Drones from Child PGI set to deliver blood to other hosps
Noida: Child PGI in the city is set to launch a pilot project to deliver blood bags to nearby hospitals using drone technology. The initiative, which already received approval from the Institutional Ethical Committee, aims to transport 1.5 to 2 litres of blood within a 100km radius using high-capacity drones. The project's primary objective is to significantly reduce the time taken to deliver blood, particularly to the two major Community Health Centres (CHCs) in Bhangel and Bisrakh, which depend on the Child PGI for emergency blood supply . Dr Satyam Arora from Child PGI said, "Pregnant women and children often require immediate blood transfusions. The current logistics can delay delivery. This project, if successful, will save crucial time and benefit patients directly." However, the project is not without its challenges. Officials pointed out that drone vibrations, temperature fluctuations — especially during peak summer — and the overall impact of the air transit on blood composition need to be thoroughly assessed. "The pilot phase will focus on testing these feasibility factors to ensure that the quality of blood remains uncompromised during transportation," Dr Arora added. To carry the targeted volume of up to 2 litres in one trip, the institute plans to use drones of military-grade capacity. "We are considering drones similar to those used in defence services, capable of handling such loads with precision and safety," an official said. According to the official, an estimated budget of Rs 40-50 lakh has been proposed for the project. However, the funding is pending approval from various govt bodies, including NITI Aayog and other research foundations. "The process is ongoing. If successful, this pilot could pave the way for a wider implementation of drone-based medical deliveries across the region, setting a precedent for advanced healthcare logistics in India," the official added.
