
Turkish firm joins forces with China Railway for Middle Corridor

Turkish international railway logistics firm Pasifik Eurasia and Chinese state freight and railroad corporation, China Railway, are joining forces to revitalize railway transportation on the Middle Corridor after a diplomatic-level meeting in Beijing on May 23.
Pasifik Holding Chairperson Fatih Erdoğan and China Railway General Manager Song Xiude met during the visit of Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu to China.The parties involved in the meeting agreed to cooperate to seize the true potential the Middle Corridor route can offer, a staple of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Erdoğan told Anadolu Agency (AA) that Pasifik Eurasia, established in 2019, is a leading company operating Turkeye's international railway logistics, accounting for 95% of the transportation on the Baku-Tbilis-Kars (BTK) railway.
He said Pasifik Eurasia played a key role in reviving the line after it opened in 2017 but was left unused.He said that Pasifik Eurasia has had the Middle Corridor vision in mind during its activities in China, with the belief that the transportation route will someday generate a large business volume, and Turkeye can realize its strategic geographical location to become a logistics center, contributing to the country's private sector entrepreneurship.
Erdoğan mentioned that the firm has achieved many firsts between Turkeye and China, such as the first block train from China to Turkeye, the first export train from Turkeye to China and the first block train between China and Europe through the Middle Corridor.He said the pandemic, which occurred at a time when these efforts were going to result in more success, halted operations.Moreover, he said that China has made significant investments in rail transportation as part of its Belt and Road Initiative's land component with substantial subsidies, especially in the Eurasian Northern Corridor, running through China, Russia and Europe.He noted that some 20,000 freight trains use the route annually and around 2 million TEU containers are transported via the line. He said the number of trains traveling on the Middle Corridor route is only 300 per year, indicating more potential may be on the horizon.
Erdoğan highlighted that the Middle Corridor should be Turkeye's project to bring in a large-scale traffic on the route, 'with Turkeye on one side and China on the other.' 'The Belt and Road Initiative is China's project, and the Middle Corridor should be Turkeye's project, because the line can be like the Eurasian Northern Corridor only through Turkeye,' he said.He mentioned that the firm contacted Turkish officials and received support from Central Asian countries along the route and Chinese authorities, agencies and private sector representatives.
Erdoğan said that the head and officials of China Railway visited Turkeye last week and a subsequent meeting was held in Beijing.

Turkey bank margins to rise
Agencies Turkey's banking sector may see a gradual recovery in net interest margins by the end of the year, aided by anticipated monetary easing from the country's central bank, according to Fitch Ratings. Ahmet Emre Kılınç, director of banks at Fitch, said on Tuesday that the credit ratings agency now projects the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) to lower its benchmark interest rate to 33% by year-end. 'As a result, we expect an improvement in banks' net interest margins, although this recovery will be somewhat more modest compared to our initial projections at the beginning of the year,' Kılınç told Anadolu Agency (AA). The CBRT pivoted to raising its key policy rate by 350 basis points in April to 46% and pushed the overnight lending rate to 49% after Turkish assets and the lira fell sharply after Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu was jailed pending trial over graft charges. Before that, the bank had begun an easing cycle and gradually cut its one-week repo rate to 42.5% in March as inflation fell from the level of more than 75% that it reached in May 2024. A sharper-than-anticipated slowdown in annual inflation to 35.41% has reignited speculation that the bank could resume rate cuts as early as this month. The outlook for Turkish banks is shaped by domestic market developments and the impact of global customs tariffs, Kılınç said. Before March, he noted, there was an expectation that continued rate cuts would support banks' interest margins, but this has been somewhat delayed due to volatility in the domestic market. While the CBRT has signaled a cautious approach, analysts say the decline in inflation has provided some additional room for the bank to resume the rate cuts. Any shift, however, will likely be contingent on whether the overnight lending rate converges with the policy rate in the coming weeks. The CBRT's next monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting is scheduled for June 19, followed by another on July 24. Last month, the bank kept its inflation forecast steady in its quarterly report, saying upward and downward risks balance out. Governor Fatih Karahan said the bank is ready to tighten policy if inflation worsens.

Turkish Otokar makes 1st shipment of armoured vehicles to Romania
Agencies Turkish defense giant Otokar has made the first shipment of its COBRA II 4x4 vehicles to Romania as part of Turkey's largest single-item armored land vehicle export contract, a report by Anadolu Agency (AA) said on Tuesday. Otokar, which signed a contract last year for the supply of 1,059 COBRA II 4x4 armoured vehicles for the needs of the Romanian Ministry of Defence, continues to work intensively at its facilities in northwestern Sakarya province due to its ambitious delivery schedule. The report said that the first COBRA II vehicles produced in Turkey had arrived in Romania. As part of the supply contract, the production of the first 278 COBRA IIs to be manufactured in Turkey will be carried out at the Sakarya factory. The subsystems to be supplied by local manufacturers for these vehicles will be integrated in Romania. Moreover, within the scope of the export contract, COBRA II vehicles will be produced abroad for the first time in the future. Otokar recently took an important step in line with its commitments to Romania by signing an agreement with Automecanica S.A., one of the country's leading defence industry companies, to establish a joint venture company in Romania to carry out local production and develop defence industry capabilities in the country. The first vehicle delivery to the Romanian Ministry of Defence will begin in the last quarter of 2025. Within the scope of the project, COBRA II variants suitable for different missions will be produced in line with Romania's needs and demands. The contract covers 10 different variants consisting of a personnel carrier, reconnaissance vehicle, personnel carrier-remote controlled weapon system, anti-tank vehicle, anti-tank command vehicle, 120 mm mortar carrier, 81 mm mortar carrier, engineering vehicle, CBRN reconnaissance vehicle and ambulance. Romania will be the ninth country in Europe to use Otokar's defence industry solutions.

China's May export growth slows as tariffs take toll
Agencies China's export growth slowed down to a three-month low in May, official data showed on Monday, while shipments to the U.S. also plunged due to tariffs. Coupled with factory-gate deflation, which deepened to its worst level in two years, it pointed the pressure remained high on the world's second-largest economy on both the domestic and external fronts. U.S. President Donald Trump's global trade war and the swings in Sino-U.S. trade ties have in the past two months sent Chinese exporters, along with their business partners across the Pacific, on a roller-coaster ride and hobbled world growth. Underscoring the U.S. tariff impact on shipments, customs data showed that China's exports to the U.S. plunged 34.5% year-over-year in May in value terms, the sharpest drop since February 2020, when the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic upended global trade. Total exports from the Asian economic giant expanded 4.8% year-over-year in value terms last month, slowing from the 8.1% jump in April and missing the 5.0% growth expected in a Reuters poll, customs data showed on Monday, despite a lowering of U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods which had taken effect in early April. 'It's likely that the May data continued to be weighed down by the peak tariff period,' said Lynn Song, chief economist for Greater China at ING. Song said there was still front-loading of shipments due to the tariff risks, while acceleration of sales to regions other than the United States helped to underpin China's dropped 3.4% year-over-year, deepening from the 0.2% decline in April and worse than the 0.9% downturn expected in the Reuters poll. Exports had surged 12.4% year-over-year and 8.1% in March and April, respectively, as factories rushed shipments to the U.S. and other overseas manufacturers to avoid Trump's hefty levies on China and the rest of the world. While exporters in China found some respite in May as Beijing and Washington agreed to suspend most of their levies for 90 days, tensions between the world's two largest economies remain high and negotiations are underway over issues ranging from China's rare earths controls to Taiwan. Trade representatives from China and the U.S. are meeting in London on Monday to resume talks after a phone call between their top leaders on Thursday. China's imports from the U.S. also lost further ground, dropping 18.1% from a 13.8% slide in Huang, economist at Capital Economics, expects the slowdown in exports growth to 'partially reverse this month, as it reflects the drop in U.S. orders before the trade truce,' but cautions that shipments will be knocked again by year-end due to elevated tariff levels. China's exports of rare earths jumped sharply in May despite export restrictions on certain types of rare earth products causing plant closures across the global auto supply latest figures do not distinguish between the 17 rare earth elements and related products, some of which are not subject to restrictions. A clearer picture of the impact of the curbs on exports will only be available when more detailed data is released on June 20. China's May trade surplus came in at $103.22 billion, up from the $96.18 billion the previous month.
