This 2016 Chloë Grace Moretz Sci-Fi Flop Is A Streaming Hit On Netflix

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Netflix's Top 10 charts have a knack for pulling off surprises — and sometimes those surprises aren't necessarily winners. Case in point: "The 5th Wave," a 2016 sci-fi movie starring Chloë Grace Moretz that just popped into the streamer's Top 10 in the U.S. (as of this writing, it's currently sitting at #9). Based on the YA novel by Rick Yancey, the story features an alien invasion, humanity on the brink, and a teenager trying to survive. The thing is, this movie wasn't exactly a beloved hit in its day. Critics ripped it to shreds, audiences weren't much kinder, and it pretty much disappeared without a trace as soon as it left theaters. Yet here it is, almost a decade later, getting a fresh wave of attention. That's because Netflix, as we've seen time and time again, can turn long-forgotten titles into overnight streaming "hits," thanks to a mix of star power, curiosity, and the platform's high-profile Top 10 rankings — which, as I've pointed out across too many posts to count (like this one), essentially reward recency as much as actual quality. Read more: 14 Apple TV+ Shows That Are As Good As Or Better Than Anything On Netflix Netflix Resurrects Another Box Office Bomb For some perspective, "The 5th Wave" came out back in 2016, the same year that gave us blockbusters like "Rogue One" and "Deadpool." Meaning, it's understandable if a movie like "The 5th Wave" slipped under your radar the first time around. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is currently sitting at a pretty brutal 17% critics score, with audiences rating it 38% based on more than 25,000 reviews, and that rare alignment between critics and viewers tells you just about everything you need to know. Not that it matters to Netflix's almighty algorithm. The streamer's Top 10 lists thrive on the here-and-now. A title gets added into the mix, viewers maybe spot a familiar actor's face in the thumbnail, and curiosity does the rest. Sometimes, that rediscovery turns into genuine enthusiasm. One thing that a title's re-entry into the Netflix Top 10 doesn't tell you is just how many people tried it out and ended up frustrated with their decision. In this case, it's probably a mix of both. Moretz still has name recognition, the alien invasion hook is an easy sell, and the movie hasn't been front-and-center in years. Whether viewers make it to the closing credits without regret is another story. But if nothing else, "The 5th Wave" proves Netflix will dust off just about anything — the good, the bad, and everything in between. Read the original article on BGR.

Underrated Horror Movie of the Month: THE EYE

Hello, horror lovers! Welcome to another edition of Underrated Horror Movie of the Month. If you are new to the column, here is a brief explanation. Every month, on the second and fourth Fridays, I talk about horror movies I think are underrated and underloved. The films can be from any subgenre and originate from anywhere worldwide. In this edition, I dive into the 2008 supernatural film, The Eye . Stick around to find out why I think this movie deserves more love. About The Eye Sydney Wells (Jessica Alba) lost her sight in a terrible accident at only five years old. Since then, she has learned to 'see' the world through her other senses. However, to regain her vision, Sydney agrees to a cornea transplant. After the surgery, everything takes a weird turn when Sydney begins to see strange and terrifying visions. With help from her doctor, she sets out to track down the person who donated her new eyes. Can Sydney get to the root of what is happening to her before tragedy strikes? RELATED: Underrated Horror Movie of the Month: Kingdom of the Spiders The Eye stars Jessica Alba, Alessandro Nivola, Parker Posey, Chloë Grace Moretz, Rade Šerbedžija, Fernanda Romero and Rachel Ticotin. Yuet-Jan Hui and Oxide Chun Pang wrote the screenplay for the 2002 film Jian Gui (The Eye) from Hong Kong, on which this movie is based. Sebastian Gutierrez wrote the film's script. David Moreau and Xavier Palud directed it. This film has a 22 percent Tomatometer rating and a 43 percent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fun Fact: This is an American remake of a Hong Kong horror titled Jian Gui. My Thoughts Because The Eye is a remake, it is impossible for anyone who has seen both versions not to compare them. Sadly, I have not seen Jian Gui due to its lack of availability. While I would love to watch the source material, not seeing it means I went into this movie without preconceived notions. RELATED: Horror With a Side of Cheese: Saturday The 14th As always, I took a stroll through online reviews to discuss viewers' main concerns with the film. One of the biggest complaints came from comparing it to its predecessor. This type of issue is something that happens with every horror remake. The way I see it, there is no way for any remake to live up to the original; however, that does not mean it is not a good movie in its own right. Another frequently repeated issue is calling The Eye boring and uneventful. I have a lot of thoughts on this one. This movie is not a blood-and-guts type, and it is not the 'jump scare around every corner' type. It is, however, a subtle kind of horror. The suspense builds because the things she sees are not typical ghosts, and she never knows if the person, place or situation is substantial or a spirit. Her dreams immerse Sydney in deadly circumstances that are not her own experiences, yet she feels them nonetheless. Imagine choking on smoke from a fire that happened to someone else. Consider walking down the street and passing a frightened young woman only to look over and see she is the now-deceased victim of a car accident. RELATED: Movie Review: Wolf Manor Moving on from the review comments, I want to talk about Jessica Alba. Her performance in this movie is stunning. She nails the character nuances and provides an incredible experience. Along the same line of thinking comes my one complaint: Doctor Paul. He was supposed to be Sydney's love interest, but there was no chemistry between the two. Of course, this was likely compounded by the horrible tropes heaped upon the character. He thought Sydney was crazy, didn't believe her until it was almost too late and made her feel poorly about herself. He came across as a total ass. Finally, the effects. The Shadowman appeared wispy and almost smoke-like. The fire crackled and whipped and devoured anything in its path. I am, overall, quite pleased with the effects. Final Thoughts While The Eye may not be on the same level as its source material, it is a creepy supernatural story I highly recommend. It is available to stream on HBO Max and The Roku Channel for anyone interested in giving it a chance. Also, let me know which movie you think I should feature next. Until next time, enjoy the trailer for The Eye below. Stay spooky and watch more horror movies! M3GAN 2.0 Spoiler Review

Sophie Turner Is Regal and Sassy in a Micro Set at Louis Vuitton's Cruise Show

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Sophie Turner may not be in Cannes with some of her Hollywood peers, but she too is having a very French spring. On Thursday, the actor jetted off to Avignon, a charming city in the South of France, for Louis Vuitton's Cruise 2026 show at Palais Des Papes. The Joan star exuded both regal elegance and an undeniable cool girl factor in a deep navy Louis Vuitton set with a bold gemstone print. The top was a slick zip-up jacket with structured shoulders and an hourglass, peplum-like silhouette. The bottoms, meanwhile, were tailored micro shorts. Both pieces were covered in the same print, which featured rows of yellow, blue, and clear gems, plus little ornaments of the Louis Vuitton logo. Turner styled the set with the fashion house's funky, chunky white Berlin pumps with black accents. She also carried a little gray-and-black leather handbag and coordinated her glossy, navy manicure with her fit. Others in the front row at the Parisian brand's show included Emma Stone, Chloe Grace Moretz, Cate Blanchett, and Jaden Smith. Turner has been in the South of France filming a newly-released short film with St-Germain. In the clip, she is seen getting ready for a date, which for her involved ordering pre-made food and preparing some fresh, crisp Hugo Spritzes. Last year, the actor spoke to Harper's Bazaar about her summer plans, and jokingly compared herself to a Hugo Spritz. 'What do a spritz and I have in common? Well, we're both pretty flirty,' she said. 'We're bubbly, sweet. I think refreshing—I hope I'm refreshing—and not too overpowering.' Here here. 'Kick-Ass' 15th Anniversary 4K UHD Blu-Ray SteelBook Review - A Twisted Take On The Superhero Genre

Not all superheroes wear capes — some don a customized wet suit and dub themselves Kick-Ass! Based on a beloved comic series, this 15th anniversary release of the twisted, high octane action-adventure from director Matthew Vaughn (the Kingsman films) follows a comic book-obsessed teen (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who reinvents himself as a crime-fighting hero, with one glaring problem: he has no training or actual superpowers. In a near-death confrontation with a ruthless drug dealer, Kick-Ass is rescued by a pair of costumed, highly skilled vigilantes — Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his daughter, Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz). When they all join forces along with another rookie avenger called Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), a brutal mobster and object of Big Daddy's vengeance pushes their alliance and skills to the brink. For previous thoughts on Kick-Ass , please see our 4K UHD review of the film here. Video Quality The 15th anniversary 4K UHD Blu-Ray of Kick-Ass from the Lionsgate Limited line comes in its original 2.40:1 in 2160p with Dolby Vision. The film was first released on 4K UHD Blu-Ray in 2017, a release which was repurposed in 2020 for the Best Buy exclusive SteelBook. This new 4K UHD Blu-Ray is not the exact same disc that was released previously thanks to new special features and a new encode, but the general viewing experience is not a notable difference from what came before. The fact that this does not come with an accompanying Blu-Ray may also be a drawback for some viewers. Unfortunately, there are still elements that make this one of the weaker titles on the format. The most notable improvement from the old Blu-Ray is in its vivid, heightened color palette which makes the film seem even more like a surreal dream. There are significant gains in visual pop and saturation that make the bold colors leap off the screen even more. Where the film falters more so are the pushed black levels that give the film an oily sheen in darker elements that are not appreciated. The argument that this could be a benefit to the fantastic ambiance of the film is valid, but it just looks a bit strange in the end. Any improvements in the compression on this 15th anniversary do not change this in a major way. The highlights in the film are more defined with whites more pure and balanced with no instances of blooming to be found. Skin tones experience a tiny bit of DNR at times which gives a waxy appearance that robs some of the detail. The transfer reveals an increase in the depth of field in the varied locations that we visit around the city. In the wake of the various scenes of destruction, you can more clearly make out textures within the production design, not to mention the textures of the costumes. The grain in the film can be a bit problematic with some instances of unnatural swarming in a few instances. This coupled with some unsightly print damage in a few shots feels like a problem that should not be on the table for such a recent release. There are definite benefits to this 4K upgrade, but it is not the homerun some fans may have hoped for in the end, and those with the previous 4K UHD Blu-Ray will not be treated to a notable upgrade. Audio Quality This disc comes equipped with a dynamite Dolby Atmos presentation that will give your system a workout. This has always been a title that sounded practically perfect, but the addition of the height channels makes this one supremely immersive. Sounds are appropriately rendered with precise directionality from the more kinetic action scenes to interpersonal moments of dialogue. The overhead channels are especially welcome during some of the fight scenes in a way that makes it feel more immersive. Ambient details are plentiful and quite satisfying in the rear and overhead channels. The score envelopes the room in a really pleasing manner that transports you into this world. Dialogue is presented perfectly clear without ever being overwhelmed by any of the competing sonic elements. The gunfire and forceful hits provide an all-encompassing soundscape that kicks in throughout all the speakers. The low end is very active in a way that may have your neighbors complaining. The mix will more than satisfy fans of the film. Optional English, English SDH, and Spanish subtitles are provided. Special Features Lionsgate has provided Kick-Ass with an optional sleek new SteelBook that is truly lovely in person. The case comes with a removable clear slipcase with some additional artistic elements. The front artwork is a nicely animated depiction of Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Big Daddy, and the rear features a similar depiction of Frank D'Amico and Red Mist. The interior sports a comic book-style depiction of Kick-Ass with his jetpack flying through the city. Photos of the Steelbook can be found at the end of this review. Audio Commentary: Director Mathew Vaughn provides a decent commentary track recorded at the time of the film's premiere in which he lays out the development of the film and takes you scene by scene detailing some of the different elements that had to come together during production to create this film. A bit dry at times, but overall entertaining. Pure Cinematic Fun: A new 20-minute interview with director Matthew Vaughn in which he reflects on the creation of the movie and its legacy. Still Kicking Ass: A new 20-minute piece in which the stunt team for the movie discusses pulling off the action in the film. The Work Of Art: A new 13-minute featurette with comic creator Mike Millar in which he discusses the creation and inspiration for the original comic. Physical Media Kicks Ass: A nearly two-minute new excerpt from the Matthew Vaughn interview in which he discusses the importance of physical media on his young life. A New Kind of Superhero – The Making of Kick-Ass: An extensive four-part documentary clocking in at an impressive 1 hour and 53 minutes which details the creation of the film from the initial development of the source material through production and release. There are a vast array of interviews with the cast and crew that delve into the shooting of the stunts, the rendering of the special effects, the scoring of the film and much more. It is difficult to imagine any questions you have about the film would not be covered in this deep dive. It's On! The Comic Book Origin of Kick-Ass: A 21-minute piece that takes a closer look at the source material with a specific focus on the story and artwork as detailed by the creative team. Theatrical Trailer: A two-and-a-half-minute trailer for the film is provided here. Redband Hit Girl Trailer: The minute-long NSFW trailer focusing on Hit Girl is provided here. Final Thoughts Kick-Ass was a breath of fresh air when it debuted a decade and a half ago, and in most ways it still holds up as a supremely fun addition to the superhero genre. While some of the attempts at humor are a bit dated, there is still much to laugh and plenty of hard-hitting action to thrill you. The performances are pretty fantastic all around, and it is wild to see where some of these performers have ended up in the intervening years. Lionsgate Home Entertainment has released the 4K UHD Blu-Ray in a stunning SteelBook package that collectors will love. The disc itself struggles a bit in the video department, but the audio presentation is top notch and the new and archival special features are very in depth. If you are a fan of the film, this is a solid release overall. Recommended Kick-Ass is currently available to purchase on 4K UHD Blu-Ray in Limited Edition 15th Anniversary Steelbook Packaging through Lionsgate Limited.
