Firefighters battle fast-moving brush fire in Chino Hills

Firefighters rushed to contain a rapidly spreading brush fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon in southwestern San Bernardino County. The Euclid Fire was first spotted around 1:45 p.m. along Highway 71 in Chino Hills. As of 4:30 p.m., it had burned approximately 150 acres on both sides of the highway, a Cal Fire spokesperson told KTLA 5 News. Sky5's Gil Leyvas reported that the blaze was burning through dry brush on the west side of the highway and also thicker vegetation in the area of Prado Regional Park and Chino Creek, just north of the Santa Ana River bed. Smoke was visible from across Jurupa Valley and the Inland Empire. Several fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters were assisting ground crews in building containment lines and dousing the fire with water. Officials closed Highway 71 in both directions at Euclid Avenue. There were no reports of homes threatened or evacuations. The cause of the fire was under investigation. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Brush fire in Chino Hills forces 71 Freeway closure

Both sides of the 71 Freeway were closed on Wednesday afternoon in Chino Hills as crews battled a brush fire. The blaze was reported before 2:20 p.m. The California Highway Patrol said all lanes of the 71 Freeway were closed at the Euclid Avenue onramp in Chino Hills. According to Caltrans, the closure caused a traffic backup to the 91 Freeway in Corona on the northbound lanes, and to Pine Avenue on the southbound lanes. The CHP urged travelers to avoid the area. It's not yet clear when the freeway will reopen. No additional details, including acreage, were immediately made available.

CIF golf season ends for locals; Liberty's Weaver cards 73

The CIF State Southern California Regional boys golf tournament on Thursday proved to be the end of the 2025 season for all local golfers. Playing at the par-74 Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills, the competition was fierce for the locals who were participating. Advertisement Stockdale, which finished second at the May 19 CIF Central Section Tournament to advance as a full six-man team, was eighth in the team standings at 21-over par. Only the top three teams advance to the June 3 CIF State Championships at Poppy Hills, which is at Pebble Beach. Whittier La Serna was the team winner at 8-under par. San Diego's Torrey Pines was second at 5-under-par and Santa Margarita was 3-under to finish third. The competition for one of nine individual qualifying spots from a non-qualifying team was very difficult. The individual winner was Brady McHenry of Ventura Buena, who shot a 7-under-par 67. He won the competition on a four-hole playoff over La Serna's Hill Wang. "It was a very tough day for us," first-year Stockdale coach Dheer Patel said. "The field was filled with Division I commits and the competition was not easy at all." Advertisement Among the local individuals, Liberty High's Ty Weaver carded a 1-under-par 73, which was three shots off the score for the final state qualifying spot. Patriots teammate Stanley Cohen was next with an even-par 74. Garces' Carson Sorci shot a 3-over-par 77. Stockdale's golfers, who were eligible to qualify for the state tournament as an individual, had a tough day overall. Manik Anand was the Mustangs' low individual with a 1-over-par 75. Camilo Del Rosario was next at 76. Carrick Hentges shot 77. Jacob Roldan, who had a 64 to lead all golfers at the Central Section tournament, had an 81 on Thursday. Andrew Starr was the Mustangs' No. 5 golfer at 82. "We started the season talking about our goals as a team," Patel said. "We wanted to win league, win valley (they were runner-up) and to never quit on our shots. I'm really proud of the players."
