Xanax and Dilaudid but actually contained a deadly concoction of synthetic opioids," said the RNC's statement on Friday. Officers carried out a search warrant in May at the accused's home and seized a number of drugs including phenazolam, an often deadly benzodiazepine. The accused was released and is set to appear in provincial court at a later date. Newfoundland and Labrador's chief medical examiner Dr. Nash Denic said in April that more young people have been dying in "g ut-wrenching" overdose incidents this year, including a 14-year-old.

Police seek help in identifying woman who died in west Edmonton

Police are seeking help identifying a woman seen in this enhanced image who was found dead in west Edmonton on June 9, 2025. (Supplied) Edmonton police are seeking help in identifying a woman who was found dead in the area of 121 Avenue and 157 Street last month. The woman is described as being between 30 and 40-years-old, 5'11' and about 213 lbs with hazel eyes and light-medium brown hair. She was wearing black flared capri-length leggings, a yellow tank top and a purple hooded sweater when she was found on June 9. Police say the death is not considered suspicious at this time. While traditional investigative methods have been unsuccessful, an enhanced image of the woman was created in partnership with the Chief Medical Examiner and EPS' Digital Forensics Section and composite sketch artists team. 'It's the hope of the Missing Persons Unit that this image enhancement will help us identify this woman so we can bring a matter of resolution to her friends or family,' said Const. Josh Filion with the EPS' Missing Person Unit.
