ABVP members stage protest against BRTS as bus rams college compound wall
Some members of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) staged a protest against Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in Dharwad on Sunday, after one of the Chigari buses rammed a college compound wall.
A bus on its way from Hubballi Railway Station crashed into the compound wall of a private school near Vidyagiri. The bus suffered damage, while the driver and some commuters suffered minor injuries.
The protestors said that BRTS is compromising the safety of its commuters and the general public. They blocked the dedicated BRTS lane for nearly an hour. This caused a traffic jam for some time.
The bus suddenly veered off course, broke through the gate and rammed the compound wall, they said.
They said that another Chigari bus crashed into a building in Bairidevarkoppa a few months ago, causing injuries to some people. These buses are not properly maintained. Drivers are losing control of their bus, they said.
Some Chigari buses are in a poor condition. Many buses are worn out due to lack of maintenance, with malfunctioning air-conditioning, broken announcement systems, frequent breakdowns and other issues, they said.
Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar visited the spot and promised residents that he will hold talks with BRTS officials to ensure better maintenance and safer operations.
