Chinese woman, 26, missing in Australia after being swept away by floodwaters
A Chinese woman remains missing after being swept away by floodwaters in southeastern Australia. China's Consulate General in Sydney had confirmed the news, while urging local authorities to 'make every effort' to save her, Chinese state media reported on Sunday. The 26-year-old was one of two Chinese women caught up in floods in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales (NSW) state on Saturday evening. The other woman, 27, was rescued, China's state news agency Xinhua reported, citing the consulate. The mission said that it had contacted local police multiple times, urging them to make every possible effort and deploy maximum resources in the search for the missing person, the report said. The NSW Police Force said in a statement on Sunday that emergency services had been called back to the area on Saturday evening after receiving reports that a car was trapped in floodwaters. Police said the two women had tried to drive through floodwaters but became stranded. As they tried to exit the small car, the driver was rescued uninjured but her passenger was swept away.

Man arrested in Strathfield driving black ‘Chinese Police' sedan with firearms, ammunition in boot
You don't see this one every day. Police in Sydney's inner west made a peculiar arrest on Friday after stopping a 21-year-old man driving a black sedan in Strathfield. Burwood Highway Patrol officers were conducting routine patrols at around 2:50pm on 18 July when they noticed a vehicle bearing 'Chinese Police' markings. On inspection of the vehicle, they found numerous 'Chinese Police' insignia affixed to the passenger door panels and the bonnet. The driver was charged after officers allegedly found firearms and ammunition in the boot. Upon questioning, the man allegedly produced a fake document claiming the vehicle was being used to transport Chinese consulate officials. During a search of the car, officers located a box containing 48 live rounds of ammunition in the trunk. The man, who holds an active firearms licence, allegedly told police he believed it was 'the best place to store his ammunition'. Officers seized the ammunition along with other items suspected of being used to impersonate police. They later gained access to the man's Baulkham Hills residence, where they located two gel blaster firearms, which were also seized. His registered firearms were taken pending a review of his firearms licence. The man was charged with multiple offences, including use display emergency services organisation insignia, driving motor vehicle with unlawful police insignia and possession of an unauthorised prohibited firearm. He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Burwood Local Court on Tuesday, 22 July 2025. At a glance, the man's black sedan looked to be legitimate, if not for the misspelt 'POILCE' emblazoned on his bonnet.

NSW Police spotted the Mercedes S-Class in Strathfield, in the city's inner west, at about 2.50pm on Friday. The vehicle had police insignia on the doors and bonnet with the word 'police' displayed in Mandarin and the incorrect spelling of 'poilce' in English. The driver, 21, allegedly presented a forged document to officers, claiming the vehicle was used to transport Chinese consulate officials. Officers searched the car and allegedly found a box containing 48 live rounds of ammunition in the boot. The driver allegedly claimed the boot was the 'best place' to store the ammunition and that he had a valid firearms licence and two guns secured at his home. Police seized the ammunition and other items allegedly used to impersonate police. At a Baulkham Hills home, officers later found two gel-blasters and seized the man's registered firearms pending a review of his licence. China urges nationals in Los Angeles to be ‘highly vigilant' amid violent ICE protests
China has urged its citizens in the Los Angeles area to stay vigilant and prioritise their personal safety amid 'ongoing law enforcement actions ' targeting immigration-related protests in California's largest city. Advertisement In a safety advisory issued on Monday, the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles reminded Chinese citizens in the area 'to closely monitor official announcements and media reports, stay highly vigilant, strengthen safety precautions, avoid gathering sites, crowded areas, or locations with poor public security'. It also advised against 'going out at night or traveling alone'. Around 300 California National Guard troops arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday and were deployed around government buildings on the third day of a stand-off with demonstrators protesting President Trump's immigration raids targeting undocumented migrants. The troops were part of a larger force mobilised to support federal law enforcement amid escalating clashes between protesters and immigration agents.
