Walmart to bring fast-casual hot dog restaurant to 6 stores

Dive Brief: Walmart is welcoming a new restaurant chain into its lineup of in-store restaurant partners: hot dog franchise Wienerschnitzel, according to a Wednesday announcement. The partnership will start with restaurants in six Walmart locations in six Western states, each owned and operated by a local franchisee. Walmart has ambitiously grown its partnerships with quick-service restaurants as it looks to expand its in-store dining offerings. Dive Insight: Food offerings are becoming more integral to Walmart's offerings as the retailer continues to expand not only its grocery assortment but its in-store, quick-service dining options as well. The upcoming restaurants are slated to open by the fall in Walmart stores in Puyallup, Washington; Alamogordo, New Mexico; Tempe, Arizona; Reno, Nevada; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Bakersfield, California. The in-store restaurants will offer Wienerschnitzel's full menu, which includes the chain's Chili Cheese Dog, chili cheese fries, jalapeño poppers and Tastee Freez soft serve desserts, according to the announcement. The hot dog franchise noted that entering Walmart stores will help with its expansion into non-traditional venues. Wienerschnitzel currently has 340 franchised locations across 13 states and more than 50 units in various stages of development, according to the announcement. Walmart's tie-up with the hot dog franchise is the latest in a string of fast-casual dining partnerships the retailer has established to help bring made-to-order meal options to its shoppers. In March, Nozzleman Pizza Co. announced its first Walmart location in Nevada, the first of 17 it plans to open this year in locations retailer operates. Last year, Walmart added options including hoagies, poke and barbecue to its in-store restaurant roster. Copyright 2025 Industry Dive. All rights reserved.

Walmart Is Opening a Fan-Favorite Hot Dog Chain in Several of Its Stores

Founded in 1961 by John Galardi, Wienerschnitzel began as a single-family-owned hot dog stand in Southern California and has since grown to become the 'world's largest hot dog franchise.' In addition to the 358 locations of the fast-food restaurant today, Wienerschnitzel is now expanding even further with the help of the largest grocery store in the United States. On May 28, Wienerschnitzel announced plans to open six restaurant locations inside Walmart stores by fall 2025. These new openings will be situated in six cities across various states: Alamogordo, New Mexico; Bakersfield, California; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Reno, Nevada; Tempe, Arizona; and Puyallup, Washington. This is far from the first time Walmart has partnered with prominent American fast food chains. The retailer has previously housed fan-favorite restaurants like Burger King, McDonald's, Taco Bell, and Subway in its stores. Related: Stock These 5 Frozen Walmart Staples for Easy, Affordable Weeknight Dinners In a press release from Wienerschnitzel surrounding the new announcement, Shak Turner, the director of franchise expansion for the brand, says, "Wienerschnitzel has spent decades building a strong reputation, especially on the West Coast, and this expansion into Walmart stores signifies a new era of growth for the brand.' The new Wienerschnitzels in all six states will offer the chain's full menu for Walmart shoppers. As a restaurant renowned for its hot dogs, some menu highlights feature offerings like the classic Chili Cheese Dog, Junkyard Dog (topped with french fries, chili sauce, grilled onions, American cheese, and French's mustard), and Texas BBQ Dog (topped with bacon, barbecue sauce, grilled onions, and shredded cheddar), along with burgers, chili cheese fries, jalapeño poppers, and Tastee Freez soft serve desserts, including shakes that are beloved for their thick texture. Additionally, the menu features three vegetarian hot dog options — including Field Roast's plant-based Signature Stadium Dog — such as the Barbeque Veggie Dog (topped with barbecue sauce, a pickle spear, and chopped onions) and the Chicago Veggie Dog (topped with tomato, chopped onions, a pickle spear, relish, sport peppers, yellow mustard, and celery salt). Wienerschnitzel locations currently span 13 states. Ted Milburn, the brand's director of franchise development, explains in the press release that 'Growing inside these Walmart locations significantly expands our reach and opens the door for franchisees to tap into high-traffic locations with built-in demand." Related: We Tested Every Major Hot Dog Brand — These Are Our Favorites Milburn also emphasizes that non-traditional locations, like this one, help introduce the franchise to new customers and 'reinforce the brand's relevance in today's evolving retail and dining landscape.' If you're a fan of hot dogs or just love making a pit stop for a meal while grocery shopping, watch for these six new Wienerschnitzel locations and hope for more to come. Wienerschnitzel to open six restaurants in Walmart US stores

US-based hot dog franchise Wienerschnitzel has revealed plans to extend its presence into Walmart stores - a significant step in its non-traditional expansion strategy. The move will see the opening of six new restaurants within Walmart locations by autumn 2025. The selected Walmart stores are in Alamogordo, New Mexico; Bakersfield, California; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Puyallup, Washington; Reno, Nevada and Tempe, Arizona. The outlets will be operated by local franchisees, reflecting the brand's focus on leveraging high-calibre partnerships to bolster its expansion. Wienerschnitzel's growth within Walmart stores is complemented by the appointment of Shak Turner as the new director of franchise expansion. Turner joined in March 2025 and has a pivotal role in driving the brand's growth across non-traditional formats and attracting top-tier multi-unit franchise candidates. Turner stated: "Wienerschnitzel has spent decades building a strong reputation, especially on the West Coast, and this expansion into Walmart stores signifies a new era of growth for the brand. "It's clear Wienerschnitzel's unique concept fills a specific void for multi-brand franchisees looking to grow their portfolios, which is one of the elements that attracted me to the brand initially. I'm thrilled to join this amazing team and play a part in spearheading initiatives and new partnerships, which will no doubt catapult the brand to new markets." Wienerschnitzel is exploring opportunities in diverse high-traffic venues such as airports, military bases, theme parks, food courts and convenience stores. These initiatives are part of the brand's ongoing efforts to adapt and expand its business model to new and varied environments. Customers visiting the new Wienerschnitzel locations at Walmart can expect the full menu, including favourites such as the Chili Cheese Dog and Tastee Freez soft serve desserts. Wienerschnitzel currently operates 340 franchised locations across 13 states, with 50 more units in various stages of development. The brand's expansion efforts are further supported by its partnership in March 2025 with Presto Phoenix, an AI-driven solutions provider, to implement voice AI ordering technology in its drive-through locations.
