CPC delegation visits Laos to strengthen ties

VIENTIANE: Chen Zhou, deputy head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, led a CPC delegation to visit Laos from Wednesday (July 16) to Friday (July 18) at the invitation of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. During the visit, Chen met with Thongloun Sisoulith, general secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee and Lao president, and Bounleua Phandanouvong, acting head of the LPRP Central Committee's Commission for External Relations. He also held brief discussions with leaders from various Lao Party and government departments. The two sides exchanged views on the relations between the two parties and the two countries, as well as issues of common concern. They agreed to follow the important consensus reached by the top leaders of both parties and countries, enhance strategic mutual trust, deepen interparty exchanges, expand pragmatic cooperation, promote the steady and long-term development of the China-Laos community with a shared future, and make positive contributions to maintaining regional peace and development. - Xinhua

HONG KONG: Laos actively participates in the establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed), takes the lead in signing the convention and makes significant contributions, for which the Chinese side expresses appreciation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said here on Friday (May 30). Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with Lao Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, who participated in the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the IOMed in Hong Kong, south China. The IOMed explores new pathways and creates a new platform for resolving international disputes, and maintaining peace and stability, Wang said, expressing the confidence that Laos will continue to play an active role in promoting the early entry into force of the convention and facilitating the effective operation of the IOMed. When discussing the relationship between China and Laos, Wang said China is willing to work with Laos, guided by the implementation of the important consensus reached by the top leaders of both parties and countries, to deepen strategic cooperation, cultivate collaborative momentum, strengthen bilateral and multilateral coordination, jointly resist unilateral bullying actions, uphold multilateralism and international fairness and justice, and promote the development of the China-Laos community with a shared future to a higher level. For his part, Saleumxay said that mediation reflects the cultural characteristics of Asia and that developing countries are more inclined to resolve disputes through mediation. He believes that the IOMed will attract more countries to join and play an important role in promoting regional peace and security. The Lao leader also expressed gratitude for China's long-standing and steadfast support, emphasising the importance of strengthening exchanges at all levels, advancing cooperation projects such as the Laos-China-Thailand railway, and achieving more progress in the construction of the Laos-China community with a shared future. - Xinhua

VIENTIANE: The Bank of China (Hong Kong) Vientiane Branch hosted a seminar on the internationalisation of the Chinese currency renminbi (RMB), focusing on new opportunities and developments in China-Laos economic and trade cooperation amid the currency's growing international use. The seminar was held on Friday (April 25) and attended by over 250 representatives from the Lao government, the financial industry and businesses from both Laos and China. Speaking at the opening ceremony, acting governor of the Lao central bank Vathana Dalaloy said bilateral trade between Laos and China has been steadily increasing, alongside the continued growth of cross-border RMB settlements. She emphasised that the Lao central bank would continue to strengthen its financial cooperation with China, particularly focusing on policy discussions, digital payments, and currency exchange, with the aim of advancing Laos-China financial ties to new heights. Also speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Laos Fang Hong highlighted the positive momentum behind the internationalisation of the RMB. She noted that Laos has emerged as both a strong promoter and a key beneficiary of this trend, thanks to its strategic geographic location and growing potential for cooperation. Fang encouraged both countries to seize this historic opportunity to deepen financial collaboration and expand the use of the RMB in bilateral trade and economic activities. In his speech, Deputy Chief Executive of the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Wang Huabin stated that enhanced financial cooperation between China and Laos would further expand bilateral trade. He noted that this partnership would provide comprehensive financial support for key projects in Laos and facilitate the activities of businesses and individuals from both countries. The seminar also featured discussions by experts on the internationalisation of the RMB, China-ASEAN economic and financial cooperation, the potential for RMB use in ASEAN countries, and the development and implications of digital currencies. - Xinhua
