Turkish firm joins forces with China Railway for Middle Corridor
Agencies Turkish international railway logistics firm Pasifik Eurasia and Chinese state freight and railroad corporation, China Railway, are joining forces to revitalize railway transportation on the Middle Corridor after a diplomatic-level meeting in Beijing on May 23. Pasifik Holding Chairperson Fatih Erdoğan and China Railway General Manager Song Xiude met during the visit of Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu to parties involved in the meeting agreed to cooperate to seize the true potential the Middle Corridor route can offer, a staple of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Erdoğan told Anadolu Agency (AA) that Pasifik Eurasia, established in 2019, is a leading company operating Turkeye's international railway logistics, accounting for 95% of the transportation on the Baku-Tbilis-Kars (BTK) railway. He said Pasifik Eurasia played a key role in reviving the line after it opened in 2017 but was left said that Pasifik Eurasia has had the Middle Corridor vision in mind during its activities in China, with the belief that the transportation route will someday generate a large business volume, and Turkeye can realize its strategic geographical location to become a logistics center, contributing to the country's private sector entrepreneurship. Erdoğan mentioned that the firm has achieved many firsts between Turkeye and China, such as the first block train from China to Turkeye, the first export train from Turkeye to China and the first block train between China and Europe through the Middle said the pandemic, which occurred at a time when these efforts were going to result in more success, halted he said that China has made significant investments in rail transportation as part of its Belt and Road Initiative's land component with substantial subsidies, especially in the Eurasian Northern Corridor, running through China, Russia and noted that some 20,000 freight trains use the route annually and around 2 million TEU containers are transported via the line. He said the number of trains traveling on the Middle Corridor route is only 300 per year, indicating more potential may be on the horizon. Erdoğan highlighted that the Middle Corridor should be Turkeye's project to bring in a large-scale traffic on the route, 'with Turkeye on one side and China on the other.' 'The Belt and Road Initiative is China's project, and the Middle Corridor should be Turkeye's project, because the line can be like the Eurasian Northern Corridor only through Turkeye,' he mentioned that the firm contacted Turkish officials and received support from Central Asian countries along the route and Chinese authorities, agencies and private sector representatives. Erdoğan said that the head and officials of China Railway visited Turkeye last week and a subsequent meeting was held in Beijing.

China's airlines raise alarm as travellers ditch planes for bullet trains
More passengers shuttling between China's two biggest cities are choosing to hop on a bullet train rather than a flight, as airlines struggle to match the convenience offered by the country's ultra-modern high-speed rail network. The shift to rail has become so pronounced on the busy Beijing-Shanghai route that China's air travel industry has warned its market is being 'eroded', with airlines scrambling to lure back customers with cheaper tickets and free limousine services. Passengers made more than 52 million trips by train between Beijing and Shanghai last year, while only about 8.6 million people took a flight between the two cities, according to civil aviation platform Hangban Guanjia. Business travellers especially are increasingly viewing high-speed rail as a superior option, experts said, with China Railway's fastest service now able to travel the 1,300-kilometer route in just over four hours. Passengers also prize the flexibility and convenience offered by rail travel, as China Railway's modern cabins offer stable internet access, charging points and large seats, they added. Robust demand has turned the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway into a cash cow for the state-owned rail operator, despite the line suffering a string of teething problems during its first years of operation.

China to launch ‘silver trains' aimed at elderly tourists to boost economy
China is set to launch a series of 'silver trains' aimed at elderly tourists in a bid to capitalise on the world's fastest-ageing population. New guidance has been released by nine governmental departments, including the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, China State Railway Group Company and the Ministry of Commerce, which outlines plans to target senior travellers with ample leisure time who are able to travel outside of peak periods, according to China Daily. "With the expansion of the elderly population and their growing demand for cultural and tourism consumption, the growth potential of tourist trains for seniors is huge," Kong Dejun, a director at the Ministry of Commerce, said. China Railways is set to recondition existing facilities on board existing tourist trains to make them suitable for senior passengers. This includes optimising the size and layout of berths, seats and restrooms to make them more comfortable for older travellers. Handrails, oxygen cylinders, emergency call buttons and first aid equipment will also be installed. In 2024, China operated a total of 1,860 tourist trains nationwide, a record high – and a figure that jumped nearly 50 per cent since 2019, China Railway revealed. "The main operation directions of these trains are concentrated in popular tourist destinations and routes such as the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, as well as Yunnan and Heilongjiang provinces,' Zhu Wenzhong, deputy director of the passenger transportation department at China Railway, said. 'Last year, the tourist trains handled more than one million passenger trips,' he added. China aims to launch more than 100 'high-quality railway routes for elderly tourism' by 2027, with more than 2,500 trains expected to operate each year. "The launch of the special tourist trains for seniors represents a measure to further improve elderly friendly facilities and services and improve the wellbeing of the greying demographic, while the trains will also provide services for consumers of all age groups," added Mr Dejun. One in five Chinese people were over the age of 60 by the end of 2022, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, a figure shaped by a one-child policy that restricted birth rates for decades. This figure is expected to grow in coming years. Under new rules,
