Worker at ECRL site died of heart attack, not from fall, say cops

Pasir Puteh police chief Zaizul Rizal Zakaria said the Chinese national died while he was pulling cables near the train track. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The death of a construction worker at the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project site in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, on Wednesday was due to a heart attack and not because he fell from a train carriage, say police. Pasir Puteh police chief Zaizul Rizal Zakaria said the Chinese national died while he was pulling cables near the train track, Sinar Harian reported. 'The victim died due to a heart attack, not due to a fall from the train as alleged on social media,' he was quoted as saying. Zaizul said a post-mortem carried out on the victim found no elements of foul play. A video shared widely on social media had alleged that a ECRL worker died after falling from a train.

Student flees to China after being charged with voting illegally in Michigan

A Chinese national who was charged with voting illegally in Michigan last fall has fled the US, federal authorities said on Friday. Advertisement The man, who is not a US citizen, had surrendered his Chinese passport in November and was told not to leave Michigan. But he travelled to China from Detroit in January by showing another passport, the FBI said in a court filing. An arrest warrant was issued in April after he failed to appear at two court hearings in Ann Arbor, where he had been a student at the University of Michigan. He was facing charges of perjury and attempting to vote as an unauthorised elector, a felony. Only citizens can vote in federal elections, and every voter must attest to US citizenship when registering. The student was accused of lying about his citizenship when he registered to vote and then casting a ballot during an early voting period. He now faces a federal charge, though the US does not have an extradition treaty with China. Advertisement

Japan Coast Guard rescues injured crew from Chinese ship near contested waters

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's coast guard has dispatched a patrol vessel to rescue an injured crewmember of a Chinese survey ship in the contested waters in southwestern Japan, officials said Friday. The Chinese survey ship Ke Xue requested the rescue by the Japan Coast Guard on Wednesday, saying that one of the crewmembers suffered a hand injury during the survey operation in the area off the southern coast of Miyako Island, according to the JCG. The JCG patrol vessel picked up the crewmember, a Chinese national in his 40s, from the survey ship and transported him to Naha on the main Okinawa island for hospital treatment. The Ke Xue is one of a number of Chinese survey vessels that operate in waters in the East China Sea, where China has increasingly stepped up maritime activity and routinely sends survey vessels, coast guard ships, as well as warships and aircraft, often violating Japanese territorial waters and airspace. Japanese officials said that on Monday, another Chinese survey ship lowered a wire into the sea known as the Japanese exclusive economic zone — an area where Japan claims rights to conduct economic activity — east of Japan's southernmost island of Okinotorishima, without permission from the Japanese government. The JCG patrol aircraft warned the survey ship to move out of the waters, and the Japanese government lodged a protest to the Chinese side.

Gqeberha hit by terrifying spate of kidnappings

In the last three weeks, a terrifying string of kidnappings has gripped Gqeberha, with at least five abductions reported. These incidents have shaken the residents of Gqeberha and raised serious concerns about public safety in the city. On 24 March 2025, just after 08:00, at least three male suspects kidnapped a 45-year-old teacher outside her school in Algoa Park shortly after she arrived in her grey Toyota Fortuner, according to a SAPS media statement. The suspects, using a white Toyota Corolla, forcefully took her into their vehicle and fled the scene again. Two weeks later, on 8 April, a 38-year-old Chinese National victim was kidnapped. According to SAPS, the businessman was travelling on the M19 on route to his business in Kariega, after he returned from the fresh produce market at around 5:39. A white Toyota Quantum minibus that was parked across the road fired shots at the vehicle. The victim, driving a white Toyota Fortuner, came to a stop. Three unknown suspects approached the vehicle and took the victim out of the vehicle and forced him into the minibus, and drove off. On the same day, 8 April, SAPS Mount Road responded to a kidnapping in Sydenham around 12:45. A 21-year-old man had been taken. The victim later returned home with visible injuries to his face. On 10 April, four masked and armed men stormed a church in Motherwell, held congregants at gunpoint, and kidnapped the 45-year-old pastor. The suspects fled the scene in the vehicle of the pastor. Police recovered the silver Toyota Fortuner a short while later in Motherwell Police later found the pastor, an American citizen, at a safe house in KwaMagxaki. The suspects inside the vehicle allegedly attempted to flee and opened fire on the police. Officers responded, triggering a high-intensity shootout that left three unidentified suspects fatally wounded. Five suspects kidnapped a 44-year-old businessman around 10:00 today, 9 May, dragging him from his BMW outside his North End business in Darling Street. A blue VW Polo arrived and stopped behind the victim. The suspects forcibly removed the victim from his vehicle and shoved him into the VW Polo. Both vehicles then left the scene. SAPS Mount Road opened a kidnapping case and is actively investigating the incident. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
