SMS first govt hosp to start Car-T cell therapy for cancer

Jaipur: SMS Hospital has established a department for treatment of blood-related cancers and other blood disorders. The department will offer advanced Car-T cell therapy to cancer patients. This innovative therapy has so far been administered to only a few patients in the state by private hospitals. SMS Hospital will be the first govt hospital to have established a separate department for clinical haematology (DCH). Car-T cell therapy is the country's first indigenous gene therapy, also known as Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy. It is a form of treatment based on genetic modifications and was developed in India at just a tenth of the cost compared to its price abroad. "We have all the resources available at our DCH for performing Car-T. It is an advanced therapy for treatment of cancer patients," said Dr Vishnu Sharma, head of the DCH department. He added that the department will provide treatment for all kinds of haematological cancers, and disorders from bleeding disorders to bone marrow transplant. The department has 20 beds for patients. "The department has been established at SMS Hospital, but it will be shifted to the state cancer institute later," Dr Sharma said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Legendary Cars from the Past Till now, only private hospitals in Rajasthan performed Car-T cell therapy. An 82-year-old woman from Jaipur holds the distinction of being the eldest recipient of Car-T cell therapy in the country. "The woman suffered from high-grade lymphoma, a cancer of lymph nodes. She was not responding to chemotherapy and other conventional treatments, due to which her lymphoma relapsed. We collected her T-cells and sent them to Mumbai to the company that manufactures Car-T cells. The patient also reached Mumbai, where she was infused with the Car-T cell almost a year ago," said Dr Hemant Malhotra, director of oncology services at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital. Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital also performed Car-T cell therapy in Dec last year.

The Alarm frontman Mike Peters loses battle with cancer aged 66

The Alarm frontman Mike Peters has died after a lengthy battle with blood cancer. The 66-year-old musician was diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia more than three decades ago. In September 2024, he was in remission. However, the following month, he found out he had Richter syndrome – an aggressive form of lymphoma – and began a treatment called Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy (CART). He shared in January: "My white lymphocytes were harvested in December. Those were then sent to a laboratory where each blood cell was re-engineered by scientists and then targeted to seek and destroy the Richter's syndrome." Mike had been due to head out on a 50-date tour before being dealt the huge blow. He said: "It was devastating because it all happened in an instant. There was no chance to even think about it. "Untreated I probably had two months to live and to then have to think about stopping the tour, communicating all that to the fans, trying to hold the family together while we are dealing with this devastation, it was intense." The Welsh musician was known for his campaigning to raise awareness of cancer through the Love Hope Strength Foundation, which he founded with his wife, Jules, 58. A spokesperson for the charity confirmed the sad news of Mike's death on April 28, at the age of 66. The Alarm formed in 1981 in Rhyl, Wales. They were originally called The Toilets and made punk rock, before seguing into the popular new wave sound of the era. Their biggest hit was '68 Guns', which reached No. 17 on the UK Singles Chart in 1983. The Alarm were the support act for huge names, including U2 and Bob Dylan. Their 1984 debut studio album, 'Declaration', made it to No. 6 in the UK. Together, they sold more than five million albums. Mike also had a solo career and was vocalist for Big Country. He is survived by his wife and their sons Dylan, 20, and Evan, 18.
