Netizens divided over man who pays delivery riders to go home to their families on National Day
A man who gave out money to food delivery riders so they could go home to their families on National Day has divided netizens.
A 97-second video of the man was shared on Reddit by myliferabaksia with the heading, "Salute brother, very nice gesture".
"Hi guys, since today is National Day, what I am going to do is, I'm going to give money to Grab riders so they can go home and spend time with their loved ones," says the man.
He then asks five riders why they are working on a public holiday, how much they need to make, and offers to pay them so they can stop work.
"Why like that ah? First time seh, not scam ah?" asks one rider.
"Serious, ah?" says another.
He offers one rider $100, while a later shot of his phone shows that he offers another female rider $80. He then tells them he has transferred the money and tells them to complete their last delivery before going home to rest.
"I know some of the comments are going to say, why must record and post on social media, you want to show off," he says at the end of the clip. "The purpose of this video is not to act nice or to show off, whatsoever. The purpose of this video is to remind you guys to spend time with your loved ones.
"I know we all must work and find money but there's one thing that money can't buy - which is time. And the thing is, you only have one family, so spend as much time with them, OK?"
Some netizens skeptical, others praise man
"Hope the giving is genuine and done on video to inspire others to be generous. Intention is key and only he knows," said Redditor Massive_Constant9074
Several commenters felt it was humiliating to the riders.
"I have mixed feelings about this… On one hand it's a nice gesture, on the other, it does feel a bit humiliating and like a grab (pun) for likes," said Extreme-Quantity2454.
Others wanted to believe he meant well.
"Find me one of the persons that was humiliated by his gesture, then I will agree. Otherwise, why do you always have to look at the worst?" said ChocCooki3.
Ukfi said: "For those who say this is humiliating, have you ever tried to do grab delivery? I own a car and i do the occasional hitch. The way ppl treat grab drivers are just so so bad. Can't imagine doing grab food.
"This guy is offering cold hard cash. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement between two consenting adults. Both get to benefit and nobody got hurt. This is way better than a lot of other things on the internet."
But there was humour, too, amid the serious comments.
"Thanks to this guy all my deliveries on National Day were late," said DownRangeDistillery.
