Gqeberha hit by terrifying spate of kidnappings

In the last three weeks, a terrifying string of kidnappings has gripped Gqeberha, with at least five abductions reported. These incidents have shaken the residents of Gqeberha and raised serious concerns about public safety in the city.
On 24 March 2025, just after 08:00, at least three male suspects kidnapped a 45-year-old teacher outside her school in Algoa Park shortly after she arrived in her grey Toyota Fortuner, according to a SAPS media statement.
The suspects, using a white Toyota Corolla, forcefully took her into their vehicle and fled the scene again.
Two weeks later, on 8 April, a 38-year-old Chinese National victim was kidnapped. According to SAPS, the businessman was travelling on the M19 on route to his business in Kariega, after he returned from the fresh produce market at around 5:39.
A white Toyota Quantum minibus that was parked across the road fired shots at the vehicle. The victim, driving a white Toyota Fortuner, came to a stop.
Three unknown suspects approached the vehicle and took the victim out of the vehicle and forced him into the minibus, and drove off.
On the same day, 8 April, SAPS Mount Road responded to a kidnapping in Sydenham around 12:45. A 21-year-old man had been taken. The victim later returned home with visible injuries to his face.
On 10 April, four masked and armed men stormed a church in Motherwell, held congregants at gunpoint, and kidnapped the 45-year-old pastor. The suspects fled the scene in the vehicle of the pastor. Police recovered the silver Toyota Fortuner a short while later in Motherwell
Police later found the pastor, an American citizen, at a safe house in KwaMagxaki. The suspects inside the vehicle allegedly attempted to flee and opened fire on the police.
Officers responded, triggering a high-intensity shootout that left three unidentified suspects fatally wounded.
Five suspects kidnapped a 44-year-old businessman around 10:00 today, 9 May, dragging him from his BMW outside his North End business in Darling Street.
A blue VW Polo arrived and stopped behind the victim. The suspects forcibly removed the victim from his vehicle and shoved him into the VW Polo. Both vehicles then left the scene.
SAPS Mount Road opened a kidnapping case and is actively investigating the incident.

Lioness shot dead after fatal attack on German businessman in Namibia

A lioness known to conservationists as 'Charlie' has been euthanised by Namibian wildlife authorities after she fatally attacked a camper in the remote Hoanib River region – a decision that has sparked a wave of criticism and sadness among wildlife advocates. The lioness mauled 59-year-old Bernd Kebbel, a German-born businessman and avid supporter of lion research, after he left his rooftop tent early one morning to use the bathroom. Though other campers rushed to his aid, the attack proved fatal. Authorities confirmed that the lioness was tracked and put down shortly after the incident. A petition to save Charlie quickly gained traction, but officials said she posed an ongoing danger to people in the area and had to be euthanised to prevent further attacks. 'The loss of human life is always tragic, but so too is the killing of a wild animal that was simply following its instincts,' said one conservationist who wished to remain anonymous. 'There needs to be a bigger conversation about how we coexist with predators in their natural habitat.' The Namibian Chamber of Environment acknowledged the 'double tragedy' in a public statement. 'This is a devastating incident for both the individual and the lion. Lions in the area are under stress due to a lack of prey, which increases the chances of human-wildlife conflict.' Charlie was well known in conservation circles and had previously been tracked and studied as part of regional lion monitoring efforts. Her killing has reignited debate about whether humans should be camping in high-risk wilderness zones without adequate safety measures. Wildlife officials defended the move, saying that once a lion has attacked a human, it cannot be allowed to remain in areas frequented by tourists and locals. But some environmentalists argue that human activity – not lion behaviour – is at the root of such incidents. 'This lioness paid the ultimate price for our encroachment into their territory,' said a spokesperson from a local conservation NGO. Calls are now growing for better education around safe camping practices in predator zones and stricter rules on wild camping in sensitive areas. Meanwhile, the death of Charlie the lioness has become a rallying cry for those demanding more humane approaches to managing wildlife conflict.
